BIOGRAPHY - part 6

As Sersi and the Black Knight floated through the portal created by Ute, they tried to stay together, but ultimately became separated. They each landed separately in the reality known as the Ultraverse, where Sersi found herself in Africa. Almost immediately upon arrival, however, Sersi heard a mental summons that she felt she could not resist. She flew across the planet and recovered an infinity gem unknown to this point – the “ego gem.” The source of the voice was a cosmic entity calling herself Nemesis, who claimed to have predated the current multiverse and been the embodiment of all seven infinity gems. While the previous known six had remained in the 616 universe, the seventh ego gem had found itself in the Ultraverse. Now detecting Sersi and realizing she was from her native reality, Nemesis intended to use the Eternal as her vessel and be reunited with the other gems.

Nevertheless, Sersi did her best to fight Nemesis’ control of her, some times less successfully than others. During her lucid moments, Sersi sought out the Black Knight, following the remnants of their connection. It was Dane, however, that accidentally summoned Sersi to him, when a sorceress aiding him cast a spell to help summon the Avengers to help in his fight against Loki. Upon arrival, Nemesis took full control of Sersi and killed the sorceress and then attacked the Black Knight and his Ultra Force ally. Fortunately, Dane’s connection with Sersi, either through their psychic rapport or their shared feelings, was enough to snap her out of Nemesis’ control, at least for the moment.

Everything became more complicated with the arrival of the Elder of the Universe known as the Gamesmaster, who was also looking for the Infinity Gems. Once again, Nemesis took control of Sersi and arranged a wager between the two schemers, pitting the heroes or Ultra Force against the Avengers. Although Loki won, Nemesis used the presence of all gems to merge with her own, making her whole once more and, more importantly, all powerful. No longer needing her, Nemesis cast out Sersi, freeing her and then proceeded to destroy both universes by merging them, extending her power and influence more. Fortunately, heroes still existed in this merged universe, Sersi among them, and not only rose to fight Nemesis but defeated her. In the end, both universes were restored and the Avengers returned home with only vague memories of what had transpired. Sersi herself voiced that she could feel a hole in her memory, but could not explain it. In that hole was the memory of the Black Knight, who found himself still in the Ultraverse. [Note: a panel at the end of Ultra Force / Avengers #1 clearly shows that Sersi had been returned to Prime Earth with the Avengers. Despite this, she is not seen again on Earth during the Onslaught Saga which followed soon after and no mention is made of her absence. Similarly, she does not appear in the rebuilt Ultraverse. However, when she appears next, it is with the Black Knight and the pair are together attempting to return to the 616 Universe. While clearly a continuity error, it is likely a deliberate one. At the time, Marvel seemed to be embarking on an editorial decision to ignore all reference to the Ultraverse, including the Black Knight and Sersi’s time there. Read in this light, it does seem that their next appearance together in Black Knight: Exodus was intended to take place almost directly after their last appearance in Avengers (1st series) #375, with their time in the Ultraverse completely retconned. Simultaneously, an untold story in which Sersi returned to the Ultraverse to retrieve Dane could also explain the discrepancy. ]

With great effort, Sersi managed to open a portal back to their home reality. However, when she and Dane arrived back on their Earth, it was the Twelfth Century and the pair were separated. When Sersi did find him, she discovered that Dane’s consciousness inhabited the body of his ancestor, Eobar Garrington, a descendant of Sir Percy of Scandia, the original Black Knight. As Eobar, Dane became a soldier of the Crusades. Sersi retained her memories during this time and plotted to reunite with Dane/Eobar. Unfortunately for her, she was discovered by other knights on the Crusade and, worse, when her powers backfired was declared a witch. Before they could harm her, Sersi was rescued by Dane/Eobar, who admitted that he found Sersi familiar. This kindness earned Eobar the enmity of one of fellow Crusader Bennet du Paris, who was on a question to find the domain of an “eternal pharaoh” in a place called Akkaba, where he planned to travel and gain greater power. Although Bennet left them behind in his rage, the Black Knight and Sersi followed as best they could. Along the way, Sersi revealed to him that they did know each other, with Sersi revealing to Eobar that his descendant's soul was trapped inside him. Realizing that he must die so that his descendant’s soul could live, Eobar allowed Sersi to remove his soul, allowing Dane Whitman’s soul, personality and memories to gain full control of his body.

