In T'Challa's absence, however, Shuri and one of her royal companions decided to spy on the American warship positioned near Wakanda since the Superhuman Civil War. They were captured upon discovering Erik Killmonger being smuggled into Niganda as a destabilizing influence for Wakanda. Killmonger quickly rallied support among the demoralized Nigandans since the collapse of M'Buku's reign, and began appearing in public, daring T'Challa to strike at him. The Black Panther contacted Iron Man, and Stark admitted he didn't know about or approve of this plan by the State Department. He offered the services of Monica Rambeau as a gesture of good will towards rescuing the princess, but Killmonger was prepared and managed to capture Monica as well.

Queen Ororo proved unreachable due to X-Men business, forcing Black Panther to act alone with the Wakandan military. He used a confiscated drilling machine from Mole Man to get the drop on Killmonger by approaching from a subterranean route. Zuri led the Panther Guard in releasing Shuri and Monica while T'Challa confronted Killmonger directly in the streets. They prepared once again to engage in single combat, with no intervention from the Dora Milaje, their armies or others. As before, however, the match proved inconclusive once a furious Monica Rambeau escaped and struck down Killmonger herself in revenge. [Black Panther (4th series) #35-38]

All this led to a surprising revelation as Wakandan doctors asked Brother Voodoo to examine Shuri and her companion. Voodoo had operated in Wakanda ever since sensing the Cannibal back at T'Challa and Ororo's wedding. He revealed Cannibal had been hiding inside Shuri's friend, but he also revealed that he wasn't Brother Voodoo at all, but a Skrull infiltrator in disguise. The Voodoo-Skrull and Cannibal killed each other and inadvertently revealed themselves to the Wakandans in the process. Wakanda now knew they had been infiltrated by aliens.

In communion with the Panther God, T'Challa was able to locate all the Skrulls in Wakanda, for their souls were not Wakandan. A dragnet eliminated nearly all the Skrulls and their heads were left on pikes on the outskirts of the city. Two Skrulls close to T'Challa and Ororo were deliberately missed as part of a larger game at play. When the Skrull invasion inevitably began, Wakanda was prepared. T'Challa and W'Kabi engaged in long-range tactical warfare with the forces of General K'vvvr. Each side successfully broke down the other's firewalls and defenses so that by the time the Skrulls reached the walls of Wakanda, both armies were reduced to melee weapons and hand-to-hand combat.

T'Challa and Ororo took to the field with their armies and battled against K'vvvr's Super-Skrulls and other soldiers. They were seemingly caught unawares by the betrayal of the two Skrulls left in their midst, and captured. The king and queen knew who their enemies were, however, and planned ahead. They turned the tables on their captors when left alone, using Wakandan technology to force the Skrulls to assume their forms and take their places in K'vvvr's torture chamber. Posing as Skrulls themselves, T'Challa and Ororo had free run of K'vvvr's warship before their ruse was uncovered. The King and Queen of Wakanda dispatched K'vvvr together and sent his warship back into space, filled with bodies of the dead and a warning for all who thought to invade Wakanda. [Black Panther (4th series) #39-41]

Wakanda had stood for 10,000 years against any attack from without, but it would prove vulnerable to an attack from within. T'Challa learned of the rise of a group called Desturi, cultural traditionalists who believed the royal family was abandoning those traditions with their foreign queen and open trade with the outside world. The Black Panther could identify the movement, but not its followers. And worse, he detected the presence of some unseen force operating behind the scenes, supporting the Desturi to the ruin of Wakanda. Soon that force revealed itself, and its name was Doom.

After a private summit with Prince Namor of Atlantis, Black Panther and his Dora Milaje were openly attacked by Doctor Doom. T'Challa was severely wounded by Doom's power and his two bodyguards were killed getting him on the Quinjet with auto-pilot taking him back to Wakanda. T'Challa crashed into Birnin Zana and was pulled from the wreckage, barely alive and kept on life support. Wakanda was in crisis and, in keeping with royal protocol, S'Yan declared the ascension rites must be prepared for a new Black Panther. Queen Ororo decreed Princess Shuri should prepare to face the Panther God, over the concerns of Queen Mother Ramonda.

Meanwhile, the cult of the Lion God saw an opportunity to remove the hated Panther Tribe from the throne of Wakanda. They summoned the totem-killer Morlun to prey on the fallen Black Panther. This supernatural energy vampire strolled through the Jabari lands and killed M'Baku on his way towards Birnin Zana. Ramonda turned towards the outlawed alchemy of Zawavari to revive her son. The witch-doctor presented Ororo with the chance to travel between the realms of life and death and retrieve T'Challa from where he straddled the two planes. However, the price was that Ororo would give herself over to death instead.

Morlun breached Central Wakanda and killed hundreds on his path towards T'Challa, including W'Kabi and Zuri as the last line of defense. Shuri ended her communion with the Panther God and donned the vestments of the Black Panther. She lured Morlun to Zawavari's hut, where preparations had been made. Morlun was cast into the realm of Death, prepared as a new vessel for Zawavari's original spell. Death turned to feed on Morlun, allowing Ororo and T'Challa to return safely to the realm of the living. T'Challa lived, but the mantle of the Black Panther had truly been passed to Shuri. She now served as tribal leader and princess regent of Wakanda while T'Challa struggled to fully recover from his injuries at Doom's hands. [Black Panther (5th series) #1-6]

Knowing Doom's involvement made T'Challa more concerned than ever about the Desturi movement. His meeting with Namor had been highly classified even among the royal court, making him question the security of his palace. T'Challa ran tests and discovered the existence of nano-swarms which had spread and bonded themselves to the palace staff, royal council, even Ororo, turning them all unwittingly into living cameras. Only T'Challa and Shuri were uninfected, apparently a precaution by Doom in case the enhanced senses of the Black Panther detected a change in their bodies that others could not. T'Challa felt cut off from Ororo and his advisors and claimed amnesia about the nature of his injuries to stall for time and make plans against Doom. He was forced to move in secret without his support network being involved.

T'Challa made preparations in secret for another attack by Doom. He met with Mother Aneka of the Dora Milaje reserves, commanding her to train the warrior women in a new fighting style designed to defeat the analytical learning robots Doom would employ. T'Challa's convalescence continued, but his recovery was stymied by the fact that there could be only one Black Panther. The blessings and enhancements of the Panther God had gone to Shuri, leaving T'Challa as an impressive but still human physical specimen with no enhanced recuperative abilities. With time of the essence, T'Challa met with Zawavari to circumvent the weeks needed for his recuperation. Through a series of alchemical rites and spells, Zawavari temporarily restored T'Challa's full health and peak fitness, while also binding enchantments to his body to protect him from direct assault by magical forces.
