BIOGRAPHY - part 7

Sersi and Makkari eventually rekindled their romance and moved into a loft together in San Francisco. Sersi was out one day when she felt Makkari's heart stop. She found him in one of his fugue states, dead. Sersi instinctively knew what to do as she slid her hand into Makkari's chest, where she searched through until she found something warm and Makkari came to life again. Sersi knew what was really going on – that Makkari was continuing to communicate with the Dreaming Celestial and asked him to stop. Makkari refused to do so, claiming that the Celestial only trusted him and that, in order to save the humans, Eternals and Sersi herself, he had to continue to do this. Sersi attempted to slap Makkari, but was stopped by his lightning-fast reflexes. [Eternals (4th series) #1]

A short time later, Sersi had another meeting with Tony Stark, this time following an incident with another Eternal at Golden Gate Park. Sersi suggested that the Eternals could not register as they weren't US citizens. Tony acknowledged that the Eternals deserved a certain degree of autonomy, and suggested a formal alliance. Sersi told him that the Eternals had been dealing with Celestials for eons and that the best thing he and other super beings could do was leave the Eternals alone. Before they parted, Sersi asked Tony for some information on addiction, a symptom foreign to the Eternals. Tony warned her that if she suspected someone was an addict, then she would probably be right. Sersi then confided in Thena about her concerns for Makkari, believing that, if Makkari continued to connect with the Dreaming Celestial, he would cease to exist. [Eternals (4th series) #2]

After discovering Makkari was continuing to communicate with the Dreaming Celestial, Sersi confronted the Celestial itself, attempting to attack it by transmutating the land around it into giant hands. Makkari was alerted to this attack through his connection with the Celestial, and raced to save Sersi, just as the Celestial's defenses knocked her back. Sersi explained to Makkari that she wanted the Celestial to stop hurting her – which is when the Celestial began to speak to Sersi through Makkari. It was then that she learned the Celestial would stop at nothing to protect Makkari through its own means, but that Sersi had to protect Makkari within the physical realm. The Celestial referred to enhancing Sersi's powers, but offered no further explanation and ended the communication.

However, Sersi's dramatics gained the attention of Iron Man, who confronted her with several S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. Sersi warned him that this was none of his business but, before the argument could continue, Makkari woke and returned to his own self. He assured Iron Man that this would not happen again, before speeding away with Sersi. [Eternals (4th series) #3-4]

Sersi returned to Olympia, now located in Antarctica, to recover from her ordeal. From there, she spent time at the monitor station, and discovered that transmissions into deep space were coming from inside Olympia. Zuras, all-father of the Eternals, believed Thena's son was a spy but, when he looked into the boy's eyes, the boy seemingly died. With trouble brewing, Sersi attempted to contact Makkari, unaware that he had been beaten to a pulp by Gilgamesh and then incinerated by Ajak. The other Eternal had been jealous that the Dreaming Celestial had chosen Makkari as its conduit, rather than he, who had dedicated his life to studying the Celestials. Sersi soon discovered that people all over the world had suddenly fallen asleep, somehow connected to the Dreaming Celestial, who was now glowing. Before she could investigate, Ajak contacted her and reported that he had found Makkari. Sersi rushed to the site, where she cried over Makkari's ashes.

Ajak comforted her as he told her that Gilgamesh was responsible for Makkari's death. Unfortunately, the Eternals' regeneration equipment had been destroyed so Makkari could not be reborn. Additionally, Ajak reported that he had tried to communicate with the Dreaming Celestial, but that it would not respond. Sersi used this opportunity to reach out to the Celestial herself, where it cryptically told her that Makkari had to be regenerated/activated for the information upload of the planet to occur, and to abort the song/sequence/fail-safe. Sersi became frustrated when the Celestial repeated that over and over, until she realized that her true role here was to become Makkari. So, she isolated Makkari's essence amongst trillions of others within the after-life, and drew the essence into a husk she created. Sersi then took his place in that husk and her body was transmutated into Makkari's, allowing him to be reborn and preventing the Celestial from performing destroying the Earth. [Eternals (4th series) #5-6]

Sersi's consciousness awoke in the realm known as the Vestibule, which appeared to her as a bar. She sat at the bar, drinking, and the mysterious bartender revealed to her that there were only two ways out – to be reborn through the activation chamber, which was still destroyed, or through the Lacuna. However, the mysterious bartender was actually an ancient being called the Fulcrum and, when the Dreaming Celestial appeared at the Vestibule and answered several questions, the two cosmic beings disappeared. Sersi was somehow restored to life shortly afterwards. [Eternals (4th series) #7-9]

