However, the time came when Marc apparently stopped working directly with the Avengers. Instead, Marc moved out west to Hollywood where he became the creator and executive producer of Legends of the Khonshu, a weekly television series loosely based on his own experiences. The television show was largely a cover for Marc's real focus: diving into the criminal underworld of California in order to confirm the existence of a new "Kingpin of Los Angeles." He contracted a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Buck Lime to be technical consultant on Legends while also keeping him in crime-fighting tech off the books.

When asked, Marc reported this mission was assigned to him by Steve Rogers as part of the Secret Avengers. However, Marc's ability to know that for sure is questionable. Moon Knight's Avengers membership seemed to have gone to his head. Literally. Marc now perceived the ghostly apparitions of Captain America, Spider-Man and Wolverine providing him guidance and direction in his mission. Cap provided laser-focused tactical assessment, Logan was overly aggressive and Spidey was flippant and concerned about Marc enjoying himself while he worked. Sometimes, one of his personalities would even take the wheel and control Marc's body. Although Marc was usually aware these voices weren't the real Avengers, he leaned into the idea in order to draw upon their experience. He even asked Buck to create versions of Wolverine's retractable claws, Spider-Man's web-shooters and Captain America's photonic shield for him to use in the field when one of his other personas took over.

Moon Knight surveyed a meet between Mister Hyde and some local goons to exchange money for an unknown prize. After interrupting the proceedings, Marc discovered a deactivated Ultron on Hyde's boat, with its head severed from its body. During his fight with Hyde, the boat was lifted out of the water by an unknown force. The buyer had arrived to claim the Ultron from Hyde and Moon Knight only barely managed to escape the super-powered kingpin with the robot's head.

While Marc and Buck considered what to do with their own Ultron head, Moon Knight delved deeper into the criminal underworld. He discovered a strip club that was supposedly a front for the kingpin's operations, and decided to investigate it while posed as Spider-Man. The kingpin's lieutenant, Snapdragon, was a skilled martial artist and fought against Marc even as he switched between his Spider-Man and Wolverine personas. One of the guards shot him during the fight, and Marc would have been captured if one of the strippers didn't save him and help him get to freedom. Maya Lopez was a former Avenger named Echo who was performing her own investigation in California. She blew her cover in order to help Moon Knight escape from Snapdragon. Marc and Maya were attracted to one another, but Marc's erratic behavior also made Maya leery of him. Still, he reached out and assured her he was on a mission from Captain America and would welcome her help. They made plans to get together and exchange notes, but were attacked at the restaurant by the Night Shift, crooks hired by Snapdragon to eliminate them. Moon Knight and Echo defeated the Night Shift but drew the attention of the LAPD as well. Not as familiar with super-heroes as the NYPD, the police tried to arrest the Avengers, forcing them to run. While hiding in an alleyway, Marc misread the signals and kissed Maya, prompting her to punch his lights out. Maya came by Marc's place the next day to partially apologize, telling him to keep it professional if they continued working together. On top of it all, the real Captain America and the Avengers stopped in for answers on Marc's investigation. Moon Knight insisted that he and Echo were on top of the Kingpin of Los Angeles, and asked the Avengers to leave it to them. [Moon Knight (6th series) #4-6]

Marc had Buck approach Snapdragon, claiming to have the Ultron head and ready to sell it in order to get away from Moon Knight's craziness. He insisted he would only work directly with the boss, prompting Count Nefaria to step out of the shadows and deal with him. Nefaria suspected a trap and he crushed the fake Ultron head Buck provided to him. This WAS the trap, however, for it released a chemical mist when destroyed that temporarily disabled Nefaria's powers. He was caught on tape by Echo as active in the criminal underworld, outting him as the secret kingpin, and was forced to flee and leave Snapdragon captured by the heroes. After dropping off Snapdragon with the LAPD, Moon Knight and Echo continued putting the pressure on the criminal underworld. Their efforts drew out Count Nefaria again, who was prepared to confront them this time. Instead of killing them quickly, Nefaria felt it necessary to make an example of them, for he could not be seen as weak in front of his future business associates. Marc desperately tried to stay ahead of a Thor-level villain, switching between his Captain America, Wolverine and Spider-Man personas and tactics. He got in too close, though, and when Moon Knight was momentarily battered aside by Nefaria, the count focused on Echo and fired his ionic laser vision, burning through her chest and killing her. [Moon Knight (6th series) #8-9]

Raging fury aside, Moon Knight barely survived Count Nefaria's follow up attack. Somehow, he stabbed Nefaria with his Wolverine claws just as Nefaria unleashed his ionic power, causing it to backfire and injure the count. Marc was thrown for a loop and had to escape police custody at the hospital before returning to Buck. In the meanwhile, Nefaria's daughter Madame Masque had tracked Buck Lime down and stolen the Ultron head. Marc was now seeing Echo as one of the ghosts in his head, and she encouraged him to get back on his feet and finish what he had started. Moon Knight pulled himself together and went after Madame Masque, reclaiming the head. [Moon Knight (6th series) #10-11]

When Count Nefaria turned up at the LAPD station, Moon Knight arrived to confront him. He held his own against the vastly more powerful foe until the Avengers arrived at his emergency summons. Nefaria was defeated and taken into custody, while the Ultron head was turned over to Tony Stark for research and safekeeping. Legends of the Khonshu flopped, in part due to Marc's absentee role as producer. Moon Knight decided he had had enough of Los Angeles, and made plans to leave and presumably return to New York.