Almost immediately thereafter, Sersi and Dane were attacked by a servant of Apocalypse, for Bennet had located Akkaba and his own mutant powers had been activated. Sersi and Dane were taken captive by Akkaba where they met Bennet, now transformed into a being calling himself Exodus. It was only at this moment that Sersi, having fought Exodus back in her time, realized that he and Bennet were one at the same. Unaware of any of this, Apocalypse demanded that Exodus kill Sersi and Dane to prove his loyalty to him. Though they fought, out of his friendship to Eobar, Exodus could not kill the Black Knight and instead turned on his own master. Disappointed more than anything at the insolence, Apocalypse declared that he could take away whatever power he gave and with that the two disappeared in a flash of light. Six months later, with the help of the Ebony Blade, Sersi and Dane found Exodus in a tomb in the Swiss Alps, where he was held in stasis. With members of the Crusades watching over Exodus, Sersi and Dane set out to return to their true time. [Black Knight: Exodus #1]

As they two traveled through time toward the present day, the two became separated when a force wrenched Sersi from the Knight’s grasp mid-jump. Sersi found herself in Deviant Lemuria, along with any remainder of her Gann Josin link with Dane now permanently shattered. Immediately captured by Deviants, Sersi was brought before a giant statue of Ghaur, which actually housed his essence. The non-corporeal Ghaur explained his plan to use Sersi to create a Uni-Mind for Deviants that would enable him to take over the mind of a Celestial and use its power to destroy the other Celestials. Already, Ghaur had captured Thena and threatened the life of her twin children if she did not assist. However, before a brain mine could be used to force her to comply, the Deviant Kro and his Kommandos arrived to free Sersi, allowing her to escape via blind teleportation. Immediately, Sersi sought out the aid of the likes of the Avengers and Fantastic Four, only to discover that they were apparently dead, having recently sacrificed themselves to stop a being called Onslaught. She did, however, find the Black Knight, who in this Avengers-less world was now working with the Heroes for Hire. Acting quickly, the Heroes accompanied Sersi to Lemuria, only to find Ghaur and his Deviant horde waiting for them. Although the battled initially went in his favor and Ghaur succeeded in coercing Sersi into helping him by threatening the life of the captive Black Knight, Ghaur was ultimately defeated. With the crisis passed, Sersi took this opportunity to confront Dane, asking him what the two of them had, now that the Gann Josin was broken. Dane confessed that he was still grieving for Crystal who died in the Onslaught crisis and that he needed time to think. As angry as she was hurt, Sersi reminded Dane that he was mortal and that he didn't have time. With that, she teleported away. [Heroes for Hire (1st series) #6-7]

With the Avengers no longer in operation following the active team being killed by Onslaught, Sersi opted to return to Olympia. A short time later, the presumed dead heroes returned to Earth, and former members of the Avengers began to fall under attack from foes of magical origin. Sersi answered the call that went out to all former members of the Avengers and gathered at Avengers Mansion. Among all those who had called themselves Avengers, Sersi seemed to mostly spend time with and talk to her cousin, Starfox, rather than Dane or any of the Avengers with whom she had served. When the cause of the Avengers' troubles was identified as Morgan le Fay, Sersi, like all of the Avengers, became trapped in a pocket reality replicating Medieval times, where she was known as Circe and served as part of the Queen's Vengeance. Morgan was eventually defeated by the combined effort of the Avengers and reality was restored. When the Avengers were settling on a new roster, Sersi declined membership, preferring to return to Olympia. She appeared to bear no ill will towards her former teammates though and asked them to invite her if they were throwing any parties. [Avengers (3rd series) #1-4]

Sersi and her fellow Eternals soon became embroiled in a looming war with the ancient mutant Apocalypse. The threat of exposing the existence of the Eternals to the general human populace proved controversial for the Eternals but, rather than reveal their existence, several of them appeared before reporters as a new team of super heroes called the New Breed. Sersi took the codename Mesmer, but the New Breed never appeared again as a team, nor did they pursue the war against Apocalypse. [New Eternals: Apocalypse Now #1]

