Nearly broken with grief, Mar-Vell sought to return to the Helion and seek revenge on Yon-Rogg. The colonel was prepared for him and grabbed Mar-Vell's relatively primitive rocket in a tractor beam before hurling it out into the distance of space. Unable to arrest his momentum with the primitive Earth technology of the rocket, Mar-Vell was left adrift for weeks, surviving only due to the minimal rations and life support on board the rocket, facing inevitable death by starvation.

When all hope seemed lost and his mind on the verge of breaking due to delirium and hallucinations, Mar-Vell's rocket mysteriously touched down safely of its own accord on a distant and deserted planet. He stumbled out and found himself before a great monolith, which spoke to him in the disembodied voice of Zo. The great Zo revealed it had need of a man like Mar-Vell, and offered him great power in exchange for his service. The embittered Mar-Vell felt he had nothing left to live for, having lost his beloved and been branded a traitor to two races. Zo dangled the idea of revenge in front of Mar-Vell, however, and the disgraced captain recognized he could not rest so long as Yon-Rogg was still free. He accepted Zo's offer of power and the chance for revenge in exchange for a lifetime of service afterwards. Mar-Vell gained great physical strength and restored vigor, as well as the power to cast illusions and teleport through hyperspace. This strength was used to break the wrist monitor Yon-Rogg had planted on him, although his Uni-Beam was destroyed in the process as well. He was now Captain Marvel, agent of Zo and seeker of vengeance. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #11]

[Note: Mar-Vell's inability to breathe indefinitely in Earth's atmosphere was never mentioned again after his encounter with Zo. Presumably, his transformation altered him sufficiently to accept Earth or Kree atmospheres.]

Captain Marvel returned to Earth in search of Yon-Rogg, but became distracted by other matters. He learned that Walter Lawson had been declared AWOL in his absence, a person of interest in various investigations due to both the real Lawson's ties to the Organization and his own behavior as a Kree spy. Captain Marvel regained Carol Danvers' trust by protecting her and the Cape's latest rocket from a Man-Slayer robot. He entered the Helion to confront Yon-Rogg, but was forced to abandon his struggle with the mad colonel when the Man-Slayer reactivated and threatened Carol again. An encounter with Iron Man and the Puppet Master further delayed Mar-Vell, until he was recalled by Zo. The entity claimed Mar-Vell had exhausted the time given to him for his vengeance, and must now return to serve the needs of Zo. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #12-14]

Zo revealed that the quest he needed Mar-Vell to complete was the destruction of Kree-Lar itself. The mighty idol Tam-Bor, sacred shrine to a renegade cult of worshippers, had become a magnetic anomaly that threatened to draw the entire Kree galaxy together, destroying worlds. The destruction of Tam-Bor meant the destruction of Kree-Lar itself, for the world's magnetic axis was now linked to the idol. Mar-Vell at first rejected the idea of becoming a mass murderer, and questioned why an all-powerful being like Zo needed him in the first place. A displeased Zo sent Mar-Vell on a kaleidoscope-like journey through time and space, heaven and hell, impressing upon the Kreeman that Zo was wise beyond all knowledge, and should not be questioned. Nevertheless, Mar-Vell approached his mission with the secret hope that Kree-Lar could somehow be spared. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #15]

After arriving on Kree-Lar, Mar-Vell battled the Cult of Tam-Bor and discovered the idol was not an anomaly, but created in secret by modern technology hidden away inside the statue. He found himself battling Ronan the Accuser, who inexplicably seemed to be defending Tam-Bor. Their match came to an end with the arrival of the Super-Sentry, sacred guardian of the Supreme Intelligence, ruler of all the Kree. The Super-Sentry dispatched Ronan easily and teleported Mar-Vell to ancient Hala, birthplace of the Kree and site of the vast network of super-computers that coordinated the Supreme Intelligence.

