BIOGRAPHY - part 4
The Avengers soon became embroiled in a war on a cosmic scale like none before – between the Shi'ar Empire and the Kree Empire. Sersi and several teammates ventured into space to investigate the Starcore Station, which had reported trouble. There, Sersi and the others witnessed the formation of wormhole and, at the same time, another wormhole appeared from which an armada of Shi'ar vessels emerged. Shi'ar and the Kree had been using wormholes near Earth's sun to transport themselves through space with ease, which had started to make the sun unstable. When the Shi'ar accused them of being Kree spies, they attacked the Avengers, who defended themselves. Sersi suggested to her teammates that they kill the Shi'ar, only to be told that killing was completely against the Avengers rules. Nevertheless, once the Avengers boarded one of the Shi'ar vessels, Sersi threatened to kill the Shi'ar Praetor.
Upon returning to Earth, tensions mounted between Sersi and Captain America during a meeting where the Avengers were joined by the West Coast team and several reserve members. Captain America expressed his disappointment with Sersi's actions in space, to which a furious Sersi responded by suggesting to Captain America that maybe Avengers should kill. Although the argument had no clear outcome, the assembled teams did agree on a strategy. The Avengers were split into three teams: one team to travel to the Kree Empire, a second to the Shi'ar Empire and a third to remain on Earth, with the intention of stopping the two alien races from going to war and possibly destroying Earth's sun. Sersi found herself on Captain America's team, bound for the Kree Empire, and she sarcastically told him that she hoped her actions would not cause him any more embarrassment.
Sersi, Captain America and the rest of their squad arrived on the other side of the stargate on the fringes of the Kree Empire but at the doorstep of a giant space station. The Avengers boarded the Kree station, only to discover that it had been overtaken by Shi'ar commandos. The Avengers battled the Shi'ar, only to then find themselves surrounded by Kree troops, sent to retake the station. Taken prisoner, the Avengers were taken to the Kree homeworld of Hala. As they were paraded through the streets as prisoners, Sersi noticed Captain America signaling to her and quickly used her powers to transform the captured Avengers into Kree Accusers. Then speaking Kree, surprising even Cap, Sersi told the Kree that the Avengers teleported away and brought them here in their place. When they and the other Accusers were directed to find the “missing” Avengers, the Earth heroes instead searched a secure location where they could speak. For Iron Man, it was his top priority for his armor to be returned to its original condition. With Cap's permission, Sersi changed Iron Man back and assured him that her powers would not have harmed his armor. As Iron Man departed to fly reconnaissance, Sersi made herself, Cap, Crystal, Hercules and the Black Knight appear as Kree civilians so they could make their way through the streets of Hala without being recognized. Indeed, Iron Man’s actions managed to bear fruit more quickly, as he located the Kree central command and told his teammates he would give them an hour to get to him.
By now, the situation had become dire, with a Nega-Bomb being transported to the Kree Empire from the Shi'ar Empire. Attempts to stop this only resulted in the bomb affecting Earth's sun, resulting in the Earth-based Avengers reluctantly allowing its transit to Kree space. Sersi and the Avengers watched in horror as the Nega-Bomb was detonated within the Kree Empire, laying waste to civilizations, worlds and entire populations. Though she and her group of Avengers were in the path of the bomb, Sersi was fortunately able to use her powers to change their bodies into inert matter, so they were not harmed by the Nega-Bomb’s blast or radiation. Even more fortunately, they were discovered by another group of Avengers and revived by fellow Eternal Starfox. The Avengers all traveled down to Hala, where they discovered a scarce number of survivors, and learned that the Supreme Intelligence had orchestrated this genocide in an effort to evolve his people into a race that would make the universe tremble. Deciding that they must make sure nothing like this happened again, a small group of Avengers set out to kill the Supreme Intelligence. Sersi was among this group, having previously made her view on killing very clear. She tried to make Captain America see her view, but he wouldn't. Sersi and the others then killed the Supreme Intelligence. Or so they thought. [Operation: Galactic Storm crossover]
The Avengers changed following the events on Hala, including Captain America departing the team. Sersi stood by her decision that the Avengers were justified in killing the Supreme Intelligence and, while meditating one evening over the rooftop of Avengers Mansion after being absent for two weeks, she found a troubled Dane Whitman, her teammate the Black Knight, struggling with his participation in the slaying of the Supreme Intelligence. Sersi noted his melancholic state and, when he voiced his intention to leave the Avengers, she attempted to talk him out of it. Sersi then grabbed Dane and kissed him, suggesting that he let go of the past and enjoy the present. Their romantic interlude, however, was interrupted by the arrival of the Starjammers. A misunderstanding soon led to Dane being seriously injured by Raza Longknife. Sersi showed some concern for Dane, warning Raza that he was lucky she did not kill him for what he had done. Donning a new costume, Sersi was visited by her fellow Eternal, Sprite, who was sent by the other Eternals to check on Sersi's well-being following the Uni-Mind merge that she had with Thane Ector. Sersi was not interested in talking to Sprite, especially when he reminded her about old legends. He urged Sersi to return to Olympia to visit the Eternals, but she told him she had responsibilities as an Avenger and flew away. Sersi was late for a meeting in which her teammates were discussing a mysterious threat that had access to their computer systems. She walked in after the meeting to discover Crystal talking to Dane. Instantly jealous, Sersi wasted no time when Crystal departed by heavily flirting with him. Despite him telling her that they were too different and that this thing between them wouldn't work, Sersi nevertheless kissed him deeply and was not pushed away.
