As Jen prepared to live a life more suited to She-Hulk, she started looking for a new car to match. In exchange for an ostentatious pink Cadillac, She-Hulk agreed to perform in a commercial for a used car lot called Wacky Willie’s Wheels-and-Deals. Willie tried to back out of their verbal contract when the commercial was over, only to quickly recognize what a very, very bad idea that was. She-Hulk got her Cadillac and picked up a surprising hitchhiker: Benjamin J. Grimm, the Thing. She got involved with helping the Thing protect Diablo Reactor from a saboteur named Negator. She-Hulk was also romantically super-assertive with Grimm, despite his repeated protestations that he was not a free operator. [Marvel Two-In-One #88]
A few weeks later, events were put in motion to bring She-Hulk from the west to the east coast. Janet van Dyne, chairwoman of the Avengers as the Wasp, was interested in expanding the team’s roster and reached out to all the active female super-heroes she knew. She arranged for newspaper ads and TV spots to get She-Hulk’s attention and soon thereafter Jen flew out to Cresskill, New Jersey for Jan’s party. After a fight with the Mechano-Marauder, She-Hulk agreed to join the founding members Wasp, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man on the new roster, along with a returning member, Hawkeye. She-Hulk and Hawkeye got off on the wrong foot after his electronic arrow disabled her pink Cadillac when she cut off his cab on the way to the mansion. Jen shut down his jibes early with an exaggerated kiss that left the archer stunned. Jen and Jan got along famously, and the Wasp was eager to flex her talents as a fashion designer to dress and style the savage She-Hulk, making her sensational. She-Hulk proved herself early to the team against threats like the Fomor and the Masters of Evil. In her downtime, however, Jen was struggling to adjust to New York life. The Maria Stark Foundation arranged a weekly stipend for active Avengers who needed it, and she lived rent free at Avengers Mansion, but the She-Hulk had to fight the boredom that sunk in as the mansion’s sole full-time resident when she wasn’t on active duty. As She-Hulk settled into her life as an Avenger, exciting changes also occurred in the life of her cousin. Bruce Banner finally gained control over the Hulk, able to change forms at will and retain his intelligence just as Jen did. After saving the White House from an alien invasion, the Hulk received a full Presidential pardon for all past actions. [Incredible Hulk (2nd series) #278-279] When his old enemy, the Leader, began testing the new Hulk’s capabilities, Bruce consulted with the Avengers and had his first heart-to-heart with Jen since she became the She-Hulk. Used to seeing the Hulk as a curse and a monster, Bruce initially tried apologizing to Jen for her changes. She-Hulk rejected his apologies, though, and made it clear to Bruce how much she loved her new life and the chance to become a force for good. Hulk and She-Hulk fought side-by-side with the Avengers against the Leader, stopping his plan to travel back in time and seed early humanity with gamma mutations. Prior to Jen joining the team, the Wasp’s ex-husband and founding Avenger called Yellowjacket was arrested on charges of treason. He claimed his old nemesis Egghead set him up, but no one could find evidence Egghead was even alive, much less responsible. During Pym’s trial, the Masters of Evil attacked on Egghead’s orders, claiming to be “rescuing” Pym to further tarnish his name. As the Masters kidnapped the defendant, She-Hulk confronted a villain called Radioactive Man. He blasted her with gamma radiation and forcibly reverted She-Hulk back into Jen Walters for the first time in months. Jen was shocked to be this vulnerable again, as her fellow Avengers met the petite attorney in her natural state. After initially trying and failing to become She-Hulk again, Jen became too scared to try any further. It was Hawkeye who stepped up and counseled Jennifer with tough love, using his natural obnoxiousness to provoke her. Jen soon became so angry with Hawkeye she forgot her reservations and walloped him as she transformed back into She-Hulk. Hawkeye and She-Hulk quickly made peace, and Jen came to appreciate the veteran Avenger as a friend, despite his occasional irksome behavior. [Avengers (1st series) #228-229]
She-Hulk remained a dedicated member of the Avengers through several minor revisions to the roster. Reservists Vision and Scarlet Witch were called upon to deal with a threat from the Negative Zone, and Vision was injured during the mission. As he lay comatose in the mansion recovering, his wife Wanda rejoined the team to be nearby. She-Hulk’s forceful manner initially rubbed the Scarlet Witch the wrong way (as She-Hulk tried to physically remove her from her husband’s bedside to make sure she was eating properly), but Wanda and Jennifer soon became easy friends. Another new recruit was the charming Eros, the Eternal of Titan called Starfox, who joined the team looking for adventure. She-Hulk and Starfox shared a vivacious attitude towards life, and they slept together early in Starfox’s tenure as She-hulk helped show him around Earth. The Avengers faced numerous and varied threats during these weeks, including the Wizard, Lava Men, and Morgan le Fay. [Avengers (1st series) #230-241]
She-Hulk and the Avengers were drawn to Central Park by readings of an enormous energy source. They entered a mysterious construct and were teleported to the far side of the universe. [Avengers (1st series) #242] The Avengers materialized in deep space alongside Spider-Man, Hulk and members of the Fantastic Four and X-Men. They witnessed an entire galaxy being destroyed and replaced by a single star and planet, dubbed Battleworld. An enigmatic entity that claimed to be “from beyond” bade the heroes and a parallel group of villains to slay each other in order to achieve their greatest desires. The Beyonder deposited them onto Battleworld and left the heroes and villains to carry out this Secret War.
