M.O.D.O.K. Superior got a hold of the Zzzax electrostatic entity, liberated from a H.A.M.M.E.R. facility before he tamed it. He found himself at a disadvantage when he faced the Red Hulk, for Ross had previously bonded with the creature and maintained a level of influence on it. M.O.D.O.K. Superior stalked the Red Hulk after that, looking to remove him as a potential threat to future endeavors. He observed Red Hulk’s efforts to defend Avengers Tower and New York during the Serpent War. When Red Hulk fell in battle with the possessed Ben Grimm, M.O.D.O.K. Superior made the uncharacteristic decision to stand and fight against the Nazi army serving the Serpent and marching on the city. Whether it was ego at being upstaged or some glimmer of morality is uncertain. In the process, he learned Rulk had other foes hunting him, including Zero/One and Black Fog. Zero/One proved to be a byproduct of Scorched Earth and, after an information exchange, they joined forces against the Nazi Thule Society. [Hulk (2nd series) #36-38]
In time, M.O.D.O.K. Superior reunited the Intelligencia, working with Red Ghost, Mad Thinker and the Wizard and his Frightful Four. Their schemes never reached the heights of the Cathexis-Ray scenario, however. The group captured an alien Spaceknight and had a confrontation with the Avengers before nearly being killed when the Spaceknight was revealed to contain Ultron’s sentient code. [Avengers (4th series) #12.1 / Age of Ultron #10] M.O.D.O.K. Superior designed a Zero Cannon to create localized distortions of the Earth’s electromagnetic field with pinpoint accuracy. Before the Intel could unleash their scheme, however, they were targeted by Doctor Octopus and his Sinister Six. Octavius fought M.O.D.O.K. mind-to-mind and forced his opponent to declare him the superior intellect. [Amazing Spider-Man (1st series) #676] Finally, the group was seen trying to plan for the fallout of the latest round of hero vs. hero conflicts, only to be accosted by Deadpool. [Deadpool (3rd series) #55]
Whatever efforts M.O.D.O.K. Superior supposedly made to stabilize his ego seemed to fail over time. Eventually, he became just as megalomaniacal, insecure and… loud as his previous incarnation. M.O.D.O.K. reconnected with A.I.M. and once again became a leading figure over a splinter cell, although Monica and a newcomer named Andrew Forson held sway over their own factions as well. M.O.D.O.K.’s forces were defeated in New York when he tried to assassinate a former A.I.M. scientist who betrayed the organization. [Avengers vs. X-Men #0] He hired Kashmir Vennema and Batroc’s Brigade to steal technology known as the Harvester from an Arms Expo in Madripoor, but Captain American and Iron Man interrupted his plans. [Captain America and Iron Man #634-635]
While attempting to abduct the bride of Dracula from Hydra, M.O.D.O.K. was assaulted by her protector, Deadpool. He tried to escape their exploding ship in his Doomsday Chair, but Deadpool kicked M.O.D.O.K. out of his own support unit and left him in a cow pasture. [Deadpool: Dracula’s Gauntlet #4] M.O.D.O.K. also kidnapped a mutant boy as a potential tool, but his lair was stormed by Magneto and the Superior Spider-Man. M.O.D.O.K. and his big metal chair fell quickly before the Master of Magnetism. [A+X #14]
Andrew Forson eventually consolidated power in the largest faction of A.I.M., building a recognized nation on the island of Barbuda and assembling a powerful High Council. M.O.D.O.K. reached out to Maria Hill, Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and offered to exchange data on Forson in order to receive protection. M.O.D.O.K. and Hill parried and bartered for some time, as he tried to convince her that his offer was legitimate. He revealed a good deal of information on A.I.M. sites, resources and operations to prove his veracity, and Director Hill eventually agreed to employ M.O.D.O.K. and his A.I.M. loyalists as scientists covertly providing weapons for S.H.I.E.L.D. In return, Forson and his Cult of Entropy holding the reins of A.I.M. would be dealt with. [Secret Avengers (2nd series) #12-16]
It was a ruse, of course. M.O.D.O.K. and his assistant Snapper believed they could take over S.H.I.E.L.D. from the inside and re-forge it into an organization for their benefit. M.O.D.O.K. knew of the imminent arrival of an extra-dimensional entity known as Tlon and planned to orchestrate a conspiracy around a prophecy that “a great culling is coming.” He hired a Latverian assassin to assault Maria Hill and hint at the prophecy, driving her to paranoia. He also arranged in advance to hire Deadpool and Lady Bullseye for specific tasks after he entered S.H.I.E.L.D. Finally, M.O.D.O.K. and Snapper captured the cybiote known as the Fury and sent it into Tlon’s dimension, preparing for it to return at a certain place and time. All this was designed to systematically deconstruct Hill’s support system in the Secret Avengers Initiative, push her to the brink and then watch her fail as Tlon arrived, allowing M.O.D.O.K. to step forward and seize control of S.H.I.E.L.D.