When the world was plunged into an unending slumber by the Chaos King, only god-like beings were spared from this sleep. Hercules led the charge against the Chaos King and assembled a new God Squad to combat him. Sersi was surprised to be summoned by Hercules, who explained to her that her powers made her one of the most powerful Eternals. Additionally, the fact that she had spent more time among humans as an Avenger, fighting at his side, made her ideal to help save the Earth once again. Sersi was flattered by Hercules and agreed to help him. However, she soon found herself the object of Silver Surfer's affection, when he thought that she was his lost love, Shalla Bal, somehow returned to him. Before the new God Squad could get to the Chaos King, however, they were forced to fight dead gods. [Chaos War #2-3]

The God Squad's quest to prevent the Chaos King from destroying the Heavens took them to encounters with gods of other pantheons, and they even battled a Kraken. Sersi was on hand as Hercules took the final fight to the Chaos King himself. [Chaos War: God Squad #1, Chaos War #5]

Sersi eventually took to planning parties once again, even using her old website sersispartyplanning.com. It was at one such party she had been planning where she was approached by the Wasp, needing her help. However, Sersi explained that, unless it was to do with planning a party, she wasn't interested. Sersi tried to evade the Wasp thereafter but the Wasp confronted her, telling Sersi that she could respect the fact Sersi did not want to be an Avenger anymore, but pointed out she didn't have to be an Avenger to help when help was needed. The Wasp required Sersi's psychic abilities to trace matter that matched residue on the inside of an envelope. Sersi was hesitant at first, and even hinted at the possibility that she might not be able to get the information that was needed. Nevertheless, she came through and the Avengers were able to locate the Kree villain they were attempting to apprehend. [Avengers Assemble #17]

Sersi and the other Eternals soon discovered a terrible secret – that the Eternals were not supposed to protect humanity. Rather, the Celestials created them to cultivate human kind as a pathogen against the Horde. When Celestials began to arrive at Earth, several Avengers journeyed to Olympia, which had since been relocated to Greece. However, Sersi and the other Eternals had apparently committed suicide after going mad upon learning the knowledge of their true purpose. [Avengers (7th series) #4]

As is the nature of their race, Sersi and the other Eternals were soon resurrected. Soon after, however, the Resurrection Chamber was taken offline and Thanos murdered Zuras, king of the Eternals. Sersi and several other Eternals began working together to uncover which of their fellow Eternals must have helped Thanos. At the same time, Thanos began to murder other Eternals, none of whom could be resurrected because the Resurrection Chamber was still offline. In attempt to lure out Gilgamesh, whom Sersi and the others suspected might have been assisting Thanos, Sersi met with Tony Stark in New York. The plan worked, and Gilgamesh attacked Sersi. Ikaris arrived and transported Gilgamesh away, leaving Sersi to apologize to Tony Stark for using him as bait in her plot to lure out Gilgamesh. Sersi quickly used her telepathic powers to alter Tony's memory of their discussion, as she did not want him to know Thanos was on Earth. Tony noted that Sersi seemed sad of late, which Sersi told him was due to her spending too much time among her own people, rather than humans.

Sersi and the others soon discovered it was not Gilgamesh who was assisting Thanos, but rather Phastos, who had been “helping” them to uncover the traitor all along. Phastsos was also responsible for the destruction of the Resurrection Chamber. Sersi and the others found Thanos and fought him. It appeared they were winning, until they were transported around the world. When they regrouped, they confronted Phastos, who revealed that he destroyed the Resurrection Chamber because the Eternals don't have a true purpose anymore, not even being the only defenders of humanity and the Earth. Worse, each time they were resurrected, somewhere in the world a human died in exchange. Sersi was forced to admit that she had been aware of this for some time but had taught herself to care less. Despite this horrible truth, the Resurrection Chamber was restored and Zuras was returned to life. He told the Eternals to form a Uni-Mind to confirm him as the Prime Eternal. However, on this occasion, Sersi spoke up against Zuras and reminded the other Eternals that it's always the same – they do this and forget what has gone before – forget the humans, too.

Sersi's words must have struck a chord with other Eternals, as they were last seen entering Deviant Lemuria requesting help to change. [Eternals (5th series) #1-6]
