After the siege of Asgard, the Young Avengers were officially recognized as Avengers by Steve Rogers and operated publicly when the Registration Act was rescinded. [Avengers (4th series) #1] During a mission against the Sons of the Serpent, however, Hulkling was threatened by one of the Sons who possessed a nuclear device. Wiccan went into a trance and dealt with the threat without consciously thinking about it, knocking twenty terrorists into comas and eliminating the nuke. The Avengers became concerned about Billy's power levels. Although they didn't necessarily believe Wiccan's theory about being the Scarlet Witch's son, any connection to Wanda still made them leery over what Wiccan could do.

Captain America and Iron Man proposed Wiccan remain at Avengers Tower for the foreseeable future to run tests on his power levels. Billy initially rejected the idea of being prodded, but Cap met with the Kaplans and convinced Billy and his parents to accept the precautions, for everyone's sake. Teddy insisted on coming along, and so a room was made up for him in the tower as well. Speed and the other Young Avengers, thinking Wiccan and Hulkling had been taken against their will, broke into Avengers Tower and removed them before they could explain. Stature suggested the real problem was the Scarlet Witch, who was still missing since the House of M crisis. Cassie reasoned that Wanda Maximoff had gone mad in the first place because her children were taken from her. However, if Tommy and Billy convinced her they were her sons reincarnated, Wanda might regain her sanity, undo the mutant Decimation, even maybe bring Cassie's dad Ant-Man back to life like she did with Hawkeye and Wonder Man. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #1]

Magneto agreed. The Master of Magnetism had learned about Wiccan and Speed, and was interested in getting to know his grandsons while helping in their search for his daughter. Chatting with Magneto did nothing to alleviate the fears of the Avengers who came looking for the Young Avengers, especially Wolverine, who still intended to kill Wanda for her part in M-Day. Magneto and the Young Avengers teleported to Transia to begin their search for Wanda. At the grave of Magneto's wife Magda, he, Wiccan and Speed linked hands to reach out with Billy's magic and their connections to Wanda. Although they sensed a Maximoff nearby in a Transian village, what they discovered was Quicksilver. "Uncle Pete" wanted to find his sister as well, but not if it meant Magneto corrupting her or the Young Avengers. A confrontation between Quicksilver and Magneto revealed the existence of a woman who looked like Wanda in the village, but she was damaged and exposed as a Doombot. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #2]

Wiccan was dead set on following this lead to the end, but even Hulkling was reluctant to join with Magneto in invading Latveria to fight Doctor Doom. While his various friends and allies were busy arguing over each others' motives and trustworthiness, Billy just wanted to find his "mom." Wiccan snuck away in the night to infiltrate Castle Doom. To expedite his search, Billy simply appeared before a squad of Doombots cloaked in a glamour that made him look like Wanda Maximoff. Asking for an escort back to "her" room, Wiccan was brought straight to Wanda's quarters. However, the woman he met had no memory of the Avengers or being the Scarlet Witch. She remembered only being a simple peasant girl in Transia who was now engaged to marry Victor von Doom. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #3]

Doom caught Wiccan in Wanda's room and knocked him out before he could reveal Wanda's past to her. Victor's behavior alone was enough to pique Wanda's suspicions, though, and she privately met with Billy to learn more of what he had to say. Doctor Doom had inhibited Wiccan's powers, and so he prepared to escape the castle with Wanda's help while explaining her history to her. Castle Doom became a gathering point before he could leave, as not only did Magneto, Quicksilver and the Young Avengers realize Billy was missing, but Wonder Man and the Avengers had also tracked them to Latveria. In the chaotic melee that erupted, Wolverine located them first and was prepared to murder Wiccan and Wanda to prevent them from becoming uncontrollable again. Instead, Wolverine was blasted aside by Iron Lad, who had returned to the present to save Billy. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #4]

Wiccan and the Young Avengers reassembled around Iron Lad, who was able to transport them and Wanda Maximoff away from the battle and into the timestream. Wanda still didn't believe Wiccan's claims about her being a witch and super-hero, much less being his mother in spirit. The Young Avengers decided to visit the day Wanda went mad and attacked the Avengers in the hopes of jarring her memory. Iron Lad intended for them to materialize out of synch with the past, but his technology failed and Stature met with her father Ant-Man moments before his death thanks to the undead Jack of Hearts, who had been restored by Wanda. Seeing Jack rekindled Wanda's memory, and she instinctively transported Ant-Man and the Young Avengers back into the present with her rediscovered powers. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #5]

As the Scarlet Witch relived her memories, her emotions from that day were recovered as well. Wanda teetered on the brink of madness again, reverting to the state of mind she was in when she last experienced her powers. Wiccan appealed to Wanda once more, and broke through the fog surrounding her mind. The Scarlet Witch confirmed that Wiccan and Speed WERE the transmigrated souls of her lost children, somehow reincarnated by her power subconsciously as it began growing out of control years earlier. This touchstone allowed her to balance herself while holding on to both her senses and her powers. Wanda was lovingly reunited with Billy and Tommy, and they shared a tender reunion for a brief moment. [Avengers: The Children's Crusade #6]

What followed was not so tender. Wanda revealed her reality-altering powers were not natural, but the result of a spell cast with the assistance of Doctor Doom to tap into the Life Force of Earth, presumably the same as the power of the Demiurge. It was the addition of this excess power which drove her to madness. Wanda attempted to reverse the damage she had caused with the Decimation, but was opposed by the suspicious X-Men. Doctor Doom arrived to aid her, but ended up claiming the power of the Life Force for himself and then losing it. Most of the Decimated mutants remained powerless, Wanda lost her excess power and trust in Victor, and Wiccan's teammates Stature and Vision were killed before the day was out.

The Young Avengers disbanded and many of the remaining members went their separate ways. Wiccan retreated into himself emotionally, blaming his own quest for Wanda for all that happened to his friends as a result. Speed and Hulkling tried to shake him our of his malaise, but Wiccan would not budge for months. Finally, Teddy got through to Billy with a speech about learning from his mistakes and trying again, instead of just not trying at all. He also caught Billy's attention with the end of his speech, where he promised to stand by him no matter what... till death do they part. The newly engaged Wiccan and Hulkling finally met up with Captain America and the Avengers to see the unveiling of Stature and Vision's memorial statues in the mansion's gardens, reminding them again of the phrase "Once an Avenger, always an Avenger."
