Moon Knight re-entered New York City with a flair. He saved lives and punished criminals with style, earning appreciation from the public as he did it without maiming or mutilating anyone. Jake reconnected with Samuels and Crawley, and Marlene was turned on by his new, clearer outlook. Jean-Paul had fallen on hard times after Rob's beating, but piloting for Moon Knight made him feel alive again. The money from Mexico went towards the Tinkerer's services, imagining a new form of Carbonadium armor and many new weapons for Moon Knight. Khonshu still whispered in Moon Knight's ear, but it was small, annoying, and ultimately ignorable voice.

Norman Osborn was uneasy with Moon Knight's new success, and reconnected with the Profile to break him. With the help of Osborn's ally, the Hood, Profile orchestrated the resurrection of Raoul Bushman, the one man who could throw off Marc Spector's mental wellbeing. Bushman and Scarecrow broke into Ravencroft Asylum to free the inmates as an army of violent psychotics to oppose Moon Knight. Seeing Bushman again did trouble Marc, throwing him off his game as he fought Scarecrow and the escapees. Moon Knight tracked Bushman around New York, finding him at an Oscorp facility by the docks. The two men fought as ruthlessly as ever before but, in the end, Moon Knight got the upper hand. Bushman was pinned in place while Moon Knight prepared to finish him with a crescent dart, and Khonshu egging him on to kill again in his name. In the final moment, though, Raoul begged Marc not to take his face again. Moon Knight stood down, refusing to kill his former brother-in-arms and greatest foe this time. [Vengeance of the Moon Knight #1-6]

Moon Knight struggled to maintain his morality and stance against killing. He caught Deadpool trying to kill a man on life support in a hospital, but learned it was more than it appeared. Herman Goncherenko was a Ukrainian mobster who had carried out atrocities at home and abroad in America. Although Herman had terminal colon cancer now, Deadpool had been hired by a woman whose husband and daughter were murdered when they refused to vacate their house in a real estate deal. She wanted Goncherenko killed, not just dead. Moon Knight looked into Goncherenko's organization, rescued a kidnapped child and beat up on Deadpool, enjoying the chance to unload on an unkillable opponent. However, when the client took it upon herself to enter the mobster's hospital room and inject poison into his I.V., Moon Knight remained outside and did not stand in the way of vengeance. [Vengeance of the Moon Knight #7-8]

Jake Lockley's new leaf caught the attention of some interesting parties. Steve Rogers saw the way Moon Knight was trying to better himself, and offered him a second chance. Rogers had replaced Norman Osborn as America's top cop, and he recruited Moon Knight to be a member of his Secret Avengers, a covert ops branch of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. [Vengeance of the Moon Knight #9-10, Secret Avengers (1st series) #1] Moon Knight was deployed with the Avengers on numerous engagements, many of them centering around a secret organization known as the Shadow Council. Moon Knight started off fighting the Council on Mars as they tried to recover the Serpent Crown, and later on he infiltrated the Shadow Council's men to prevent Shang-Chi's illustrious father from being fully resurrected. Moon Knight's life appeared to be firing on all cylinders. He was respected by the public and had renewed his status with the Avengers. His mind was stabile and clear, Khonshu's buzzing in his ear was at an all-time low and he had reconnected with all his friends and compatriots. He moved back into a mansion on Long Island and Marlene moved back in with him. She even announced she was pregnant with his child, and would have proposed marriage to him if she knew which personality she liked best. Sane, needed and loved, everything seemed to be going well for the man called Jake Lockley. Unfortunately, the balance in Moon Knight's life was about to be upset, drastically.

Daredevil had recently begun making drastic moves, such as taking over the Hand ninja cult as a "force for good" and constructing a fortress called Shadowland in the middle of Hell's Kitchen. Steve Rogers wanted Moon Knight to infiltrate Shadowland and get the lay of the land for him. At the same time, Daredevil hired the Profile to act against Moon Knight in his name. Profile located Randall Spector (somehow alive and living a new life) and manipulated him into once again assuming the mantle of Shadow Knight and declaring himself rival avatar of Khonshu. Jake Lockley vandalized his own cab in Hell's Kitchen, getting the attention of Daredevil's ninjas to lock him up with their other prisoners in Shadowland. While he was occupied, however, Shadow Knight broke into Spector Mansion and assaulted Marlene.

Lockley escaped the cells when a group of super-heroes led by Luke Cage confronted Daredevil about his actions. During the fight, the Beast of the Hand who was corrupting Daredevil attempted to reach out and claim Moon Knight, but Khonshu warded off the demon. Khonshu warned Moon Knight that, by rejecting him, he had left a hole in his soul that could be filled by another force. Khonshu offered to help Moon Knight find a mystical weapon called the Sapphire Crescent which could be used against the Beast, if he only became Khonshu's avatar again. Moon Knight refused, but returned home to discover Shadow Knight's handiwork, and Marlene had lost the baby. Moon Knight was ready to take Khonshu's help in exchange for vengeance, but got another lead first before the bargain was struck.

On the streets of New York, Moon Knight fought Shadow Knight and learned Randall's identity. When he realized Rand was also searching for the Sapphire Crescent, Moon Knight relented and sought Khonshu's guidance in exchange for his service. The Sapphire Crescent was recovered in New Orleans as Moon Knight and Shadow Knight fought over it. Rand was zealously devoted to serving his image of Khonshu, and rigged himself with a suicide bomber's vest to explode in the crowd. Moon Knight was forced to kill Shadow Knight with the Sapphire Crescent, losing the weapon and his brother in the process. Jake Lockley had gone to New Orleans, but it was Marc Spector who returned to New York. He announced his identity change to Marlene and unveiled the statue of Khonshu which had been in storage since the death of Black Spectre. [Shadowland #1-5, Shadowland: Moon Knight #1-3]

[Note: When Randall Spector died in Marc Spector: Moon Knight #38, his body broke down during the attempted autopsy, suggesting the corpse was a construct and not really Rand. In #58-60, an aborted subplot heavily implied that Nightshadow, one of Seth Phalkon's Hellbent-Prime enforcers, was a masked Rand who discovered his heritage like Marc. The Shadowland series ignored any explicit reference to previous Randall Spector stories as Hatchet-Man, Nightshadow or the previous Shadowknight. No explanation was made for his return from the dead.]

Moon Knight's reclamation of his identity as Marc Spector seemed to be a turning point in his life. He abandoned (or was abandoned by) his support system, parting ways with Marlene, Jean-Paul, Crawley, Samuels, Gena, Ray and so on. The circumstances of their departures were never fully disclosed. Moon Knight continued working with Rogers and his Secret Avengers for a time, operating largely against the many arms of the Shadow Council. [Secret Avengers (1st series) #16-21]
