Avengers Idea Mechanics were put in a tough position when Rick Jones contacted them, requesting help. He was being hunted by S.H.I.E.L.D. in his new identity as a vigilante hacker, the Whisperer, after uncovering secret experiments involving the Cosmic Cube. If A.I.M. helped Rick, they would be violating their agreement against operating on U.S. soil, and would be declared terrorists. Roberto called for a vote, and Doreen, Hulkling and Wiccan voted against fighting S.H.I.E.L.D. To protect them from the consequences of A.I.M.’s actions, Roberto knocked out the three heroes and portaled them to a barren desert. He told them to contact S.H.I.E.L.D. and be fully upfront about everything they knew to avoid being lumped in with A.I.M. If A.I.M. was going bad again, he said, it was up to them to continue on as the new Avengers. [New Avengers (4th series) #8]

Doreen joined Wiccan, Hulkling and Hawkeye in staying together as the all-new New Avengers. [New Avengers (4th series) #11, Civil War II #1] Still, they were ready to respond when Roberto called. Squirrel Girl and the others joined up with A.I.M. to defend them from W.H.I.S.P.E.R. and rogue agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Faced with the Maker and his new Revengers, Squirrel Girl and Tippy-Toe helped defeat Vermin by convincing his rat army to go on strike for better benefits. To help smooth over their relationship with S.H.I.E.L.D., Roberto organized a worldwide takedown targeting all the outstanding A.I.M. splinter factions who had remained terrorists like A.G.M., R.A.I.D. and others. Sunspot’s A.I.M. then joined S.H.I.E.L.D. as a special scientific response branch. Several members left as this new era began, but Squirrel Girl was eager to be a part of the new A.I.M. and their U.S. Avengers. [New Avengers (4th series) #15-18]

Doreen had been harboring a crush on Tomas for nearly a year, and she was crushed when he finally moved on and started dating Mary instead of asking her out. Nancy, Tippy and Ken talked Doreen into joined a few dating sites (both as Doreen and as Squirrel Girl) to try and find someone she was compatible with. Cue awkward dating montage. She was on a date with Brad the HawkJock, a super-hero truther, when Mole Man attacked the street fair. When Squirrel Girl put Kraven the Hunter on a new path, he started hunting Mole Monsters in Subterranea, meddling in Mole Man’s affairs. Once Doreen understood Mole Man’s genuine (if misguided) grievance, she apologized for the harm she had caused him.

Mole Man was caught off-guard by Squirrel Girl’s empathy and understanding nature. He quickly became smitten with her and tried to propose marriage. Doreen tried to let him down easy by pointing out there were no squirrels underground, which only led Mole Man to drop all of Central Park into a sinkhole. Doreen rejected him more firmly this time, but Mole Man decided her friends were poisoning her against him and sent his Moloids against Nancy and Koi Boi. They drove Mole Man back underground, but next he sunk to blackmail and stole five of the surface’s greatest landmarks before announcing to the world he would only return them once Squirrel Girl went on a date with him. Doreen burrowed down into Subterranea to confront Mole Man directly, but was surprised to learn one of the Mole Monsters, Tricephalous, had her own feelings for Mole Man. Seeing an out, Squirrel Girl allowed herself to be defeated by the jealous Tricephalous, as the fickle Mole Man quickly switched his affection to the winner. Afterwards, Mole Man agreed to leave Squirrel Girl be and returned the various buildings to their rightful places. [Unbeatable Squirrel Girl (2nd series) #8-10]

One day, Tony Stark invited Squirrel Girl and her friends to see an unusual device he had appropriated from the High Evolutionary. When the Evolutionary’s troopers arrived to take the device back, a battle broke out and Squirrel Girl ended up being knocked into the machine. What soon emerged was two, two Unbeatable Squirrel Girls for the price of one! Doreen had been cloned by the device, creating what seemed like a perfect copy of her in every way. Taking Doreen’s middle name, “Allene” Green became a second Squirrel Girl fighting evil and studying Computer Sciences alongside her (their?) friends. Fortunately, there was no possible way this could go horribly wrong.

The invention of two Squirrel Girls made Allene start thinking about the concept of efficiency. She and Doreen met with Nancy, Tomas, Ken and Tippy about the possibility of a Squirrel Avengers Initiative, using pseudocode to display the benefits of using squirrels more proactively to prevent crime and harm to human society: environmental protection, public health, waste disposal, humanitarian aid, etc. As they were walking home from their discussion, though, they came across the body of Chompsky, a member of the Squirrel Scouts who had tragically been hit by a car while crossing the road. Allene was more deeply affected by the unfairness of Chompsky’s death than Doreen, and she fled the group to work out her feelings. Doreen was concerned, not only about Allene’s feelings, but also because her clone reacted so differently than she did to the same situation.

A few days later, Doreen and the others tracked down Allene and found she had reworked the Squirrel Avengers Initiative. Chompsky’s death had convinced her that squirrels were preferable as the dominant species on the planet. Allene had been duplicated with one fatal flaw: she lacked the ability to compromise. While Doreen was willing to look for solutions to make everyone happy, Allene would never think to back down from her convictions when she knew she was right. Expecting resistance, Allene had liberated the Evolutionary’s duplication machine and started spurting out cloned squirrels who would see things her way. Doreen and Tippy escaped and alerted Iron Man that the new Squirrel Girl was a dangerous jerk.

Tony brought out the Avengers to deal with Allene, but she intercepted his texts and posed as Doreen when the Avengers Assembled. With Doreen diverted on a wild goose chase, Allene incapacitated several of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. She liberated Cap’s shield, Ant-Man’s Pym Particles, Hawkeye’s arrows, Iron Man’s gauntlet and Black Widow’s bracelets (although she still couldn’t budge Thor’s hammer, dangit). The Squirrel Revengers Initiative kicked into high gear as Allene stole Negative Zone transporter discs from the Baxter Building to exile super-powered threats from Earth, while also directing her squirrel army to shut down the electrical grid across the entire continent by disabling power lines. Allene then crafted a logical tech tree to use her borrowed super-hero equipment to eliminate more superhumans, borrow their advantages to take on even more superhumans, and so on. In a matter of hours, Allene had taken down the rest of the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men and a wide assortment of heroes and villains.

Doreen and her pals tried to cooperate with S.H.I.E.L.D., but Allene had leveled up too much and drove them off after banishing the Helicarrier to the Negative Zone as well. Allene was too unbeatable, striking down the last of Doreen’s allies such as Chipmunk Hunk, Koi Boi, Agent Venom, Kraven, Hippo and even Nancy. Doreen managed to get behind Allene’s guard, and the clone tried again to convince Doreen and Tippy-Toe to see things her way, conquering the world for the greater good. They refused and so Allene rewired one of her teleporters and threatened to send Tippy to the airless moon if Doreen didn’t relent. It was meant to be a bluff, but Doreen called her on it and lunged at Allene, setting off the device.

Precious seconds ticked by as Doreen suffocated on the moon. Allene explained to Tippy-Toe that it was an accident and the transporter was hardwired for the moon, unable to retrieve anybody once they were gone. Tippy-Toe stole the transporter disc and piloted the Iron Man gauntlet, racing back to the warehouse where Allene first defeated the Avengers. Where the hammer of Thor still waited for somebody worthy to lift it again. Unable to waste time braking, Tippy’s neck snapped and her spine broke on impact as she triggered the transporter while dropping it onto the hammer. Mjolnir arrived on the airless moon and fell into the cold, still grasp of the dying Doreen.

And then…

and then…
