Captain Marvel returned to Earth a hero, not a soldier, and was reconnected with Rick Jones. With his mind and powers enhanced by Eon, Mar-Vell was ready for a rematch with Controller. As a man of peace, Captain Marvel initially tried to reason with the Controller, warning him that Thanos was a feckless master and would turn on him eventually. When it came time for battle, however, Mar-Vell demonstrated his new outlook on life had done nothing to inhibit his combat prowess. Captain Marvel fought the Controller until Thanos tired of their struggle. Having observed the affair from afar with the Cosmic Cube, Thanos fulfilled Mar-Vell's prediction and disposed of the Controller, he no longer being of use to the Mad Titan. Lou-Ann was freed and the immediate threat was over, but Captain Marvel knew the real war with Thanos over the Cosmic Cube was yet to come. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #30]

Seeking allies, Captain Marvel traveled to San Francisco and located the Titan priestess Moondragon, who also sought to defeat Thanos. [Daredevil (1st series) #107] They returned to Avengers Mansion to find Drax the Destroyer, another foe of Thanos, had arrived to offer his services. As Captain Marvel readied the Avengers to face the coming threat, Thanos teleported him to Titan again along with the Mad Titan's old foes Moondragon, Drax, and Iron Man. Along with Eros and Mentor, Thanos imprisoned his foes in bio-electric stasis fields, bragging about the invincibility offered by the Cosmic Cube and the vast space fleet of marauders speeding towards Earth at his command.

Mar-Vell managed to swap with Rick and shatter their stasis fields with the accompanying energy discharge. The heroes surprised Thanos and separated him from the Cosmic Cube. Now it was just six against the most powerful Eternal of Titan in history. Mentor even telepathically communicated with ISAAC, sabotaging Titan's internal gyros and sending the entire moon speeding uncontrollably through space. Despite their valiant efforts, Thanos disabled his opponents one-by-one before retrieving the Cosmic Cube and undoing all the damage they had caused. Thus began the Grand Transformation. Under the power of the Cosmic Cube, Thanos willed that he become one with the universe, making himself like onto a god. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #31]

A bodiless malevolent presence now, Thanos toyed with Captain Marvel and his allies as they ran through Titan seeking salvation. Captain Marvel had palmed the Cosmic Cube after Thanos tossed it aside, but the Cube seemed completely drained of power. Still, his cosmic awareness told Mar-Vell the secret to beat Thanos somehow lay in the Cube. Captain Marvel and Iron Man conversed with the ISAAC computer, but were unable to reason a means of defeating Thanos. Instead, Mar-Vell and Rick had ISAAC teleport them back to Earth for a better staging ground against Thanos. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #32]

They were unsuccessful. The vast space fleet was nothing but a ruse Thanos used to neutralize his opposition. The Avengers took to the skies and fought a stalwart defense of Earth in space before destroying or routing all of Thanos' ships. [Avengers (1st series) #125] However, in their absence, Thanos used his cosmic power to shift the Earth one second into a different space-time continuum. The returning Avengers found themselves out of synch with the rest of Earth when they returned, able to observe but unable to respond to Thanos' actions. Only the empathic Mantis was able to appear to Captain Marvel and alert him of their plight. Mar-Vell, ISAAC and Mantis continued to ruminate over the means of defeating Thanos.

Captain Marvel and Rick did recognize Thanos' ego as a weak point, and successfully taunted him into manifesting physically to confront them one-on-one instead of in his astral state. Unfortunately, the invincible Thanos trounced Mar-Vell in short order regardless. Finally, Captain Marvel honed his cosmic awareness and realized the Cosmic Cube was still actively serving as the source of Thanos' power. When he lost his physical form, Thanos deliberately cast it aside as if it were meaningless now, which couldn't be further from the truth. While the Cosmic Cube could not be activated, that was only because it was sustaining Thanos' current transformation. Realizing Mar-Vell was getting too close to the truth, Thanos resumed his astral barrage on the hero, assaulting his senses and concept of reality with the Cube's power. Nevertheless, Captain Marvel's cosmic awareness guided him through the onslaught and, as Thanos aged him to the point of death, Captain Marvel collapsed on the Cube with a focused blow that shattered the vessel. With the Cube destroyed, Thanos lost his cosmic power and was dispersed. The Avengers were restored and the threat of the Mad Titan was over. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #33]

Getting back to their everyday lives, Mar-Vell suggested Rick reacquaint himself with his erstwhile manager, Mordecai Boggs. Rick and his new singing partner Rachel "Dandy" Dandridge were scheduled to appear in Denver for a show. As the trio drove out west, however, they crossed paths with Nitro, agent of the Lunatic Legion, stealing Compound 13, a deadly nerve gas from Carol Danvers and the military. Rick unleashed Captain Marvel, who succeeded in defeated Nitro, but not before the gas canister was ruptured. Mar-Vell sealed the canister with his strength, but was exposed to the gas in the process. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #34]

