Feeling down, Gwenpool engaged in some gratuitous cameos, hoping that would make her feel better. During Civil War II, Gwenpool tried to avoid being a D-List casualty of the crossover and took a mercenary job down in Georgia where she met Tree and Squirrel. [Rocket Raccoon and Groot #8-10] She also took to heart the broadcast by the new youth team the Champions that anyone could be a member who wanted to make a difference in the world. She stitched a 'C' on her costume and tried to hook up with the group (fortunately, for her sake, when Miles Morales was not in attendance). Ms. Marvel and the Champions' attempt to deal with real world problems affecting society clashed with Gwen's comic book logic, however. A small town, Southern sheriff antagonizing immigrants and the non-white races in his county was not being influenced by Hate-Monger or the Sons of the Serpent, leaving Gwenpool bored and confused about how to help, so she quit. [Champions (2nd series) #4-5]

M.O.D.O.K. was running out of money without paying jobs, so Gwenpool rescheduled her meeting with their benefactor. Surprisingly, he turned out to be a rich but shockingly normal-seeming man named Vincent Doonan. Vincent appreciated the "peace of the mundane,” and was irritated by the constant super-battles that threatened the Earth, New York and his small community of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn in particular. He funded M.O.D.O.K. in part because the top agents were all non-powered individuals making use of their own skills, and in fact preferred working with them over the absurd M.O.D.O.K. (the dude this time!). The Teuthidians had returned to Earth to seek revenge on Gwenpool, and so Mr. Doonan wanted M.O.D.O.K. to eliminate them to maintain his peaceful life.

Gwenpool found it convenient that she was being paid to save her own skin, but complications arose when the Teuthidians allied themselves with the NYPD. Gwen was still wanted for escaping custody after Spider-Man turned her in, and her mugshot meant she was a target both in and out of her mask. Gwenpool convinced M.O.D.O.K. she could stage a big spectacle in Times Square to draw out the Teuthidians while Batroc and the others created distractions around town to distract the NYPD. Once she got into the field, though, Gwen saw her distraction wasn't happening. Mr. Doonan appeared and told Gwenpool that HE had warned the Teuthidians and captured her crew from M.O.D.O.K. Gwen's plan was exactly the sort of high stakes super-battle that Doonan wanted to avoid causing, and so he decided to aid the Teuthidians in eliminating her as a quicker route to maintaining peace in his community. Gwen lashed out at Vinnie Doonan, only to reveal him as a renegade Doombot in disguise.

Mr. Doonan's counter-attack on Gwenpool really did draw out the NYPD this time, as they saw a Doombot causing massive property damage in the streets. Gwen exchanged pleasantries with an Officer Gray (establishing her as a reoccurring character and Chekov's cop for the narrative) before fleeing the scene. Back at the mobile base, Gwenpool and the ghostly Cecil tried to come up with a way to rescue the rest of M.O.D.O.K. from Bay Ridge. They were surprised to learn that the rest of M.O.D.O.K. wasn't captured, technically -- there was an entire army of Stormtrooper cannon fodder M.O.D.O.K. mercenaries in the base the whole time, which Gwen just hadn't bothered to notice before now. (Now I have an army with machine guns. Ho ho ho.)

Gwenpool warned Officer Gray to clear Bay Ridge of civilians before attacking Doonan and the Teuthidians with the M.O.D.O.K. mobile base. She also had Ronnie sew together new costumes for her mercenaries as the Poole Boys, even if it meant using all the pink fabric and giving up on finally getting a costume with the legs covered. The Poole Boys and mobile base did critical harm to the Teuthidians with minimum property damage, securing Gwen a better relationship with Officer Gray and the NYPD. Her actions also pushed Doonan into acting publicly to protect his community, outing him as a local "hero,” much to his chagrin. But, even after M.O.D.O.K. was rescued, Batroc declared it was time to split up. Their mercenary group had proven dangerous and non-profitable after losing their employer and major client. Cecil left as well, hoping to reconnect with his family in West Virginia, despite his ghost status. Regardless of her big victory, Gwenpool had to deal with the reality of her friends and supporting cast going their separate ways. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #7-10]

Gwen sulked for a time doing behind-the-scenes mercenary work, which was super-easy but also boring because of her genre-savvy skills. If she wasn't fighting a fictionally interesting villain or antagonist, Gwenpool could basically sleepwalk through merc jobs, and they started to lose their thrill. She took a job defending a small town from a crusading vampire, only to discover the vampire was the dhampir, Blade, and the small town was a community of reanimated corpses empowered by a necromancer. Crossing swords with Blade was terrifying, but pretty cool, and Gwenpool made a new contact for her friends list. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #11]