In the meantime, Director Hill set up M.O.D.O.K. and Snapper with a Lair of Mad Science inside the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier Iliad. Of the field team, only Nick Fury, Jr. and Phil Coulson knew M.O.D.O.K. was supplying weapons and consulting for S.H.I.E.L.D. M.O.D.O.K.’s plan went into action when the Fury returned as intended aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. space station Misericordia. The chaos it caused allowed M.O.D.O.K. to secretly hack into the space station’s control network for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s satellites, sending them crashing to Earth. M.O.D.O.K.’s pre-arranged Latverian assassin attacked Maria Hill at this time, keeping her busy so that M.O.D.O.K. could act as the hero, stabilizing the satellites and taking down the assassin to save Hill’s life. Fury and Coulson nearly died fighting the Fury, as M.O.D.O.K. had hoped, but Hill deployed the rest of the team in time to rescue them adrift in space. [Secret Avengers (3rd series) #1-2]
M.O.D.O.K.’s scheme continued to develop around the Secret Avengers Initiative. The field teams extracted the Fury from the Kowloon Walled City in China and the deranged arms dealer Artaud Derrida from Sokotra, where he was selling a sentient black hole bomb named Vladimir. To the surprise of even M.O.D.O.K., a study revealed the Fury had somehow been pregnant before they found it. Though unprepared for this revelation, M.O.D.O.K. still incorporated it into the conspiracy he was feeding Hill to make her more paranoid. The Initiative was slowly dismantled, with Coulson going AWOL, Nick Fury assaulted by acid while looking for him, and Black Widow drawn into a portal while fighting Lady Bullseye on a bullet train. Hawkeye’s search for Coulson was diverted even further thanks to Deadpool, all according to M.O.D.O.K.’s design. [Secret Avengers (3rd series) #3-7]
Sort of. M.O.D.O.K. began having doubts about his own plot. He believed he had found a truly kindred spirit in Maria Hill, a woman ruthlessly pursuing her own vision of a better world, regardless of the consequences. M.O.D.O.K. began to feel guilt over his inevitable betrayal and started self-medicating. This only made things worse, as M.O.D.O.K. started to lose time and became paranoid that he was sabotaging his own schemes during his blackout. He killed the Latverian assassin in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody, not to cover his tracks but because he had fallen in love with Maria Hill and hated that she was hurt (even if it was under his orders). [Secret Avengers (3rd series) #8]
M.O.D.O.K. abandoned S.H.I.E.L.D. to reconnect with his purpose regarding Tlon and the takeover, but in doing so he lost control of the scheme. His lowly assistant Snapper was still wholly committed to their plan and had no rosy feelings towards Maria Hill. As the arrival of Tlon began, Snapper kidnapped Hill and Spider-Woman alongside the mercenaries now loyal to him instead of M.O.D.O.K. Meanwhile, M.O.D.O.K. connected with Hawkeye and Coulson, offering to help them defeat the coming of Tlon and the plot he himself had engineered. M.O.D.O.K. realized Snapper had altered his medication once he began espousing doubts about their scheme, leading to his blackouts. They coordinated with the Fury, who healed Nick Fury in exchange for their aid retrieving its babies. Snapper and Artaud Derrida intended to harness the imaginative power of Tlon to cleanse the world of everyone they disliked, and so M.O.D.O.K. and his Secret Avengers would have to stop them. [Secret Avengers (3rd series) #9-12]
The Nursery in Venezuela served as an imaginerium into the ideaspace of Tlon. Snapper was using drugged reconditioning on some of the most visionary minds on Earth to make them reshape the planet through their dreams in a prayer to Tlon. M.O.D.O.K. and the Secret Avengers attacked the Nursery and incorporated themselves into the ideaspace, pitting a more benevolent view of the world against Snapper’s. Finally, Vladimir was dropped on top of the Nursery and detonated, folding Tlon back on itself and saving the world. M.O.D.O.K. fled to a rural home in Ohio, and Maria Hill sought him out after she was placed on “administrative leave.” The two of them made peace as Hill thanked M.O.D.O.K. for saving her. They decided to enjoy this vacation together in Ohio. [Secret Avengers (3rd series) #13-15]
