The New Mutants had been introduced the previous year in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (with Karma appearing earlier, in Marvel Team-Up #100). After having apparently lost the X-Men, Xavier intended to open the school to a group of "new" mutants returning it to its original concept in the early X-Men title. After the X-Men returned, the school remained.
When Xavier himself had to depart for outer space, Magneto took on the role of headmaster, though with limited success. For a while the New Mutants were on their own, until they accepted leadership under Cable. Title was eventually canceled and replaced as X-Force (1st series).