After taking another job, Gwenpool woke up in a dungeon stripped of her normal gear. She soon met Mega Tony, Batroc and the Terrible Eye in the catacombs as well, and learned they had all been kidnapped by a mysterious force. Gwen was quick to recognize the dungeon crawl genre of their situation, popular in video games and RPGs. When they found a store full of equipment, Gwenpool fulfilled the fantasy of Every. Gamer. Ever. and killed the merchant shopkeep (robot) mid-exposition to loot his store without paying for things. When the dungeon master appeared as a phantom projection to offer more exposition, Gwen called it: It's Arcade. You're Arcade. Found out, Arcade dropped the act but nevertheless challenged the mercenaries to quest through his latest Murderworld in the hopes of finding an exit. The "Unkillable Beast" at the center of the dungeon also proved to have a more mundane explanation: Deadpool. Did I say mundane? I meant terrifying. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #12]

You see, Gwen Poole didn't read Deadpool. Too meme-y. After getting over the initial shock, however, Gwenpool coordinated her team against the fighting-mad Deadpool by re-imagining it as a boss fight. Gwen's tactics as an MMORPG raid planner were superb, and the reunited M.O.D.O.K. managed to temporarily disable Deadpool. However, Gwen made the mistake of bragging that they won because it was "her book.” Realizing he was facing another breaker of the fourth wall, Deadpool re-envisioned the circumstances to his advantage. Instead of accepting that he was a guest star in Gwenpool's book, he called upon his own vast popularity like an aura of invincibility, rightly declaring that he could never be killed off by some D-Lister who debuted as a back-up feature in Howard the Duck of all books. Deadpool's kung-fu was stronger, and he completely wasted M.O.D.O.K. with his second wind. Before killing the utterly defeated Gwenpool, Deadpool acknowledged with resignation that in the end they were both just following the script. Having found common ground, Gwenpool and M.O.D.O.K. teamed up with Deadpool to defeat Arcade and escape from Murderworld.

Unhappy with how they had parted in Bay Ridge, Gwenpool decided to make a point of reconnecting with her friends from M.O.D.O.K. and helping them out. Mega Tony had been hurting for work since their group disbanded, so Gwen supported him at a job interview for Parker Industries, turning his healing tech towards rewarding work instead of mercenary jobs. Batroc and Sarah (the "Terrible EYE!") were fine, and so Gwen caught up with Cecil in West Virginia. His family had NOT been supportive of him being dead, and so Gwenpool and Cecil prepared a quest to help him with his ghost problems. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #13]

Cecil felt his afterlife would be better if he could become corporeal, and at least touch things while as a ghost. Gwen asked Sarah to prepare a spell that would help, and the Terrible Eye mystically located a vessel that might aid Cecil's plight. The scrying pool she had created in her bathtub could be used as a portal to bring them close to the vessel, so Gwen impulsively jumped in and Cecil followed. They found themselves in the trunk of Ghost Rider's Hell Charger, facing dwarves of Nidavellir in Los Angeles after they stole a meteor to forge as a mystical gem to transfer souls. Their plotting drew the attention of Kate Bishop after they stole the meteor, and the Spirit of Vengeance when they killed a security guard relieving the meteor from a museum. Comics, amirite?

Cecil's spirit was sucked up into the gem before the dwarves could complete their ceremony, and Ghost Rider took the gem and sped off. Gwenpool and Kate Bishop (the better Hawkeye) teamed up to locate Robbie Reyes, go after the dwarves and save Cecil. The dwarves had been intending to transplant one of their souls into an unstoppable dog-beast, and they released the mindless creature to crush the heroes once they caught up. Gwen retrieved the gem, and Cecil insisted she let him help in the fight. The gem was attached to the dog-beast's brow, and Cecil's consciousness was transferred into it. The dwarves fled with their scheme in tatters, and Cecil decided this body was an improvement over being a ghost.

With the last of her friends from M.O.D.O.K. satisfied, Gwen turned towards her own life. After noticing the mayor of New York in the Marvel Universe was the same as in her reality, Gwen started to wonder whether copies of other people she knew might be in the comic book realm, like her family. She finally put together the courage to go to her old house and find out. When she arrived, Gwen met her brother Teddy. HER brother, not a Teddy Poole, Jr. of Earth-616. He had survived the trek to the Marvel Universe with her, and he was not happy. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #14-15]

Teddy pulled Gwen through the door of their house and through a portal back in time, seemingly returning them to the day Gwen first left for the Marvel Universe. Gwen's memory regressed and she began reliving the events of her old life. She recalled the isolation when all her old friends moved away to college after she failed to graduate high school; her parents' strained support when she didn't even try to get a job or move out; her inability to even finish her fanfiction stories once they got started. After an argument with her parents, Gwen ran off to her "sleep study" and cranked the collective unconsciousness machine up to the max. She thought it was possible, through this machine, to enter the Marvel Universe and live her fantasies. This time, however, Teddy helped convince Gwen the portal it opened was too dangerous, and she shut down the machine rather than walking through to the comic book world.