The Supreme Intelligence revealed that most of what Mar-Vell had experienced in recent days had been a lie. Zo was not an all-powerful entity, but a smokescreen created by Imperial Minister Zarek for sedition. The blue Kree Zarek and Ronan objected to the Supreme Intelligence's policies that mixed the Kree genetic line with other species, producing the pink Kree subspecies like Mar-Vell. As part of their long range plans, Zarek and Ronan had deliberately stoked the animosity between Mar-Vell and Yon-Rogg, hoping to produce a situation exactly like what transpired. When Mar-Vell was weak of mind and body after his rocket voyage, they retrieved him and placed Mar-Vell in a multi-sensory illusion chamber that fed him the Zo scenario. With Captain Mar-Vell empowered and suitably in awe of their puppet, the conspirators intended to blame him (a pink Kree) for the destruction of Tam-Bor (another project of Zarek's) and use this political capital to remove the Supreme Intelligence from high office.

As these whirlwind revelations took root, Zarek attempted to escape with the help of Ronan, tossing out a negatron sphere to cover their exit. The heroic Mar-Vell threw himself on the grenade to protect the Supreme Intelligence, unaware that the high chambers were shielded against such explosions. As Mar-Vell and the Supreme Intelligence conversed, Mar-Vell defended the people of Earth and asked for leave to continue his quest to bring Yon-Rogg to justice. The Supreme Intelligence observed that the charges of Mar-Vell being Un-Kree were not wholly without merit, but recognized the heroism displayed by his officer. He bestowed Mar-Vell with a special uniform commemorating his bravery, but decreed that Mar-Vell would never advance beyond his present rank. He would forever be... Captain Marvel. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #16]

On his flight back to Earth through hyperspace, Mar-Vell was surprised when his atoms reversed polarity, becoming anti-matter as he plummeted uncontrollably into the Negative Zone. This was a lingering side effect of negatron sphere, which left him helpless in the void. With the assistance of the Supreme Intelligence, Mar-Vell reached out with his mind to Earth and located a hapless youth named Rick Jones. Recently the kid sidekick of Captain America, Rick had been harshly rebuked by the Red Skull in Cap's body denouncing the need for a new "Bucky." Using his illusion powers, Mar-Vell created a spectral image of Captain America before Rick, drawing his attention and guiding him to a long abandoned Kree outpost in the American desert.

Hearing Mar-Vell's voice from beyond, Rick Jones put a pair of ancient Kree Nega Bands on his wrist, creating a link to the Negative Zone. By striking the Nega Bands together, Rick traded places with Captain Marvel in the Negative Zone, bringing Mar-Vell back to Earth. The new partners found they could communicate with each other across the dimensional divide, sharing thoughts and feelings. Mar-Vell found himself radically changed -- his Zo-given powers were completely gone thanks to his ordeal, leaving him with the standard strength of a Kree. The Nega Bands were a suitable replacement, augmenting Mar-Vell with gifts of strength and flight greater than he had possessed in the past. The Nega Bands were not a cure for his affliction, though, for Mar-Vell's atoms were still composed of anti-matter. He could exist on Earth (and Rick in the Negative Zone) only due to a temporary protective barrier the Bands maintained around each of them. After three hours, Mar-Vell would automatically revert back to the Negative Zone, and Rick to Earth, as the barrier faltered. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #17]

[Note: Technically, it was never explicitly stated that Mar-Vell lost his Zo-powers at this time. However, there were no further example of his unique illusion or hyperspace teleportation powers afterwards. The latter power, in particular, could have been used by Captain Marvel on several occasions in the years to come, but it was not.]

