BIOGRAPHY - part 5

Continuing her pattern of running from the Avengers following critical moments in her life, Sersi fled to Wakanda, where she reflected on her actions on Polemachus and attempted to wash away the guilt she felt at killing Anskar. The Black Knight found her and told her that her disappearing acts were no longer cute. Sersi claimed that she needed to be alone and admitted to Dane that, when she saw Astra dead and Anskar reveling in his crime, she killed him – and that she felt such a thrill when she did it, almost as if she needed to do it. Worse, Sersi also confided to Dane that she thought she was going insane. Sersi accompanied Dane back to Avengers Mansion but, en route, she started to feel strange and urged Dane to get out of the Quinjet, which soon crashed into Avengers Mansion. Glowing with energy and screaming as she emerged from the rubble, Sersi demanded to know why this was happening to her. She lashed out at her teammates, telling them to get out, as she didn't want them to see her like this. She delighted in blasting Crystal, who was trying to subdue her with her elemental powers, but no one could seem to reach Sersi, not even the Black Knight. Sersi was only stopped when the Vision (actually an imposter planted by the Gatherers), cryptically told Sersi that he had a message from an old friend – that she had been a naughty girl. He then phased his hand into Sersi's head and knocked her out. [Avengers (1st series) #360]

Sersi had recovered from her ordeal when several of her fellow Eternals arrived to help her through her situation. It was then that Sersi informed her family that the Black Knight was her Gann Josin – an honor rarely given to humans. The Black Knight was surprised to learn that this was an intimate version of the Uni-Mind, a mental bond between two people that made them lifelong soulmates. Sersi didn't see Dane when he was told this, nor his turning to look at Crystal. Sersi expected what would come next, as Ikaris told her that the Eternals feared that the Mahd W'yry had claimed her – a maddening, or senility. The Eternals noted that Sersi had always been the most eccentric of their people but that even her recent actions were beyond that. Nevertheless, Sersi rejected Ikaris' claims because, if what he said was true, it meant that the rite of cleansing was called for – elimination of the mad one from the Eternals by molecular discorporation – death. The Avengers, including Crystal, leapt to Sersi's defense and, when Sersi was asked to return to Olympia, she rejected the offer and the Avengers stood at her side. Ikaris wanted to fight, but Sprite talked him down and suggested they make the Black Knight officially become Sersi's Gann Josin. Sersi agreed and so Ikaris made it so, bathing the Black Knight in ancient energy. Before the Eternals departed, they warned the Avengers and Sersi that they would be watching. When Dane regained consciousness from the bonding process, he was not happy and told Sersi she had no right to do this, as he had no choice in the matter. Later, Sersi watched out of her bedroom window as the Black Knight and Crystal met on the grounds below and kissed. [Avengers (1st series) #361]

Sersi was visited by Hank Pym, who was checking on an injured associate of the Avengers, but soon realized that he had actually come to determine if she was insane. Hank tried to reassure Sersi that the Avengers were just concerned about her. Before the examination could take place, however, two detectives arrived at Avengers Mansion, investigating several apparent murders that had taken place recently. Although she invited them in, they soon disappeared. Soon thereafter, they were transmuted into stone and cast to the bottom of the East River. [Avengers (1st series) #363]

Still on her own, Sersi started to have nightmares – nightmares about her kissing strange men, which resulted in the men being killed by a shadowy figure. Concentrating harder on her dreams, she discovered the shadowy figure had been killing the men. Although she didn't know it at the time, his name was Proctor, and her teammates had just met him on a recent mission. [Avengers (1st series) #364]

When a group of rebel Kree survivors came to Earth seeking revenge on the Avengers, blaming them for destroying the Kree Empire, Sersi wanted to accompany her teammates on the mission. After the Black Knight suggested that she instead ought to stay and continue her tests with Hank Pym, Sersi lashed out, accusing him of wanting to spend time with Crystal. However, the Black Knight was able to calm Sersi down, urging her to feel his thoughts through their Gann Josin connection. Calm once again, Sersi now understood without a doubt the danger of her recent mood swings.

