Marlene's brother Peter Alraune was attacked by one of his patients, leading Moon Knight to get involved. Robert Markham had been transformed by drugs into Morpheus, the man without sleep, who harnessed the psychic energy normally released during sleep as aggressive ebon energy. After several fights trying to protect Alraune from Morpheus, Moon Knight succeeded in electrifying the super-villain, temporarily neutralizing his powers. Morpheus was sent to a prison hospital and kept in a chemically-induced sleep every night, to prevent him from building up an ebon charge again. [Moon Knight (1st series) #12]
Over the next few months, Moon Knight had his first encounters with Daredevil, the Man Without Fear, and the haunted Stained Glass Scarlet. Scarlet Fasinera had left the nunnery to marry and save the soul of a Mafia capo. She failed to keep her husband from returning to a life of crime, though, and failed to keep her son from following in his footsteps. Moon Knight crossed paths with Joe "Mad Dog" Fasinera when he went on a crime spree the day of his release from prison, and met Scarlet at the church where her husband had hidden the money from one of his last jobs. Mother crossed son, and Stained Glass Scarlet shot and killed Mad Dog while protecting Moon Knight and herself. [Moon Knight (1st series) #13-14]
Marc Spector's old friend Benjamin Abramov came to Grant Mansion for aid against the Third World Army, a group of radical terrorists led by the militant madman Nimrod Strange. Ben was shot and killed by Strange's lieutenant Master-Sniper, provoking Marc's involvement. Spector, Marlene and Frenchie got a coded microdot to Ben's Mossad contact Strelgov. This information allowed them to locate and infiltrate the Third World Army's island base. Strange, now calling himself Arsenal, intended to blow up the major bridges and tunnels of Manhattan to isolate the city behind a wall of fire. The island base was destroyed, but Arsenal escaped and proceeded with his plan for Manhattan. With the help of Strelgov, Moon Knight boarded the command ship Arsenal intended to use to launch the attack. The terror plot was foiled, Arsenal blew himself up in a mad last act and Abramov was avenged. [Moon Knight (1st series) #17-20]
Peter Alraune returned to Marlene's life, troubled by restless sleep that he traced back to Morpheus. The nighttime killer's powers had advanced during his recuperation, allowing him to possess sleeping minds and induce waking dream states in others. Spector tried to protect Alraune while at the same time defending himself when Peter became Morpheus's pawn. Moon Knight, Peter, Marlene and Frenchie fled to a Grant lodge in Maine, but Morpheus tracked them through Peter and physically arrived to confront his victims. Moon Knight managed to temporarily neutralize Morpheus, but Peter felt responsible for his actions and the actions his former patient had taken. As Morpheus's first possessed pawn, Peter somehow carried within him a version of Markham's powers that inhibited Morpheus's abilities when they touched. Before anyone could stop him, Peter grappled with Morpheus and held on, seemingly removing Morpheus's powers for good but also ending Peter Alraune's life in the process. Marlene was forced to cope with the death of her brother. [Moon Knight (1st series) #22-23]
Stained Glass Scarlet returned with a vengeance, intent on killing "Candyman" Manny Sindone and the mob bosses who encouraged her husband and son in the lifestyle that led to their graves. Moon Knight was troubled by Scarlet's killings, as he had tried to put murder in the past with his Marc Spector identity. Scarlet challenged him to admit whether he really wanted to stop her, though. In the end, Moon Knight stayed true to his new path as a hero and fought to prevent Stained Glass Scarlet from killing or being killed in pursuit of her vendetta. Still, when it came to a three-way standoff between Moon Knight, Scarlet and Sindone (eerily reminiscent of the vigilantes' previous encounter with Scarlet's son Mad Dog), Moon Knight struck to disarm Sindone, leaving Scarlet free to shoot him dead. Stained Glass Scarlet fled with Moon Knight doing little to stop her, and his attention on Scarlet left him oblivious to Marlene's growing distance and depression over her brother's death. While chasing a thug over the rooftops of a New York summer, Moon Knight and the crook grappled and fell into an open water tower. Woozy from a grazing bullet and with his cowl mike broken, Marc found himself trapped in the empty tower with the temperature climbing past 130 degrees. Unable to find him, Marlene and Frenchie went to Heroes for Hire to locate Marc for them. Moon Knight barely survived the heat and the rush of water being pumped into the tower during his ordeal, but he did make the acquaintance of Luke Cage and Iron Fist as they fought to rescue him. Moon Knight's next case involved a war veteran named Carson Knowles, who returned to a broken home and a lost career. Under pressure, he finally cracked and conceived a plan to bring down the city that "betrayed" him. Knowles ran for mayor on his father's political connections and his own war record, while working a second identity as Black Spectre and his Ghosts using strongarm tactics to build Knowles' base. Moon Knight got involved but was bested in a fight with Black Spectre, although he ripped the villain's mask enough to recognize Knowles underneath.