Captain Marvel remained set on his quest for vengeance against Yon-Rogg, only to discover the evil colonel had kidnapped Carol Danvers in Mar-Vell's absence from Earth. Yon-Rogg doubled-back on Mar-Vell during his pursuit, returning to the same Kree outpost where Rick and Mar-Vell met. Unable to claim the Nega Bands as he intended, Yon-Rogg instead reactivated the Psyche-Magnitron, a device that could form technologies out of the air at the will of the user. Yon-Rogg set a killer Mandroid on Captain Marvel before the Magnitron itself was damaged, causing the robot to vanish. Mar-Vell came at Yon-Rogg with his fists, taking out all his frustrations for Una's death. His fury only grew when Yon-Rogg missed him with a stray laser blast, striking down Carol Danvers. When the final moment came, however, Mar-Vell found he could not kill a helpless Yon-Rogg after beating the colonel unconscious. The damage to the Magnitron reached critical mass and an explosion was imminent. Captain Marvel left Yon-Rogg to his fate and rushed the unconscious Carol out of the cave just as the Magnitron erupted. Yon-Rogg was consumed in the explosion and Mar-Vell's quest seemed to be at an end. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #18]

In the days that followed, Rick Jones and Mar-Vell attempted to adjust to their newfound "shared space." The Walter Lawson identity was unsalvageable, leaving Mar-Vell with no place on Earth to call his own. Rick was considering a career as a musician, thanks to an eager manager named Mordecai Boggs, but he also had no home or income of his own. A brief stay at Minos Towers revealed the landlord Cornelius Webb actually intended to torture the tenants in a bizarre social experiment. Rick was forced to summon Captain Marvel to deal with the attacks, leaving them without a place to live again by the end. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #19]

Rick wanted to establish his own way in life, and sought out Nick Fury for support due to their mutual friend, Captain America. When Rick uncovered the criminal Scorpio in Fury's apartment, he released Captain Marvel to confront the burglar. Scorpio escaped, however, and so Rick brought the mystery to the Avengers himself, keeping Mar-Vell's involvement a secret. Even when Rick and the Avengers were captured by the full roster of Zodiac, Rick was determined to prove himself independently of Mar-Vell. His sneak attack on the Zodiac leader Aries was key to the Avengers' victory, giving Rick the confidence boost he needed. And so, Captain Mar-Vell had his first passing encounter with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, not that they knew it. [Avengers (1st series) #72]

Weeks passed where Rick established himself in Greenwich Village as a singer and guitarist, but he left Mar-Vell in the Negative Zone. Their relationship became strained by this dual existence, and so Rick suggested they seek out Bruce Banner for help ending the partnership. Rick and Mar-Vell located the fugitive scientist, hiding out from the military in one of his secret desert labs. Banner had some ideas about how to separate Rick and Mar-Vell by accessing the Negative Zone and began constructing a device. However, Banner was stressed beyond his limits by the effort and accidentally triggered his transformation into the incredible Hulk. The fighting mad Hulk smashed Banner's device and fought Captain Marvel before storming off to be alone. Ultimately, Mar-Vell and Rick Jones would not find a solution to their bonding from Bruce Banner. [Captain Marvel (1st series) #20-21]

As Rick and Captain Marvel struggled to find a balance to their existence, Mar-Vell observed a fight between Reed Richards and Annihilus inside the Negative Zone, and Richards escaping back to Earth through a portal. Realizing that the Fantastic Four must be able to access the Negative Zone at will, Rick and Mar-Vell went to the Baxter Building to access it themselves. Captain Marvel gained entry to Mister Fantastic's lab while the FF were away, and began working the controls in order to locate Rick. The Avengers were alerted to the break-in through their shared security network and arrived in time to see Rick emerge from the Negative Zone portal, although not alone. Annihilus also passed through the portal and Captain Marvel joined the Avengers in sending Annihilus back into the Negative Zone.

