Because of the attention needed setting up her own law practice and her solo adventures, She-Hulk was unable to devote herself to the Avengers full-time. She missed out on a number of missions, despite being part of the core roster. When the Avengers formally reorganized under their United Nations charter, She-Hulk was nominated to active membership with the main roster. Jennifer was involved in the conflict with the Tetrarchs of Entropy, the Russian nuclear survivor Surge and the rise of the Deviants in the Subterranean Wars. However, she was unable to maintain this commitment and stepped down to join the reserve substitute roster instead in a matter of weeks. [Avengers (1st series) #325-333]

She-Hulk had been having romantic fantasies about Hercules for weeks, building upon their unrequited sexual tension from living together at Avengers Mansion. Meanwhile, Brent Wilcox had been persistently asking Jennifer out since the Encroachiverse crisis, despite her friendly efforts to put him off. Her suitors collided as She-Hulk helped Thor and Hercules deal with an invasion of devils from Muspelheim, and Brent arrived to show off his knowledge of trans-dimensional physics. The reality of Hercules’ ego and Brent’s insecurities was a bucket of cold water on Jen’s libido. She-Hulk clobbered Herc after he slapped her behind and, when Brent was pulled into the closing dimensional portal, Jen and Weezi vowed to go fetch him. Y’know… eventually.

Jennifer’s practice had some setbacks when she allowed a crook named Bono to tamper with evidence in her custody, leading to her client being convicted for Bono’s crimes. Helping Death’s Head secure data files that allowed a D.A. from several decades in the future to convict Bono in her time was little comfort. This loss still stung when she was negotiating a plea bargain for a criminal named Woziah, who refused to play ball because of her reputation. She-Hulk fought Killer Shrike, Grey Gargoyle and Dragon Man to protect Woziah from efforts to silence him, but he was seemingly killed. In fact, Jen never learned Woziah and a galactic hunter named Surge had set her up for a subplot that never emerged.

In an amusing adventure, She-Hulk was spellbound to sign away her soul to Mephisto for a licensing agreement based on her image. Her soul was only forfeit if sales from her image topped $1 Billion in a year. After shaking off the initial enchantment, Jennifer tried to find ways to break the contract, but Mephisto countered her at every turn. Eventually, though, she had the Human Torch bring forth his copy of the Naked Truth, proving Jen had retroactively violated the morals clause of Mephisto’s contract for her image, thereby making the agreement void. In a final bit of antics, She-Hulk was targeted by the forgotten Golden Age villain Isbisa, who wanted to be restored to notoriety in her book just like the Blonde Phantom. His efforts to break the fourth wall and summon guest-stars from space and time proved ineffective, and he fled back into comic book limbo. [Sensational She-Hulk #24-30]

She-Hulk’s series got back on track when John Byrne settled his differences with editorial and was put back on the title as writer/artist. Which isn’t to say Byrne’s ego was easily mollified. He made a point of having Jennifer wake up “as if from a dream” in his first new issue, implying everything that happened while he was gone hadn’t occurred. Over the next several issues he established Jen and Louise still worked for D.A. Tower, that Louise’s children were grown and older than Jennifer (implicitly jettisoning the Phantom Blonde character from continuity), and even called out the She-Hulk: Ceremony graphic novel as bad continuity to ignore it as well. His editor, Renee Witterstaetter, had to stop Byrne from declaring his return “Sensational She-Hulk #9” instead of #31 as his final word on what he thought of everything that happened since. [Sensational She-Hulk #31]

[Note: Why is the above not in a gray text block like we usually do when talking about continuity and behind-the-scenes matters? Because it all happened on-panel in Byrne’s issues since Jennifer was a self-aware comic book character. She-Hulk complaining about her continuity was an in-universe event! So why is THIS text book a gray note? Because our writers are so disoriented on how to present this, even we’re confused!]

Jennifer and Weezi took a vacation to Florida in Jen’s flying car when they were diverted by radio reports about a plane crash caused by a moving mountain. They met with geology Bob Robertson, who told them the tale of Spragg, the Living Hill. The alien entity possessing the ground nearby was disrupted by Robertson’s counter-harmonic technology, but it opened up a massive sinkhole and She-Hulk fell into it. Jennifer ended up in the realm of the Mole Man, whose Subterranea was being threatened by Spragg as well. The paranoid Mole Man initially held Jennifer hostage over a pit of supernatural liquid diamonds which had already transformed one of his subjects. Once he learned they shared a common enemy, though, Mole Man agreed to help She-Hulk defeat Spragg, for a price.

