A malevolent Loa spirit called Moondog the Malicious possessed an accountant named Wally Bevins down in New Orleans. He used his magic to assemble a cult of worshippers until Brother Voodoo disposed of the violent mob. Moondog fled to New York where he restarted his practices, and Jericho followed. Brother Voodoo crossed paths with Spider-Man and they joined forces against Moondog. They tracked the cult to the Shelby Theatre where Moondog used the guise of an off-Broadway voodoo play to gather worshippers. Moondog captured the heroes and tried to burn them at the stake, but Jericho was immune to such a demise and escaped when the fire burned through his bonds. With Daniel’s spirit possessing a minion, the Brothers Voodoo cornered Moondog on the catwalk and tricked the Loa into leaving the body of Wally Bevins for fear of his host’s death. Jericho was entertaining Loralee at his mansion when Chief Detective Tate brought him word of a zombie incident back home in Port-au-Prince. Brother Voodoo and Bambu journeyed home to Haiti, where Jericho’s friend Sarah le Jeune wrote about the return of her late husband. Brother Voodoo found Sarah dead at the hands of her zuvembie husband, and her child missing. Jericho traced the zombies to a nearby graveyard occupied by Dramabu, the Death-Lord. A burgeoning voodoo priest, Dramabu had turned his back on modern society to return to the old ways and intended to sacrifice Sarah’s daughter to the Loa of death. Not yet powerful enough to master the sacrifice himself, Dramabu restored the body of Papa Jambo to lead him in the ritual as a superior houngan.

Brother Voodoo arrived to find his mentor’s grave desecrated and laid into the zombie hordes raised by Dramabu. The double strength and mastery over fire commanded by Jericho made quick work of his attackers, but Dramabu escaped with his prizes in the confusion. As he approached the sacrifice in action, Jericho compelled the spirit of his brother to fly forth and possess the corpse of Papa Jambo, halting the ritual dagger. While Brother Voodoo again contended with the reanimated corpses of his fellow villagers, the spirit of Daniel Drumm flew against Jericho’s will and sought out Charles le Jeune. Through Daniel’s strength, Sarah’s dead husband regained his senses and warned Jericho to focus on Dramabu rather than fighting the helpless innocents he used as an army. To emphasize the point, Daniel’s spirit rushed forth to possess the child, lending her the strength to protect herself against Dramabu’s latest attack. Dramabu fell over a cliff while contending with the child-Daniel, and the spirit of Jericho’s brother soon returned to him. Brother Voodoo realized there was more to his brother’s lingering spirit than he had guessed before then. [Tales of the Zombie #10]

The Loa once spoke to Jericho and told him his presence was needed in Brazil. Brother Voodoo came across Frank Drake, an amateur vampire hunter who worked with Quincy Harker and Rachel van Helsing towards the destruction of his devilish ancestor, Vlad Dracula. The vampire’s thralls had laid a trap for Drake and he was accosted by zombies. Brother Voodoo helped Frank fight off the zombies, and then also aided the man with his crisis of faith. Frank Drake lacked the generations of training Harker and van Helsing had fighting vampires, and feared he was a coward next to their intensity and devotion to the cause. Dr. Drumm instead diagnosed Frank as a man of great courage who merely lacked faith in that courage. Jericho’s assurances and confidence in him gave Frank Drake the boost he needed to return to the hunt for Dracula. [Tomb of Dracula (1st series) #34-37]

Brother Voodoo next became involved in a complicated spiritual plot involving the Three Who Are All and their pawns, the werewolf Jack Russell and the former werewolf Raymond Coker. Raymond sought out Brother Voodoo after his great-grandfather was raised as a zombie and murdered his living family. Coker, Jericho, Jack and his friend Topaz all had visions of the Three, guiding them further together. A horde of zombies attacked the group and kidnapped Coker. Jericho noted curiously that these were not real zombies but disappeared into colored light and smoke when defeated. Brother Voodoo, Jack and Topaz prepared to leave for the Devil’s Grotto in Haiti in pursuit of Coker. Because they traveled during the full moon, Jericho lent Daniel’s spirit to Jack, strengthening and reinforcing Russell’s own will to prevent his transformations.