Soon thereafter, the Avengers discovered they were correct about a mysterious threat looming. A group called the Gatherers, composed of Avengers from several realities, each the last surviving member of their respective team, transported into the Mansion. A battle followed but the Avengers were overwhelmed and defeated, leaving the Gatherers to obtain the information they wanted – the location of this world's Black Panther. In order to survive on the worlds they visited, the Gatherers had to gather the essence of that world's version of themselves… and kill them. So that the Gatherers' Coal Tiger could live, he had to kill this world's Black Panther. Sersi and several of the Avengers journeyed to Wakanda, but things did not go to plan for the Gatherers, as the Coal Tiger realized he couldn't take the Black Panther's life. Additionally, the Gatherers' Swordsman remained behind with the Avengers. As this world's version of himself was long dead, he was unable to “gather” his essence. The Avengers believed they now had at least some leverage with the mysterious looming threat. [Avengers (1st series) #355-356]
Around this time, Sersi began to experience odd mood swings, some of which resulted in her acting as if she were a completely different person. On one occasion, acting as if she were not herself, Sersi had a romantic encounter in SoHo with a man who seemed not to know her true identity. When she noted that she had to leave, the man voiced that he wanted her to stay with him for longer. She agreed, but implied that there could be repercussions.
Fashionably late as always, Sersi arrived that night at a dinner party for the Avengers. Making a beeline straight for the Black Knight, she flaunted herself in front of him and Crystal. During the dinner, Dane told Sersi that he didn't appreciate her antics in front of Crystal, so Sersi offered to apologize to Crystal later. Dane also told Sersi that he thought something was wrong with her, but she assured him nothing was. The dinner was interrupted by the arrival of a Watcher, who warned the Avengers to beware of the danger ahead. Meanwhile, the man who Sersi was with earlier in the night, was discovered by two detectives – dead – the sixth victim to be found like this in a matter of weeks. [Avengers (1st series) #357]
When the Avengers were accidentally drawn into an internal conflict in the extradimensional world of Polemachus, Sersi was among the Avengers inadvertently teleported to that realm. They soon learned that the energy rings circling their world had begun to malfunction and provide more heat than the otherwise sunless planet required. This in turn at caused a contingent of priests, led by a man named Askar, to convince their populace that the only way to fix the rings was to appease the gods with a sacrifice – a young girl named Astra. Fortunately, the Avengers were able to convince Askar to let them investigate the failing energy rings, though they were given only 24 hours. Before the deadline, the Black Knight came up with a plan that would use the might of Arkon (ruler of that realm), Sersi's cosmic power and Crystal's elemental abilities to siphon off excess energy and free Polemachus from the intense heat that was proving deadly for the world. During the operation, Crystal began to fall into a rift within the rings but Sersi, despite knowing her teammate was also her rival for the affections of the Black Knight, rescued her. The rift was closed, and the skies over Polemachus no longer burned. However, upon returning to the citadel on Polemachus, joy turned to shock when Anskar shoved a dagger in Astra’s back, killing her. Proudly, he claimed that the gods still demanded a sacrifice and would not be happy their rings were meddled with. An enraged Sersi then burned Anskar to death with energy beams from her eyes, while her shocked teammates looked on. When asked if she knew what she did, Sersi declared that she did – that she was an Avenger. [Avengers (1st series) #358-359]