Mole Man used a mantle plume to launch Spragg back into space where he came. In exchange for his aid, Mole Man demanded Jennifer become his bride. Caught by her promise, She-Hulk prepared for the wedding. Louise and Bob Robertson had followed after Spragg, and Jen noticed Weezi was missing when the ceremony began. Demanding to know where her friend was, She-Hulk learned Mole Man now had Weezi dangling over the vat of liquid diamond, as insurance in case She-Hulk betrayed him. As She-Hulk and Mole Man fought, he tumbled into the magical diamond juice, taking Weezi with him. As it turned out, the magic of the liquid diamond only released the innermost self of the person immersed in it. Mole Man was reduced to a true mole while Weezi regained her youthful figure from her Blonde Phantom days, de-aging to around forty years old. [Sensational She-Hulk #31-33]

Jennifer and Weezi were called back from their vacation by D.A. Tower, who wanted She-Hulk to handle the case of a man killed by a zombie. Investigating the zombie led them to New Orleans, where the houngan Black Talon was gathering select super-powered zombies. He rose several mutants as the X-Humed before She-Hulk was able to stop him. In the process, Jen gained a new butler as the Talon’s mute henchman Garth developed a crush on her. [Sensational She-Hulk #34-35]

She-Hulk took Louise and flew out to Los Angeles for the Christmas season to visit her dad. On the way, Jen stopped by the Keewazi lands and visited Wyatt Wingfoot. Seeing Wyatt again renewed old feelings between them, and he promised to visit her in New York soon. Jennifer and Morris Walters were on good terms again, and sparks immediately flew between Louise and Mo. For company, Richard Rory and Zapper also came to Christmas at the Walters’. Doctor Zapper Ridge had moved on from his feelings towards She-Hulk (sort of) upon marrying his statuesque new bride Christina DeVasquez. The holidays were without incident, but Jen overheard Morris telling Louise how much he missed the old Jennifer. As proud as he was of She-Hulk, Morris still thought fondly of the original version of the woman he raised. With inspiration from Weezi, Jen pulled out the Christmas present given to her by Nick St. Christopher and was transformed back into her human form for the holiday. Morris and Jennifer spent some quality time together before the wish reversed itself. [Sensational She-Hulk #36]

She-Hulk’s status as a reserve substitute for the Avengers led her to be called forth when the team intervened on the Kree-Shi’ar War and the incidental damage it was causing to Earth’s sun. While two envoys were sent to the different stellar empires, though, Jen remained behind with an Earth force to safeguard the planet. Her biggest hurdle during Galactic Storm was dealing with U.S. Agent’s ego. [Operation: Galactic Storm crossover] Her reunion with Wyatt in New York went off nearly flawlessly. An alien called the Living Eraser tried to kidnap She-Hulk as a test subject (and paramour) for his king, but in the end he only barely interrupted date night. Similarly, Mahkizmo the nuclear menace struck on Valentine’s Day and whisked She-Hulk to his alternate future kingdom of Machus. Wyatt and the Thing followed after them before yet another villain could try and make Jennifer their queen. She-Hulk stopped the misogynistic Mahkizmo from detonating a “gender bomb” in the past to wipe out the hated women of his time by, well… explaining to poor Mahkizmo where babies come from. [Sensational She-Hulk #37-39]

Sales were dropping on She-Hulk’s comic, though, and so John Byrne delivered an opening sequence of her jumping rope naked (no image reference here – go find a back issues bin, you perv, and support your local comic shop). Once the story got going, Jennifer took her flying car to pick up Louise from the airport as she returned from her extended vacation with Morris in California. Jen was surprised to see Louise had become significantly heavier in the last few weeks, despite the effect of the magic liquid diamonds. Weezi was in the middle of explaining she had always had a weight problem when She-Hulk’s flying car suddenly steered for outer space. Al the Alien had triggered the recall transponder in the car as a way of getting She-Hulk’s help against the malevolence of Spragg, the Living Hill. Spragg had become a menace to Al and U.S. Archer since returning to space, having spread his consciousness to the meteors in the area to create a horde of “stone clones.”