No one was willing to believe Moon Knight about Knowles, however. Corruption in the police force allowed Knowles to turn the authorities against Moon Knight when he went public with his accusations. Even Marlene doubted Marc, having grown disenchanted with their life after Peter's death. This led to Moon Knight questioning his own sanity, putting his naturally precarious mental health in jeopardy. He begged Marlene to do one last mission for him before leaving him, sending her to infiltrate Knowles' campaign. Moon Knight eventually succeeded in drawing out Knowles as Black Spectre and defeated him, unmasking Knowles to the public. Marlene found evidence of Knowles' shady dealings and plans to intentionally mismanage and dismantle New York City's infrastructure once he was mayor, allowing the police to arrest the candidate. Marc and Marlene reunited and planned to put work into repairing their relationship. [Moon Knight (1st series) #25]
Moon Knight continued to struggle with his different identities, however. A series of cop killings claimed the life of an informant and friend mere minutes after talking to Lockley. The investigation initially suggested a dirty cop working for Kingpin was doing the killings, but it turned out the victims were all on the take instead. An honest cop had begun killing his fellow officers because he knew they were corrupt, and Spector, Lockley, Grant and Moon Knight couldn't agree on how to address the situation. Moon Knight eventually stepped in to save the killer from a trap set by his last victim, but turned him over to the police as well. [Moon Knight (1st series) #27]
Marlene was offered a visit to the Sudan in order to lecture on the Seti Tomb she and her father unearthed years earlier, where the statue of Khonshu was found. Steven Grant accompanied her only for Marlene to be kidnapped by the Sons of the Jackal, thieves who posed as legitimate authorities to lure her there and use her knowledge to raid the tomb. Moon Knight traced Marlene and the Jackals to the tomb and was forced to reconsider whether he believed Khonshu was real or not. After the confrontation with Midnight Man and Bushman, Spector seemed willingly to accept Khonshu was only a metaphorical influence on his life. When he prayed to Khonshu for help saving Marlene in the tomb, however, divine assistance seemed to come at the necessary moment. Or perhaps it really was just the wind. Moon Knight reconnected with Jack Russell when the Werewolf by Night was being chased by a Satanic cult, who intended to use him as a symbolic beast of the apocalypse for their followers. During the day, Marlene used hypnotic techniques to reach Jack's subconscious werewolf, teaching him to tie Moon Knight to the moon, which gives him his power. Because of this, Spector was able to fight alongside the Werewolf against the cultists without fear of Jack's feral side turning on him as well. Moon Knight and the Werewolf would never be friends, but they developed a grudging respect as fellow travelers under the moon. [Moon Knight (1st series) #29-30]
New York began to suffer under increasing gang violence, and the threat struck close to home for Moon Knight on several missions. A chemical plant owned by Steven Grant went under and was never properly cleared out by the EPA. Toxins from a super-soldier style experiment Marc Spector once provided security for were found in the dilapidated warehouse by street kids who thought to make themselves strong, only to go berserk. Gena was attacked at her diner twice by a gang kid she had helped raise, and it tarnished the business she had built for herself. Gena soon decided to move out west to Houston with her boys in order to help her brother with his restaurant, starting a new life away from Jake Lockley and Moon Knight. Moon Knight's adventures connected him with street-level crimes more than super-criminals, a lack of experience that highlighted itself when he caught Spider-Man's foe the Human Fly in the midst of a burglary. The Fly's 360 degree vision, wall-crawling and ultrasonic wings kept Moon Knight off balance, and he was struck against a wall with enough force to cause a spinal injury. Marc Spector was paralyzed by the blow and confined to a wheelchair. Marc struggled to regain his confidence and his ability to walk in the weeks that followed. He considered giving up his mission of justice and retiring with Marlene just as Steven Grant. After seeing a mutant criminal named Bora attack and kill a man in front of him, Marc saw how much Moon Knight was still needed, and he found the fortitude to push past his injuries, regain the use of his legs and bring Bora to justice. [Moon Knight (1st series) #35]
Moon Knight had struggled to rely upon his own inner strength after the apparent destruction of Khonshu's statue had shown him he relied too much on his "god's" grace. His efforts to look past the supernatural were challenged when the soul of a cursed Egyptian necromancer arose from a necklace and possessed Marlene. Doctor Strange forced Marc to accept that Khonshu was real and that he personally carried within him the spirit of a long dead Khonshu priest, and nemesis of Amutef the necromancer. As Strange cast the ritual, Moon Knight's second soul rose up to battle Amutef on the spiritual plane for Marlene's life. The necromancer was banished, but Marc had to confront the otherwordly nature of his resurrection and connection to Khonshu once more. [Moon Knight (1st series) #36]
One day, word reached Marc Spector's answering service at Grant Mansion that his father was on his deathbed and was asking for him. Eighteen years of silence wasn't easily overcome, and Steven Grant was reluctant to reopen Marc Spector's past. Despite her distaste for "Marc Spector," Marlene encouraged Steven to make amends with his father. He changed his mind too late, however, and arrived in Chicago only in time for Elias Spector's funeral. Elias's protege Reuben Davis had embraced the occult aspect of the Kabbalah, crafting an identity for himself as Zohar. Zohar desecrated Elias' grave and planned to use Jewish mysticism to revive his mentor's body and learn what he had seen on the other side of the great beyond. Zohar was defeated by Moon Knight but not before his spell was cast, and Marc Spector faced the reanimated body of his own father. Unwilling to strike his father again, even in death, Marc only survived thanks to Marlene's intervention, ending the enchantment. [Moon Knight (1st series) #37-38]
