She-Hulk still crossed paths with her cousin Bruce and his gamma-irradiated world from time-to-time. Bruce had become an intelligent version of the Hulk again, but his personality was more crass and egotistical as the “Professor Hulk.” After a conflict between Hulk and Captain America, Jen helped smooth things over with the Avengers so they would attend Rick Jones’ wedding. She also planned the bride Marlo Chandler’s bachelorette party. [Incredible Hulk (2nd series) #411-412,417-418]

John Byrne left She-Hulk’s title, and she entertained several replacement writers. She and her editor Renee finally settled on an intriguing set-up where a robot named War Zone attacked Jennifer for mysterious reasons and blasted her in the face with an unknown vapor. [Sensational She-Hulk #50] During a rematch bout with Titania, She-Hulk found herself getting progressively weaker. She consulted with Reed Richards and they discovered War Zone’s gas had contained a gamma-based toxin eating away at her powers whenever she used them. Reed suggested Zapper Ridge as a consult. She-Hulk’s old boyfriend had become a famous hematologist and his father-in-law Hector DeVasquez was a premier gamma specialist, making him ideal to treat the toxins in her blood.

Zapper was eager to help when Jen and Weezi reached the west coast, although his wife Christina was cool towards Jennifer’s arrival. Everyone cautioned She-Hulk to take it easy until the toxin was dealt with, but a criminal named the Rumbler accosted Sheriff Walters when Jennifer was dining with her father. She fought the seismic biker, only to end up buried alive. In her weakened state, She-Hulk appeared dead, and Weezi called Wyatt out to Hollywood to mourn her. Zapper believed he could resuscitate She-Hulk from the dead using traditional defibrillation shocks combined with gamma rays to stimulate her back to activity. He succeeded and managed to cure her of the gamma toxin at the same time.

Zapper’s exuberance at Jennifer’s recovery got the better of him, and he kissed his former flame. Jen quickly deterred him, as Zapper was a married man and she was with Wyatt. Zapper’s gamma charge also had extended side effects, which She-Hulk discovered when she caught the Rumbler attacking her father’s hospital bed. The sensational She-Hulk found herself changing into a larger, stronger, savage She-Hulk when angered. Jennifer struggled to maintain control of herself and her emotions in this new state. Zapper gave her further evaluations to discover why his treatment was causing these effects, and he made a second pass at Jennifer. She-Hulk was in no mood to forgive a second time and stormed out. Naturally enough, Christina saw these displays of affection from behind the scenes and mistook Jen’s intentions.

Somehow, Jen let herself be talked into a live guest appearance on “Heartbreak Hospital” while the soap was filming in Los Angeles. Jen’s own soap opera of a life interrupted taping when War Zone somehow reactivated and struck again. Christina arrived on the set as well as accused Jennifer of stealing her husband, just before Zapper also sprung into action and deactivated War Zone using a gamma neutralizer that shut down his system. An enraged She-Hulk transformed into her savage state again, furious over the evidence before her eyes. Zapper’s unrequited affection for her, his expertise in the very toxin that was used against her, his sudden arrival to “save” her from War Zone… all of it pointed towards Zapper being behind all her recent woes in a desperate ploy to win her back.

She-Hulk was ready to go ballistic when the Hulk arrived to calm her down. Bruce had seen the news reports of Jennifer’s death, and now found himself in the ironic position of deterring a Hulk-style rampage. It was Hulk vs. She-Hulk until Hector DeVasquez stepped in with his Gamma Tank and revealed himself as the true mastermind. Doctor DeVasquez had been furious when his daughter married Zapper Ridge and gave in to his fantasies, even getting plastic surgery to look more like She-Hulk. He tried to eliminate She-Hulk with War Zone and the toxin to keep Zapper faithful, but that only ended up driving her to Zapper anyway. DeVasquez was also responsible for her current savage state after tampering with the gamma resuscitator. The combination of rage and gamma radiation from the tank pushed She-Hulk’s strength beyond anything she had achieved before, and finally her body expelled all the gamma radiation it held, reverting her back to human. Bruce gave Jen another blood transfusion to restore her to a stable and sensational She-Hulk, DeVasquez went to prison, and Zapper and Christina decided to work on their marriage. While the Death and Life of She-Hulk was certainly as major a comic event as the Distinguished Competition’s “Death of…” event, it failed to sustain Jen’s title for much longer. Jennifer rejected the idea of a kid sidekick named the Gopher, lost some prestige at the D.A.’s office and even beating up a courtroom full of super-villains suing the Tinkerer didn’t raise her spirits (or sales). When Wyatt broke the news that he needed to move back to Arizona to fulfill his responsibilities as Keewazi chieftain, She-Hulk realized her time was up. She wrapped up a few subplots (including finding Garth the zombie in her closet ever since Byrne forgot to use him as her butler) and went out with a bang fighting the Scarlet Beetle, the absolutely lamest of Z-list villains her title was originally designed to showcase. And with that, the curtain dropped on She-Hulk’s solo series. [Sensational She-Hulk #58-60]

