BIOGRAPHY - page 17

In the meantime, T'Challa maintained an air of distance and indifference to royal affairs, something Doom and the Desturi were eager to exploit. Wakandan crops were targeted by an unnatural blight, and the failure of the royal family and even Queen Ororo to save the crops was used as political leverage against them. The Desturi staged a confrontation at the farm lands, which tricked Storm into seeing an attacker. She struck an unarmed man with lightning thinking, he had a weapon. Meanwhile, Shuri (in secret collusion with T'Challa) was spending most of her time overseas, building international relations as a new ruler and "hunting" for T'Challa's mysterious attacker. Shuri allowed herself to be led around by the nose by Doom, following a trail of breadcrumbs designed to pin blame for T'Challa's attack on Namor, while appearing to be an absentee ruler back home. All of this was being orchestrated by T'Challa and Shuri to appear to be vulnerable in an effort to force the unidentified Desturi sympathizers and any other enemies out into the open. Much was sacrificed for this gambit, including the arrest of Queen Ororo for assault (and being a witch) when the Desturi did rise up and seize power as they planned. [Black Panther (5th series) #7-12]

When the Desturi coup in Wakanda was done, T'Challa and Shuri finally prepared to act. They contacted the X-Men to gather allies for rescuing Storm and the royal family being held hostage by the Desturi dissident government and their "honored leader," T'Kan. He was just a puppet and fool, however, masking Doom's attempts to access the royal vault and abscond with 10,000 tons of Wakanda's processed Vibranium. Doom forced Ororo to use her lock-picking skills to break through the various levels of security at the vault, and killed S'Yan when she at first refused to cooperate.

The Panthers, Dora Milaje army and X-Men gathered at Wakanda's border. T'Challa and Shuri broadcast to the people of Wakanda that the Desturi had one chance to surrender, and would even be given a voice in the tribal council. T'Kan, appearing by hologram from the royal palace, laughed at the idea and reminded the royals that Wakanda had never been conquered. In turn, T'Challa reminded him that by tribal law and royal decree, T'Kan was not Wakanda. They were. And with that, Nightcrawler teleported them into the palace and Shuri snapped T'Kan's neck.

The rest of the Desturi council soon followed, and the Desturi military on the border began to crumble without proper leadership. As the X-Men and Dora Milaje pressed their way into the country, Shuri and T'Challa fought to retake the royal palace. T'Challa made his way down to the vault and found Doom with a blaster pointed at the head of his gagged queen. Doctor Doom gave T'Challa a choice: give him the means of opening the final lock on the vault, or his queen would die. Doom offered him five seconds, but T'Challa refused to open the lock and prepared for Ororo's death. Instead, Doom laughed and teleported away, revealing he had already entered the vault and stolen the Vibranium before T'Challa arrived. [Doomwar #1-2]

Besides the loss to Wakanda, the threat of Doom having the Vibranium came from a state secret T'Challa revealed to the Fantastic Four and other allies he rallied after the aborted coup. Vibranium had a hidden quality for amplifying mystical energies which Wakanda had never managed to master, but which T'Challa believed Doom had. Rushing to catch up, T'Challa pushed the development of a field called shadow physics, his own blend of quantum science and ancient alchemy. T'Challa, Shuri and their comrades used shadow physics to construct Vibranium trackers to locate and assault Doom's facilities around the globe in an effort to find him and stop his preparations for the metal. T'Challa recruited the likes of Deadpool, War Machine and a new special ops group of Dora Milaje called the Midnight Angels. However, Doom's ally Walter Declun, the Broker, organized a number of enhanced super-villains and Vibranium-augmented adaptable Doombots to protect Doom's infrastructure. It was a war of attrition as T'Challa lost allies to death or injury in repeated, growingly difficult engagements, while Doom stalled for time until he unlocked the secret of mystical Vibranium.

With a heavy loss of life, Wakanda's forces destroyed Doom's factories and bases around the globe. They only recovered a percentage of the missing Vibranium, however, and Doom had time to complete his work in Latveria with the mother lode. Using magic to access the quantum realm, Doom was able to connect himself to all the Vibranium on Earth, even trace particles scattered over the globe when the Vibranium meteor first fell to the planet eons ago. He had nigh-infinite, self-perpetuating power, quantum awareness of events throughout the world, and the ability to control and animate any minute mass of Vibranium anywhere. International law still prevented the forces of Wakanda from entering Latveria without making it an act of war. T'Challa rallied his people on the Symkaria - Latveria border and appealed to Doom's ego, calling him out for a confrontation.

The fighting was intense, but the end result was never in any doubt. Doom alone was simply too powerful, and his Doombots and other trooper units drew power from him. As they fought hand-to-hand, Doom mocked T'Challa for his failures with Vibranium. Wakanda had had the metal for millennia and never achieved with it what Doom had done. Their dependency on the metal combined with their weakness in not exploiting it had led Doom to victory. T'Challa agreed, except for the victory part. Unwilling to leave the Vibranium and the world in Doom's hands, T'Challa had crafted a response using shadow physics. An alchemical reconfiguration of Vibranium would render it inert, removing its exotic properties and making it just an ordinary metal. To reach all the Vibranium on Earth, however, he needed a form of transmitter, which Doom had helpfully provided in his mystical Vibranium armor. T'Challa triggered the signal relay he had affixed to Doom's armor during their fight, destroying all the processed Vibranium in the world and, with it, Doom's newfound power. [Doomwar #3-6]

Doom was defeated, but it was a pyrrhic victory.  Without Vibranium, Wakanda's economy was on the verge of collapse, and was in desperate need of damage control. As princess regent and Black Panther, Shuri was responsible for addressing the crisis, but T'Challa was at loose ends. Although his health and physical fitness remained, T'Challa soon lost the extra abilities provided by Zawavari's magic. He no longer had a connection to the Panther God, and his physical prowess was peak human at best, but no more. While his country healed, T'Challa sought the means to rebuild his faith in himself and his abilities.