Mar-Vell fled the scene after the battle, stealing an Avengers Quinjet as he was intent on leaving Earth and returning to Kree space. However, one of the Fantastic Four's machines had scanned Captain Marvel in the Baxter Building, determining he still contained a deadly level of nega-radiation. The Nega Bands had previously compensated for this effect by sending him back to the Negative Zone every three hours but, with Rick Jones on Earth, that principle no longer applied. Indeed, as Mar-Vell flew to Cape Canaveral to abscond with another rocket, the Nega Bands dissolved off his wrists and he had to acquire an old Uni-Beam he had hidden nearby from his time as Walter Lawson. Rick Jones and the Avengers realized that, if Mar-Vell's nega-radiation was not neutralized in three hours, he would fully revert to anti-matter, obliterating the Kree man and possibly the world as well.

The Avengers and Rick were forced to capture Mar-Vell, and he was too intent on leaving to listen to reason. Mar-Vell was taken into custody at Cape Canaveral and subjected to solar treatments from the Vision's jewel coordinated by Dr. Donaldson. Captain Marvel's life was saved as the nega-radiation was dispersed, but the danger was not over. The renegade Ronan had returned to the Kree Empire and seized power from the Supreme Intelligence. Seeking to resolve old scores, Ronan remotely reactivated Kree Sentry #459 (still in storage from Captain Marvel's first mission on Earth), sending the Sentry to retrieve Mar-Vell. [Avengers (1st series) #89]

Mar-Vell was taken prisoner despite the Avengers' efforts, as the Sentry brought him before Ronan. The Accuser had arrived on Earth and intended to activate Plan: Atavus. A doomsday weapon found in an abandoned Kree outpost in the Arctic Circle, Atavus produced de-evolutionary waves designed to reduce humanity and all of Earth to a more primitive state so that it no longer posed a threat to the Kree. Rick Jones and the Avengers tracked Ronan's scheme and freed Mar-Vell. Captain Marvel and the Avengers prepared to confront Ronan, but the Accuser ended the battle prematurely. He received word from home that the Skrulls had begun an all-out attack on Kree territories for the first time in years. The Kree-Skrull War had begun. Ronan teleported back to Hala as Captain Marvel and the Avengers dismantled Plan: Atavus. [Avengers (1st series) #90-91]

Xenophobia began to grip America as men from an Arctic outpost affected by Atavus warned the public about the Kree and the Avengers' involvement with one of them. A man named H. Warren Craddock was appointed head of the U.S. Alien Activities Commission to investigate these dire threats to freedom and liberty. With public opinion turning against them, Mar-Vell agreed to leave the city with Carol Danvers until the Avengers testified before Craddock's hearings and hopefully assuaged the public's fears. [Avengers (1st series) #92]

However, at the farm they were destined for, Mar-Vell and Carol were captured by Skrulls who intended to use Earth as a staging ground in the Kree-Skrull War. The Avengers followed them out to the farm and ending up fighting the Skrulls while Mar-Vell freed himself inside. Feeling that, even as an exile, he owed a duty to the Kree Empire, Captain Marvel constructed an Omni-Wave Projector. The projector was a Kree communication device, a military secret from the Skrulls, whose construction was only known to Kree of sufficient rank. Mar-Vell used the device to beam a message across countless light-years to warn the Kree of the Skrull presence on Earth. This was a great risk, for the Omni-Wave Projector could not only beam information faster-than-light, it could be used by non-Kree as a doomsday weapon to beam deadly energy instantaneously instead. As such, when Carol asked to see it, Mar-Vell destroyed the projector. For Carol was not Carol. The Super-Skrull revealed himself as his charade ended and Mar-Vell was re-captured, along with Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch. The Super-Skrull escaped with his prisoners aboard a flying saucer before the other Avengers could stop him. [Avengers (1st series) #93]

Seeking to snatch victory from defeat, the Super-Skrull transported Captain Marvel and his other captives back to the Skrull throneworld, hoping to bargain his way back into the good graces of Emperor Dorrek VII. Dorrek entombed Super-Skrull in an energy sphere instead, claiming the captives as his own. By threatening the lives of Pietro and Wanda, Dorrek insured the cooperation of Mar-Vell in reconstructing the Omni-Wave Projector for use by the Skrulls. [Avengers (1st series) #94-95]