Sersi maintained a low-profile for some time. Nevertheless, she did answer the call to assemble when all inactive Avengers were summoned to Avengers Mansion when the Avengers were under attack. [Avengers (1st series) #501-502]

Around the time of the first super-hero Civil War, the Eternal known as Sprite made a momentous decision which affected all his fellow Eternals. Tired of being child-aged after untold millennia and wanting to grow up like the other Eternals, Sprite used the power of the Dreaming Celestial to remove the memories and powers of all Eternals, turning them into aging mortals. [Eternals (3rd series) #4] Much like her true self, this human Sersi was interested in fashion and parties. However, unlike her true self, this Sersi was dirt poor and was even forced to borrow money from her friend, Abi. Her luck soon changed, though, when her website partiesbysersi.com attracted some interest and she was hired by the embassy of a former Soviet republic, Vorozheika, to plan an elaborate party in New York to generate some tourism interest in the nation. After being awake for 26-hours straight working on the party arrangements, Sersi went to get coffee and met a man called Mark Curry, a doctor who happened to be her old lover Makkari, another Eternal who had lost his memory. There was instant attraction between the two and Sersi invited Mark to the party she was planning as her plus one.

The party began successfully, attended by celebrities and important business and scientific figures. Among these luminaries included other Eternals living civilian lives. Unfortunately, the party was attacked by terrorists who kidnapped several scientists, including another Eternal, Thena. Fortunately, several reality-star heroes were at the party and were able to take down the terrorists. Iron Man arrived soon thereafter and, recognizing Sersi, assumed that she had participated in the fight. Taking her aside, Iron Man informed her that, as a former Avenger, she had a duty to register under the Superhuman Registration Act, or face possible consequences. Confused, Sersi claimed not only that she was not a former Avenger, but that she was not a super hero or possessed any powers. Assuming she was playing dumb, Iron Man allowed her a pass this time but told her that it would not be possible for her to remain neutral forever.

The conversation with Iron Man troubled Sersi, who later took some time to herself to reflect on their discussion. Similarly, when Iron Man pulled up the Avengers file on Sersi, he discovered that no records existed. [Eternals (3rd series) #1-3]

Iron Man’s words haunted Sersi, however, and she brooded on them as she sunbathed atop her building’s roof. However, just as she had convinced herself that it could not be true, Sersi subconsciously transmorphed a passing cat into a dragon, convincing her that something was going on. Nevertheless, Sersi did her best to put this out of her mind as she embarked on a search for a new job. While trawling the want ads of the newspaper in her apartment, she was visited by Ikaris and Thena, both of whom had had their memories restored. At first, Sersi assumed that Iron Man had sent them and explained that she still wasn't interested in registering, that she just wanted a new life. However, Ikaris replied that he wasn't leaving without Sersi, as they needed her transmutative powers. When Sersi's friend Abi suddenly arrived home across them, Ikaris wiped her memories of them, including of Sersi. Sersi was still unsure until she learned that their enemy had Makkari, whom she knew as Mark Curry, for whom she felt great affection. Although she stated that she would probably regret it, Sersi agreed to let Ikaris restore her memories and help her fellow Eternals.

Sersi, Ikaris and Thena arrived at the site of the Dreaming Celestial, where they found Sprite, only now he was a captive of two Deviants. Believing the Dreaming Celestial was the only one of their gods who cared for them, the two Deviants intended to use the unconscious mind of their captive Makkari to awaken the space god. Matters became more complicated with the arrival of the Avengers, who were investigating the seismic disturbances of the Dreaming Celestial emerging from deep underground. Nevertheless, the Eternals were able to placate the heroes and defeat the Deviants. Forming a Uni-Mind, Sersi and the other Eternals made contact with the Celestial, though it was Makkari who convinced it to take the time to judge the world properly before rendering a judgement. In the meantime, the Celestial was content to stand motionless, towering over the San Franciscan park. [Eternals (3rd series) #4-6]

Having regained all of her powers, Sersi later met with Tony Stark along at a high-end restaurant. She explained that she was wealthy again, having turned some trash into gold and bought a loft in which to throw parties. When Tony appealed to her about being an Avenger again, she admitted that she couldn’t really remember that life. Visibly uncomfortable, she declared that coming was a mistake and left.
