BIOGRAPHY - part 3

Relaxing at one of her apartments, Sersi was delighted to receive a phone call from Captain America, who was in need of her help. Cap was about to go undercover to find some missing teenagers, but needed someone to alter his appearance. When the other magicians that he knew proved unavailable, he had remembered the party invitations Sersi had been sending to the Avengers and that she could alter molecules. Sersi was seductively reclined on a sofa when Captain America arrived and was very forward in making clear her attraction to him. Nevertheless, Sersi did as asked and altered Captain America's molecules, transforming him into a 15-year old, with her spell set to last 48 hours.

Captain America was so impressed with Sersi's skill that he suggested she consider joining the Avengers. Sersi, however, was not interested in world-saving and, after agreeing to let Cap store his shield at her apartment (as he could no longer carry it), she made another pass at him before he departed, telling him that he would owe her a favor. Fortunately for Captain America, who was overwhelmed during his undercover assignment, Sersi had put a fail-safe on her spell, by which Captain America could only receive 50 punches by an opponent before he would return to his present-day form. Sersi had a romantic dinner complete with a string quartet waiting for Captain America when he returned to her apartment to collect his shield. Sersi licked her lips as Captain America told her that he didn't like having outstanding debt, to which Sersi rubbed his legs with her bare feet and told him not to think of this as debt, but the beginning of a beautiful friendship. At her penthouse one day, Sersi was happy when Captain America made another unexpected visit – only it wasn't a social call. Gilgamesh the Forgotten One, one of Sersi's fellow Eternal and more recently a member of the Avengers, appeared near death, drained of all his energies. Sersi was shocked at the state of the Forgotten One, having never seen an Eternal in his condition before. Unable to help him on her own, Sersi accompanied the Avengers to Olympia. However, when they reached Greece, they discovered the sacred city of the Eternals had vanished. Sersi reached out with her great power but could find no trace of Olympia or the Eternals on Earth. Thor soon ascertained that Olympia was in the Negative Zone and, despite the dangers of entering that odd reality, the Avengers knew that to save both Olympia and Gilgamesh they had to enter the Negative Zone.

After a short time flying through the that reality, Sersi and the Avengers located Olympia, which was now broken and rundown. They could find no sign of life and so split into groups to search the city. Sersi was accompanied by She-Hulk, and together they entered the Heart of Olympia, which Sersi was shocked to see had been shattered. However, in the Heart of Olympia, Sersi could sense that the Eternals were near. Unfortunately, Sersi soon began to suffer the same condition that had befallen Gilgamesh, and she started to vanish. The Avengers were attacked by Blastaar, who boasted about killing the Eternals. However, before long, Sersi, along with all of the other Eternals on Olympia, began to re-appear. Apparently, after taking the injured Blastaar into their care, the Eternals were slain by him. However, as Eternals were nearly impossible to kill, Blastaar's attacks had only disrupted the Eternals' at their atomic level and it took longer than usual for them to reform. Blastaar was defeated, and Sersi was happy to announce that there was no death in Olympia. [Avengers (1st series) #308-310]

When Ghaur managed to usurp power in Atlantis, Sersi assisted Captain America and the Avengers in the battle against his forces, her expertise in Deviant history proving invaluable to Captain America during the assignment. [Atlantis Attacks crossover]

Sersi was called on by Captain America yet again when he arrived at her apartment while she was decorating for Christmas. Sersi embraced Captain America, who told her that he wanted to be serious and invited her to join the Avengers. Before she could respond, the two were struck by a strange energy. They knew that for Sersi to be afflicted by the energy it must be serious and, following Captain America to his private Quinjet, Sersi accepted his offer to join the Avengers. As the Avengers worked to determine the cause of the mysterious energy attack, Sersi used her telepathic powers to reach out across the planet, ascertaining that the attacked happened around the entire world at the same time. The Avengers soon deduced that the energy attack was in fact the universe “blinking out” of existence for brief moments. When the attacks became more frequent, Sersi exerted awesome control over not only her own molecules but the molecules of the Avengers with her and the communications room they were in. Thus, when the universe next “blinked out” of existence, Sersi was able to resist. Although the exercise left her weak, she had succeeded in preventing the Avengers from vanishing, while the rest of the universe was seemingly gone. When the Avengers noticed a science laboratory floating in the void nearby, Sersi used her powers to complete a telepathic sweep of it and realized that it was the source of the evil. In her weakened state, Sersi was left out of battle between the Avengers and the culprit behind the source of the universe vanishing: Nebula. Fortunately, the Avengers prevailed and the universe was restored. [Avengers (1st series) #314-315]

After missions in outer space averting cosmic calamity and on Earth avoiding an international disaster, Sersi was keen to throw a party for her new teammates to attend. And, as Captain America had still never attended one of her events, she insisted he must join her at this one. To her annoyance, Sersi met Captain America's companion, Rachel Leighton, who attended the party with Cap. Sersi didn't let Rachel being there stop her flirting with Cap, though. Sersi's parties were always spectacular events and this one proved no different when the Avengers Support Crew, who had been mind-controlled by enemies of Captain America, tried to kill the Avengers. The plan was foiled, and Sersi lamented yet another party being ruined. [Avengers (1st series) #325]