She-Hulk’s fellow Avenger Thunderstrike had come to an understanding with Absorbing Man through past encounters. As a result, Creel reached out to Thunderstrike because of an issue with his girlfriend, Titania. The two super-villains were trying to go straight, but Titania was on the verge of breaking her parole because of her obsession with beating She-Hulk. Thunderstrike approached She-Hulk on their behalf, arranging a final fight away from any civilians to prove who was the strongest once and for all. Thunderstrike’s ally Stellaris crashed the fight, provoking Absorbing Man and Titania into thinking they had been set up. Titania eagerly lay into She-Hulk, having added sonic field enhancers to her gloves in order to cheat even before Stellaris arrived. Still, Jen tricked Titania into embedding her enhanced fist in a rock wall, leaving her wide open for a right cross that finished her off, yet again. [Thunderstrike (1st series) #16] Because of their rotten history, She-Hulk thought the worst of Titania when she spotted her entering city hall and found a massive gathering of super-villains waiting for her. Jen and the Avengers feared a terrorist attack, but it was actually the wedding of Creel and Titania. When they learned the occasion, the Avengers departed with embarrassment. Jennifer and Wyatt remained close despite the distance between them and their individual responsibilities. When the Human Torch was visiting the Keewazi, She-Hulk came out west to spend time with Wyatt and Johnny. [Fantastic Four (1st series) #394-395] She returned to New York with Wyatt to oversee the reading of Reed Richards’ will. [Fantastic Four Unplugged #2] While walking together in Manhattan, Jen and Wyatt passed a homeless man and she gave him some change. This man had actually been the alchemist Diablo in disguise, and he used his elemental familiar during this encounter to secretly forge a link into She-Hulk’s mind. He sent her on an errand to retrieve some Wundagore clay, but the newly-formed Fantastic Force intervened and shook Jennifer back to her senses. The Force initially thought the evidence pointed towards the Puppet Master and failed to uncover Diablo’s involvement. [Fantastic Force (1st series) #12-13]

She-Hulk joined Fantastic Force after that, in part to assist them in her capacity as an attorney. Vibraxas of the Force has recently used lethal force defending himself from an attack by a gang member in a street fight. Jennifer successfully had him cleared of all charges in New York court because he acted in self-defense. Vibraxas was one of Black Panther’s citizens, however, and the tribal law of Wakanda required their own hearing on their countryman’s actions. After a crash course on Wakanda jurisprudence, Jennifer also acted as Vibraxas’ pro-advocate in Wakanda. He was cleared, but independent actions taken by Vibraxas and Fantastic Force while they were in the country led to Vibraxas being excommunicated from Wakanda, and the Black Panther ended his monetary backing of the team. She-Hulk offered her spacious apartment to help house the team after T’Challa revoked their previous headquarters at the Wakandan Embassy. However, Diablo had only made a pretense of restoring She-Hulk’s will. He still retained a link to her mind which he could exploit as he wished. Diablo’s alchemical immortality came from a deal with Mephisto, of which he wished to escape the consequences. Knowing Franklin Richards had once dealt a serious blow to the Hell-Lord, Diablo enchanted She-Hulk into joining the Force to get close to the Psi-Lord. When the time came, Diablo mentally compelled She-Hulk to light the Candle of Conjuration in her home, ensnaring Fantastic Force in its smoke. The candle’s vapors unsettled the minds of the heroes individually, and She-Hulk succumbed to her paranoia about always being watched from beyond the fourth wall. Under his illusions, Diablo hoped to guide Psi-Lord into overthrowing Mephisto for him. Franklin overcame Diablo’s influence, however, and both She-Hulk and the Force were freed from his clutches.