Later, when Dane and the group of Avengers he was with were captured by the Kree rebels, Sersi felt this through her connection to him. She became quite distraught, knowing that Dane was in grave danger. While the other Avengers debated their course of action, Sersi, who knew where the Kree rebels were thanks to her connection with Dane, angrily flew away from the team, intending to find Dane and stop the Kree herself. She arrived at an atoll in the Pacific Ocean, where she made light work of a Kree sentry robot. She was soon joined by the rest of the Avengers, and together they broke into the facility where the Kree were keeping Dane and the others prisoner. The Kree, however, teleported away, leaving the Avengers to face a Nega-Bomb which they had planted on the island. In an attempt to prove she was still useful to the Avengers, Sersi used her power to change the explosive power of the bomb by changing the composition of its ions. With assistance from the Black Knight, who kept her stable through their connection, Sersi was able to achieve this awesome feat. Although the island was destroyed from the resulting explosion, the Avengers were able to get to safety and had saved the world once again. [Avengers (1st series) #365-366]

Sersi's personal problems were put to one side for a desperate rescue mission which forced the Avengers to violate their United Nations Charter by entering the war-torn nation of Genosha without permission. Fabian Cortez, a former member of Magneto's Acolytes, had kidnapped Crystal's daughter Luna – the granddaughter of Magneto – and taken her to the island nation. The Avengers worked alongside the X-Men to rescue Luna and defeat Cortez. However, adding to their problems was the fanatical Exodus, who claimed to be the true heir of Magneto. His powers were vast, but Sersi was able to keep him occupied in battle for a time. The mission was successful, at least in terms of rescuing Luna. [Bloodties crossover]

Sersi later took part in the historic meeting between the Avengers and Avengers West Coast in which a vote was put forward to disband the West Coast branch. Sersi ultimately voted against the West Coast team being disbanded, though mostly it was because she didn't want its members being folded into her team and “cluttering up the Mansion.” [Avengers West Coast #102]

When the Avengers received a priority alert from the South Pacific, the exact location was established to be Lemuria, the home of the Deviants, the enemies of Sersi's people. Sersi accompanied the team to Lemuria but, upon arrival, found themselves quickly taken captive by Karygmax and his Deviant horde, who implanted the Avengers with brain mines that put them into a trance. When the Young God called Varua, another thrall of Karygmax, began to draw blood from each of the Avengers' hands, Sersi’s self-preservation kicked in and broke her free of the brain mine. She managed to escape Lemuria and immediately fled to the Pentagon, seeking assistance from the Deviant Kro. Kro assembled a group of Deviants called Delta Force, made up of “heroic” Deviants. Sersi returned to Lemuria with Delta Force and was shocked to discover that her escape and return was all part of the plan of Lord Ghaur, who had been resurrected. Sersi found herself trapped in a new Uni-Mind created by Ghaur. Composed of the essences of Eternal, Olympian, Inhuman and human bloodlines, this new Uni-Mind granted Ghaur vast, additional powers. Nevertheless, Ghaur's plan was foiled though when the Black Knight escaped the arena in which he was forced to fight and used his photon blade to cut through the Uni-Mind on Ghaur's head, freeing Sersi and the others. Sersi explained that Ghaur's plan was foiled from the start, as a person can only take part in one Uni-Mind and she was already in one with the Black Knight. [Avengers (1st series) #370-371]

Although an annoyance at first, the Gann Josin bond began to cause trouble for the Black Knight, who began to show up at Sersi's side when she merely thought about him. Worse, his mental state began to deteriorate, as he started to feel Sersi's thoughts and could think about nothing except her. Sersi tried persuade Dane that they were meant to be and his infatuation with the married Crystal hopeless. It was at this emotional moment that the Gatherers struck again. Although they managed to escape the Gatherers, Sersi mood swings began to manifest in paranoia and she accused Dane of knowing more about their foes than he had told her. Things did not improve when the two returned to the Avengers Mansion to alert their teammates to the arrival of the new Gatherers. Upon arrival, Sersi was placed under arrest on suspicion of murder by a detective who had found the bodies of her two colleagues in the river. This infuriated Sersi and, beginning to doubt that the Avengers were her friends, flew off, destroying part of the Mansion in the process. She fled to the Brooklyn Bridge and was thinking the world was against her when she was found by Dane, who had been guided to her by the Gann Josin. As Sersi grew increasingly unstable during their conversation, Dane became disorientated himself and felt her pain. Indeed, Sersi convinced Dane that the Avengers were not their friends, so when the Avengers located them the two fought back. When Crystal managed to reach Dane, Sersi became even more enraged and she lashed out at Crystal, vowing that if the Avengers thought she was a killer, she would prove them right.