She-Hulk handled herself well when the villains staged their first sneak attack on the heroes’ position. She faced the Asgardian goddess Enchantress and finally found an opponent she could batter with her full strength. Enchantress and several prisoners were taken as the heroes secured a base of operations. Despite the different factions involved, and Wasp being current chairwoman of the Avengers, all present chose to defer to Captain America as their overall leader. At least, at first. Magneto had been sorted with the heroes by the Beyonder and, while the X-Men were willing to give him a chance, the other heroes were not. Magneto fled the heroes with the Wasp as his captive, and the X-Men soon followed to establish a third faction on Battleworld.
An attack arranged by Doctor Doom and Molecule Man destroyed the heroes’ base and recovered their prisoners. They relocated to a nearby alien village, in the shadow of Galactus. The Planet-Eater had also refused to play by the Beyonder’s rules and remained an ominous presence. She-Hulk was infuriated when the Wrecking Crew drove through their base and deposited the body of the Wasp, apparently killed by the villains after she escaped from Magneto. The Avengers desired vengeance, but Captain America cautioned them against rash action while the potential threat of Galactus still loomed. She-Hulk couldn’t see past the death of her friend, though, and she chose to make a one-woman siege on Doctor Doom’s citadel where the villains resided. Jen beat the Wrecking Crew before facing off against Titania, a new super-villain only recently empowered by Doom. Titania held her ground against She-Hulk until the Crew recovered. Joined by Doctor Octopus and Absorbing Man, the seven villains ganged up on She-Hulk and beat her senseless.
When the X-Men arrived to watch over Galactus, the Avengers were free to pursue She-Hulk and storm Doom’s citadel as well. They recovered She-Hulk’s brutalized body and Mister Fantastic placed her in a cell-regeneration machine to save her life. Mercifully, both she and Wasp were eventually restored by these miraculous devices. Matters reached a cosmic scale as Galactus tried to consume Battleworld and Doctor Doom stole the power of the Beyonder, only to lose it again. In the aftermath of the Secret War, Mister Fantastic prepared to send the combatants back to Earth. However, the Thing chose to remain behind on Battleworld. He had learned how to change back to Ben Grimm during the war and believed the planet’s unique atmosphere gave him this opportunity. To avoid leaving the FF short-handed, Ben asked She-Hulk to take his place on the team, and she accepted. [Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars #1-12]
Once the heroes returned to Earth, She-Hulk sorted out her responsibilities. The Avengers had already begun expanding their roster before she left, and so they weren’t short on power. Instead, She-Hulk and Thor were given a new “detached membership” status, leaving them on-call for emergencies only as special reservists. [Avengers (1st series) #243] Jen’s introduction to the Fantastic Four was marked by tragedy, though. Sue Richards had been nearly full-term in her second pregnancy when the Secret War began and had remained behind. She went into labor shortly after the heroes returned. Tragically, despite the best efforts of Reed, Bruce Banner, and other doctors, she soon lost her baby. [Fantastic Four (1st series) #265-269]
Despite this, She-Hulk was lovingly accepted by the team at the Baxter Building. An experienced super-hero powerhouse, she was an excellent fill-in for the Thing during his sabbatical. She-Hulk aided the team against numerous threats such as the alien invader Terminus, battling with the Warlord’s forces of Other-Earth and intervening on the Kree-Skrull War on the Blue Area of the Moon. One of her most important encounters was with Wyatt Wingfoot, Keewazi chieftain-to-be and long-time friend of theFantastic Four. An adventurer at heart, Wyatt chose not to accept the role as tribal leader so he could continue traveling with the Fantastic Four. Jen and Wyatt quickly became friends, and their relationship soon blossomed into more than that. [Fantastic Four (1st series) #268-274]
