All was not well with Teddy, however, for Loki had planted an idea in his head that he couldn't shake. Loki had called him an “improbably dashing prince,” leading Teddy to question the likelihood of a gay, handsome, shape-changing super-hero attending the same school as Billy, AND falling in love with him. If Billy had the power to alter reality on a whim, who's to say he was aware of every whim he had? Could Billy have created Teddy to be his boyfriend, even without knowing it? How could Teddy ever know for sure? These questions pained Teddy, who didn't blame Billy and still loved him, but needed some distance in order to prove to himself that his feelings were real. That HE was real. Wiccan understood what Hulkling was feeling and allowed him to go, which only further made Teddy doubt whether he could have left if Billy didn't allow it. (And yes, gentle reader, Loki is the bad guy! This was all orchestrated by Loki in order to regain the power to alter reality he lost when he died, arranged for a reincarnated child version of himself to exist, then killed that child version and stole his body. 'Twas Loki who whispered in Billy's ear the idea to search for Teddy's mother without him realizing it. 'Twas Loki who made a deal with Mother to position her to catch Billy's attention and get a chance at his power (though the deal specified Mother could not reveal Loki's involvement and did NOT specify Loki could not interfere in Mother's plans once the initial spell was cast. So crafty.) Mother was nothing but a threat to bring the Young Avengers together, an excuse to bind Wiccan to Loki so the God of Mischief could benefit from their alliance. While driving Teddy away was part of Loki's plans, the surprise return of Kid Loki's BFF Leah of Hel in the mayfly dimensions was terrifying to Loki, twisting the knife on his guilty conscience over murdering his younger self and his fear of the Young Avengers discovering this. This context paragraph is brought to you by the Teller of Tales.) [Young Avengers (2nd series) #10]
Apart from the others, Hulkling was led into a trap by Leah, who got him back to New York so Mother could manifest and seize their reality again. Leah and Mother contacted the Young Avengers, threatening them to turn over Wiccan or else Hulkling would die and the evil doppelgangers from the mayfly dimensions would be unleashed from Mother's dimension to ravage theirs. Billy was prepared to kill himself again this time, but Loki lied and said he was lying before, and that Wiccan killing himself wouldn't solve anything. Instead, Loki convinced Wiccan to use his powers to summon an older body for Loki, one with presumably more power to go with his skills so that Loki could help against Mother. Wiccan succeeded in turning Loki from a precocious preteen into a hipster Viking god, but Loki didn't seem any more powerful as a result. The Young Avengers all thought Loki had tricked them again, getting his older body back with no benefit to the team, but even Loki seemed genuinely surprised as his lack of power. (It was genuine... right?) [Young Avengers (2nd series) #11]
Left with no other choice, the team prepared to confront Mother in Central Park, backed up by a small army of young heroes who could still see the invasion, even though the older heroes ignored it thanks to Mother's spell. Loki's final suggestion was for Wiccan to temporarily access the full power of the Demiurge for himself, magically aging himself to the level of power and maturity he would need to wield the Demiurge magics. Wiccan did become powerful enough to stalemate Mother as they raided her dimension, leaving the Young Avengers to face not-Patriot, Leah and her other allies to rescue Hulkling.
In a twist, Loki's warning about the whims of a reality-warper were spot on... just not for Wiccan. His younger body was missing most of its magic not because of his size or age, but because of his guilt. Loki's regret over what he did to Kid Loki and Leah caused his magic to manifest independently of him as the Leah he'd been seeing, his own subconscious working against him because he deep down thought he deserved it. By confessing what he had done to Kid Loki and to set up the Mother scenario, Loki extricated his guilt and regained his power, dispersing Leah and her “allies.” Teddy was free and reunited with Billy as he warred with Mother. They reaffirmed that their love was real and this gave Wiccan the confidence to claim the power of Demiurge. The Demiurge dispersed Mother completely and drew the mayfly doppelgangers back into Mother's dimension and away from theirs. Possessing all the power of time and space, of magic forwards and backwards in time, Billy Kaplan could have done anything in that moment. And what he chose to do was give up his extra power until he knew he was ready to wield it. [Young Avengers (2nd series) #12-13]
At the after party, Billy and Teddy renewed their feelings for one another, confident that they were as real as anything. The not-Patriot returned Speed, completely unharmed, his mysterious agenda a problem to address some other time. Loki left of his own accord before he could talk the others into forgiving him, a secret relief to both sides. Throughout all this, Wiccan had gained greater control over his powers, greater knowledge of his destiny and greater confidence in his role as a super-hero. And so, Wiccan and the Young Avengers were prepared to face whatever came next. [Young Avengers (2nd series) #14-15]