Sersi continued to work well as part of the Avengers, even going as far to help use her powers to create the new “A” logo to go on the meeting room table at the new Avengers HQ. Sersi also gave Captain America a recreation of his old scrapbook that was destroyed when Hydrobase sank by using her powers to “Xerox” the past, ensuring that Captain America would never lose those old memories. Sersi even became overprotective of Captain America, leaping to his defense when she thought he was being attacked by the teenager called Rage by blasting Rage back with her powers. Later, when the Avengers vanished during an investigation, Sersi was annoyed when Captain America's companion, Rachel Leighton, came looking for him when news of their disappearance reached the media. Sersi listened in on Captain America and Rachel's conversation, and was quite happy to tell Rachel – who was also known as Diamondback – that diamonds aren't forever but that she – and the ever-youthful Captain America – were. Sersi and the Avengers soon became alerted to a being known as Thane Ector and his Brethren, who had apparently escaped from the Collector's collection and were seeking to conquer Earth. The Avengers clashed with the Brethren in Paris and, during the battle, Sersi was defeated by Thane, who took her captive. Thane’s actions surprised the other Brethren, as taking captives was not part of their modus operandi. Held prisoner in the Brethren's citadel, Sersi was placed in shackles that, when she tried to alter their molecule structure so she could escape them, strangely reverted to their true form. When Thane Ector boasted of destroying the Avengers, Sersi's only concern was for the safety of Captain America and attempted to attack her captor. Thane, however, grabbed her and kissed her, telling her that he was a being like she – made flesh by the Celestials. Sersi was left confused by this encounter and spent her time reading the sacred scrolls of the Brethren, attempting to ascertain what information about them that she could. This angered Sybil Dorn, another of the Brethren, who disapproved of Thane Ector taking Sersi as a captive. Sersi and Sybil fought, during which time Sybil reverted to her true form – literally made up of muck and grime. Sersi was nearly suffocated until Thane Ector rescued her, blasting Sybil away and angering his companion, who warned him that the Brethren would learn of his betrayal. Sersi, meanwhile, learned firsthand from Thane that the Brethren indeed were created by the Celestials but, because they were made from shame, they would kill every race that they encountered, jealous of them.

Sersi was with Thane Ector and the other members of the Brethren when they learned that the Collector, their captor, was alive and with the Avengers. The Brethren were determined to destroy the Collector, who had used them as pawns, and Thane Ector sought something greater for his people. However, during a confrontation with the Collector, the Brethren discovered that he had allowed them to escape, so that they could carry out their natural destructive instinct on Earth, enabling him to collect humanity's survivors. Sersi rushed to Thane's side after the Collector attacked him and, as he died, he lamented his belief that he could be something more than he was created for. Sersi tried to encourage Thane and, when most of the Brethren were reduced to their true form and set-out to destroy humanity, she used her ability to tap into the Uni-Mind to create a version of it between Thane and another Brethren. As this other Brethren was in telepathic communication with all of the Brethren who had reverted to their true form, it not only enabled them to prevent the destruction of humanity but also demonstrated a heroic act by pulling the Collector into the mini Uni-Mind, seemingly destroying the cosmic being, too. Sersi kissed Thane as he died in her arms and, in the aftermath, was comforted by Captain America as she wondered how she could have cared for someone she should have despised. [Avengers (1st series) #334-339]

Following Thane's death, Sersi took some time off from the Avengers and tried to return to her carefree attitude, enjoying parties with Hercules and attending the theater with him. Nevertheless, Sersi’s continued to make romantic advances towards Captain America, even during training sessions where Captain America helped her to fight without her powers. [Thor (1st series) #437, Avengers Annual (1st series) #20, Captain America (1st series) #394] Sersi was soon reunited with her fellow Eternals on a mission to protect Thena's twins. [Eternals: The Herod Factor #1]

One evening, Sersi begrudgingly left a party to investigate a break-in at the abandoned Serpent Society Headquarters. There, she found Impala, Asp and Black Mamba (although she didn't care to learn their names) attempting to steal an old Serpent Society aircraft. So, choosing poetic justice, Sersi transformed them into snakes. After Sersi transformed her back into her true self, Black Mamba demonstrated her ability to form the image of a person someone loves and created the form of someone called Telemachus, surprising the Eternal. Sersi eventually transformed the others back and, after learning that they were doing a favor for Cap's girlfriend, Diamondback, the unimpressed Sersi let the women steal the aircraft, even using her powers to give them the boost they needed to leave the headquarters. Returning to Avengers Mansion after her time off, Sersi learned that the Avengers were locked in battle at Four Freedoms Plaza. She prepared to go join them but, as she passed a mirror, she was shocked by something she saw. She collapsed to the floor, begging to Zuras for something not to happen to her again.