Captain Marvel collapsed from the gas' exposure, while Rick was being accosted by Annihilus in the Negative Zone. When the three hour time limit was up, the two men switched back to their regular places, with Mar-Vell's dwindling health entering a stasis period due to the effects of the Negative Zone. Guided from afar by the Kree Supreme Intelligence, Rick used a newfound ability to possess and animate Captain Marvel's unconscious form in the Negative Zone to get him away from Annihilus. He then made contact with Carol Danvers to get a hold of a cure for the nerve gas, summoning Captain Marvel back to Earth so it could be administered. Another Lunatic Legion agent, the Living Laser, had attacked in the meantime, but Ant-Man and the Wasp had protected Rick while he was communing with Mar-Vell's body. Captain Marvel received the cure and, for the moment, it seemed as if he recovered from Compound 13 with no side effects. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #35]

Becoming curious about the Lunatic Legion, Mar-Vell convinced Rick to let him investigate a lead connecting them to the moon. Rick told Boggs and Dandy he would meet them in Denver in time for the show, and Dandy slipped him some "candy" in case he got bored on the road by himself. Because of the three hour time limit, Rick borrowed a space suit from the Avengers so that Captain Marvel could fly to the moon without worrying about changing back to Rick at an inopportune moment.  As Mar-Vell began to fly and Rick settled in for a long stay in the Negative Zone, he took the pill Dandy gave him and began to experience the drug's hallucinogenic effects. Their link caused Mar-Vell to be affected by Rick's bad trip as well, leaving him unprepared for combat with the Lunatic Legion and a surprisingly aggressive Watcher when he arrived on the Blue Area of the Moon. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #37]

The Lunatic Legion proved to be a group of Blue Kree racial zealots, led by former Imperial Minister Zarek and who were eager to execute a disgusting "Pink Kree" like Mar-Vell. As Rick's drugs wore off, however, Captain Marvel discovered the drug and his own cosmic awareness had combined to make his link to Rick more powerful than ever. Each of them now had full access to each other's minds, and Mar-Vell's Nega Bands could tap Rick's psychic energy as well, doubling his physical powers. They could trade places without tapping the Bands together, or even separate entirely if they chose to do so. Captain Marvel quickly dispatched the Lunatic Legion with his newfound power, and then accompanied Uatu to the Watcher homeworld, where Uatu faced charges of interference with other races. Despite the earlier attack, Mar-Vell spoke in Uatu's defense, and the Watcher ultimately received little more than a stern warning from his peers. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #38-39]

Closer than brothers, Mar-Vell and Rick still relished the idea of spending time apart now that they could. Once they returned to Earth, the two men separated. Captain Marvel intended to return to his people in the Kree Empire, and he traveled to the Cape to arrange transport and say good-bye to Carol Danvers. While there, however, he was confronted by a demonic parasite who had horrifically possessed the body of his first love, Una. Mar-Vell was forced to kill "Una" in order to protect Cape Canaveral. This only fueled his need to leave Earth and its bitter memories behind. Surprisingly, Rick wanted to come with him. Mordecai Boggs had promoted him as a "freak act" and Rick needed a break from Earth as well. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #40]

Captain Marvel and Rick traveled to Hala, letting Mar-Vell visit home and also warn the great Supreme Intelligence that Zarek was a potential threat to his rule once more. Racial hatred against the Pink Kree was worse than ever, and Mar-Vell had to skip Rick's tour of Hala and bring them directly to the Supreme Intelligence. The Intelligence already knew about the Lunatics and, in fact, the Legion was present in his chambers to attack Rick and Mar-Vell. While Captain Marvel quickly dispatched his foes, he was shocked to learn his entire life had been a puppet show with the Supreme Intelligence pulling the strings.

The Intelligence reminded his audience again how the Kree people had reached a point of evolutionary stagnation. In order to ensure the Kree survive and thrive, Supremor had taken efforts in the past to diversify the Kree genetic code. The Supreme Intelligence detailed all the events of Mar-Vell's life that had led up to this moment: the deliberate tension of arranging Mar-Vell, Una and Yon-Rogg be assigned to the same vessel, Mar-Vell's inevitable change of heart towards humanity, the manipulation of Ronan and Zarek as a "threat" to the Intelligence, the negation grenade and Mar-Vell's "unexpected" exile to the Negative Zone, leading to him bonding with Rick Jones through the Nega Bands and the ongoing witch's cauldron of their minds and genes, merging closer and closer together as time passed. All of this, the Supreme Intelligence said, was at its direction.

The Supreme Intelligence itself was an amalgamation of the minds of the most elite Kree warriors, generals and scientists of the ages, preserved in a planetary computer database. Because most of these minds were Blue Kree, the Intelligence feared its own stagnation as well as that of the Kree race. It intended to upgrade itself, assimilating the mind of Rick Jones into its collective consciousness. This would add the evolutionary potential of the Destiny Force to the Supreme Intelligence and was only possible because Rick had mingled with Mar-Vell so thoroughly at the Intelligence's guidance. The Intelligence claimed it created Captain Marvel to be its greatest opponent, a defender for Rick that would satisfy the Intelligence's Kree-driven need to conquer for a victory. Ronan was first summoned by the Supreme Intelligence to battle Mar-Vell and the Intelligence manipulated Captain Marvel and Rick Jones, separating them again but leaving each man with access to a single Nega Band. Playing a deeper game, the Supreme Intelligence then dismissed Captain Marvel and Rick through long-range teleportation, challenging them to fight their way back to him.