In Haiti, they were attacked by another band of true zombies while approaching the Grotto. Jericho was forced to recall Daniel’s spirit in battle, but Jack’s will was now strong enough to guide his savage werewolf well enough. They discovered Jack’s old enemy Doctor Glitternight was responsible for their troubles. The doctor used real zombies as a template to mass-produce solid light simulacra zombies through his immense power. Glitternight sought to corrupt the souls of humanity, and so sending a wandering spirit to possess him was probably not Jericho’s wisest plan. Doctor Glitternight infused Daniel’s spirit with his own evil before sending it back at Jericho, leaving Brother Voodoo writhing in anguish as he fought to purify his brother’s spirit from within. Doctor Glitternight fled further into the caverns of Devil’s Grotto with Coker and now Topaz as hostages, while a significantly weakened Jericho and Jack pursued them.

As they journeyed through the folds of reality to find their friends, Jack and Jericho met with the Three Who Are All. They revealed that Doctor Glitternight had once been one of their order before he betrayed them and was cast out. Glitternight formed a massive black egg to house his power and his prizes, and the adventurers fought to enter. Jack’s werewolf penetrated the egg, but only Daniel’s spirit could join him as Jericho remained trapped outside. Daniel Drumm normally lacked autonomy, his silent spirit merely an extension of Jericho’s will, so all three were surprised when Daniel could speak and interact with Jack directly inside Glitternight’s strange world of death. Topaz was corrupted into a fiendish harpy by Glitternight, and so Daniel reversed the doctor’s previous ploy by using his own pure soul to enter Topaz and cleanse her of Glitternight’s corruption. Daniel and Jericho reunited for the final conflict where Glitternight was defeated. Brother Voodoo worked afterwards to help Raymond Coker return his Papa Jaranda to true rest. When prominent minds in the black community started disappearing, Brother Voodoo got involved in the investigation. He and the Thing of the Fantastic Four discovered the Black Panther missing from New York and teamed up to find King T’Challa. A witch doctor named W’Sulli and his ally, the former super-villain Kenji Obatu, had captured the spirit of a vampire in a sacred govi urn, turning it into a powerful zombie under their sway. With this pawn, they hoped to gain power in an African nation by presenting the local warlord with their brilliant captives as his new indentured servants. Jericho and Ben Grimm chased them to Africa, and Brother Voodoo recognized the significance of the govi. He directed the Thing to smash the urns, freeing the newly captured spirits of the prisoners, including T’Challa and the vampire. The creature turned on his masters, and W’Sulli and Obatu were quickly killed. Brother Voodoo and the other heroes got the hostages safely back to their home countries. [Marvel Two-In-One #41]

[Note: Released in 1978, the above issue dealt with the very topical real life figure Idi Amin and his rule in Uganda. Given the sliding timescale, the specific nation and ruler are likely no longer canon for the story.]

Brother Voodoo had long wielded the wangal amulet of his first foe, the zobop false god Damballah. The demon Damballah, the dark houngan’s patron, was still connected to the amulet and was able to possess Brother Voodoo by inhabiting his brother’s Loa. In Jericho’s body, the demon sought out Doctor Strange and fed him some lies and half-truths in the hopes of possessing the Sorcerer Supreme next. The Eye of Agamotto saw through the ruse, however, and Damballah fled Jericho’s body. With Damballah still merged with Daniel’s Loa, Jericho was weakened and so Doctor Strange pursued the demon alone. Damballah passed through several hosts and followers before doubling back to attack the Sanctum Sanctorum again. Damballah was captured and, working together, Stephen and Jericho freed Daniel’s spirit from the demon’s grasp and sealed Damballah’s essence inside the wangal. [Doctor Strange (2nd series) #48]

In the port cities of Haiti, Brother Voodoo found Moon Knight working as a mercenary. He was hired on behalf of the Haitian head of security, Giscard, to counter a group of revolutionary terrorists. They joined forces to seek out the terrorists’ base, fighting soldiers and zombies in the process. Moon Knight discovered Giscard was not only the leader of the terrorists, he was also a houngan named Grand Bois who commanded the zombie ancestors of his men, forcing their compliance. Once Brother Voodoo identified the wangal skull stone that focused Grand Bois’ power, Moon Knight had it shot to pieces by his Moon-Copter. No longer able to demand his men’s loyalty, Giscard was defeated and arrested. When he learned his fee was illegally seized from the Haitian treasury, Moon Knight gave it back to Brother Voodoo to perhaps turn the terrorist stronghold into a hospital or something useful to the country.