She-Hulk was ready to defend the Star Stop of innocent truckers from Spragg, but Weezi suddenly opted out. She took offense to Byrne just “deciding” she had a weight problem and decided to go on strike. Jennifer supported Weezi’s decision and continued on alone, battling Spragg and his stone clones by using oxygen pills to fight freely in outer space. Eventually, She-Hulk and Archer devised a magnetized net that contained Spragg and blocked his mental signals animating the other rocks. Xemnu the Titan also saw fit to return and menace She-Hulk in space, but Weezi returned to deliver the coup de grace and strike him down from behind. Louise had finished negotiating with Byrne behind the scenes, and they stabilized her weight at something both could agree with. [Sensational She-Hulk #40-43]

Before Spragg struck, Razorback and Taryn O’Connell had been captured by the D’Bari people out in the Coal Sack Nebula, so Jen and Weezi chose to pitch in on their rescue mission. They found a Skrull armada approaching the D’Bari colony, intent on destroying it. The Skrull captain agreed to let She-Hulk try to rescue her friends first, so she teleported down to the surface and got herself captured. Jen was imprisoned next to Buford and Taryn, as well as an alien from the race known as the Ovoids. The Ovoids were famous for teaching Doctor Doom their natural talent for transplanting their mind into the body of another being, effectively swapping consciousnesses.

When She-Hulk found it more difficult to escape the jail’s defense barriers than she expected, she and the Ovoid came up with a plan to teach her how to project her mind and contact the Skrull armada in orbit. The mental training worked, but the gamma radiation in her system was an unknown element to the Ovoidand disrupted the process. Instead of temporarily swapping bodies with Weezi as she intended, Jennifer instead swapped shapes with her friend – Louise suddenly possessed the height, strength and figure of She-Hulk, while Jennifer adopted Weezi’s Byrne-negotiated proportions and normal strength. Weezi and the Skrulls still realized something was wrong after this and came to the rescue, and the D’Bari were actually revealed to be Xartan Carbon Copy Men. Everyone was saved who needed saving, but the Ovoid reported he could not reverse the body-swapping process, leaving Jennifer and Louise as they were now. (And yeah, Rocket Raccoon showed up too, but this was 1992 so barely anybody noticed.) [Sensational She-Hulk #44-46]

Back on Earth, Reed Richards performed pan-molecular bio-scans on Jennifer and Weezi to determine what could be done. Awkwardly, he discovered a psychological element was preventing the body-swap from naturally reversing itself. It seemed Louise actually preferred the power of the She-Hulk and, even unconsciously, was holding onto that shape for herself. Reed suggested a form of emotional shock might weaken Louise’s mental block, but at the risk of her sanity if performed improperly. Jennifer and Wyatt were discussing their dilemma at lunch when Titania attacked, having heard She-Hulk was now more vulnerable than ever. Titania took her time, enjoying her petty revenge on She-Hulk. Meanwhile, though, Morris Walters had flown in from Los Angeles and confessed to Louise that he loved her better as she was before. This relaxed Louise’s mental block enough that the change reverted, and Jennifer regained her strength in time to give Titania a thrashing. [Sensational She-Hulk #48-49]

One day, She-Hulk was summoned to Bellevue Hospital by a call that Weezi had been seriously injured. She arrived to find a doctor dead and the police blaming her for the murder. Security footage showed a woman matching Jennifer’s description killing a Doctor Stopplemoor. Jen went on the run and convinced Nosferata of her innocence when the She-bat confronted her. While investigating the mystery, She-Hulk encountered Adrenazon, her doppelganger who was trying to frame her. Adrian Lynn’s husband was a drunk driver who killed a married couple in a crash that also left her crippled. Jennifer Walters was the prosecutor who put Michael away, and he killed himself in prison. Adrian transferred her grief into rage, blaming She-Hulk for the entire incident. While working with Dr. Stopplemoor on an adrenal formula to restore her mobility, Adriane overdosed on the formula and began a revenge plot against Jennifer. She murdered Dr. Stopplemoor to cover her tracks and frame She-Hulk.

Adrenazon fought with She-Hulk and got the drop on her, leaving an unconscious Jen to be arrested for Adrian’s crimes. Nosferata’s research on the adrenal formula confirmed it was an unstable mixture, however, and Adrenazon began experiencing psychosis. She became convinced she actually was She-Hulk and went to Jennifer’s apartment to begin living her life. She-Hulk escaped custody with Nosferata’s help. She located Adrenazon and fought with her, as Adrian altered between hating She-Hulk and defending her own identity AS She-Hulk. Adrenazon commandeered a bulldozer to run Jennifer down but recreating the circumstances of Michael’s crash broke her mania and she realized what she was doing. When the police arrived and tried to shoot the “escaped criminal” She-Hulk, Adrenazon threw herself in harm’s way to protect Jennifer. Adrian went into custody and Jennifer’s name was cleared. Jen stood by Adrian as the formula was flushed from her system and helped the regretful woman come to terms with her husband’s death. [Marvel Comics Presents (1st series) #123-126]