Seeing her injured and under threat from Sersi was enough for Dane’s love of Crystal to break the Uni-Mind that he shared with Sersi, overriding their Gann Josin. Sersi realized this when she looked in Dane's eyes. Dane tried to put the pieces of what was going on together – the Gatherers, Sersi being accused of murder – but he knew there is more going on and that they need to get help for Sersi. Sersi accused Dane of betraying her and lashed out, causing a massive tidal wave to wash over the Brooklyn Bridge, demolishing it. However, when she laid eyes on the destruction she had wrought, Sersi dropped to her knees, pleading to know what was making her do these things. As if in answer, she looked up and finally met Proctor, recognizing him as the man from her dreams. [Avengers (1st series) #372-373]

Now a prisoner of Proctor, Sersi learned that he was from another reality, one where that world's version of her chose him as her Gann Josin and that they served together in the Avengers, that is until she grew bored of him and left. Sersi tried to tell Proctor that she was not the same Sersi who abandoned him, but Proctor explained that, this being the Prime Earth, Sersi was the template from which all alternate reality Sersi's were based on. He had traveled across dozens of timelines and discovered that all Sersis were alike. It was at this point that Sersi realized that Proctor was not just in her dreams, but he had been stalking her and had killed any man seen in her company.  She further realized that through his Gann Josin connection with her counterpart from his reality, he had been the cause of her seizures and madness. Proctor saw a nice equity with that, as his Sersi had driven him mad. The true depth of his hatred of her was finally revealed when Sersi saw that, along with a captured Watcher, Proctor had stored hundreds of versions of her from alternate realities, corpses all.

At the same time, the Avengers were joined by the Eternals, and discovered the police officers that were turned to stone were not dead, meaning Sersi was not a murderer, and the Black Knight learned that Proctor was his alternate reality counterpart. [Avengers (1st series) #374]

With Sersi as his prisoner, Proctor sought to destroy the Avengers, as he had done in every reality before. Trapped in an energy field along with the captive Watcher, Sersi watched as Proctor and his Gatherers did battle with the Avengers. By this time, the Avengers had discovered that Proctor was an alternate version of the Black Knight. Dane was nevertheless surprised when Proctor produced his own Ebony Blade, which he stated he had used to kill his reality’s Sersi. Proctor announced that he hated this world's Dane, too – because he rejected Sersi's love, whereas on his world Sersi rejected him. As the two fought, Sersi combined her powers with Ute, the captive Watcher, and freed themselves from their energy vortex prison. With a cold rage, Sersi picked up the Ebony Blade that Proctor had dropped during his battle and, in the name of all of his victims, Sersi slayed Proctor with his own sword.

Despite Proctor being dead, Sersi was not out of danger, for the mental manipulation he had made her suffer had caused irreversible damage. By this point, several Eternals had arrived and confirmed that the madness could not be stopped and so Sersi resigned herself to the fact that she could not live. To everyone’s surprise, Ute the Watcher, who blamed himself for Proctor using his abilities to traverse realities, announced that there was another way and that he sought to make recompense. Before dying, Ute used his powers to undo all of the damage that had been caused, repairing Avengers Mansion and the Brooklyn Bridge, and finally to create a portal. Sersi could feel the pull of the portal and realized that, if she stepped through the dimensional rift, she should be able to live in a pocket reality, free of the madness and free of Proctors' curse. Dane announced that he would go with Sersi and said his goodbyes to Crystal. Ignoring the pleas from their teammates, Sersi and Dane took each other's hand and stepped through the dimensional rift.
