When the superhero community erupted into a second Civil War, Kate’s good friend America Chavez was at the inciting battle that ended in the death of War Machine by Thanos. Kate visited America following this event to see if she was doing alright, and America explained that, as someone who traveled the multiverse, she knew there were James Rhodes out there living happy lives. When Kate asked if this meant everyone was interchangeable to her, America assured her friend that there were some people in her life worth protecting. When the war escalated and Clint Barton killed Bruce Banner, the world, including Kate, wanted answers. There were talks about bringing Kate in as a character witness for Clint and Kate was feeling guilty about leaving Clint on his own. However, America and the other Young Avengers soon found her moping and managed to cheer her up in her time of need. [Civil War II: Choosing Sides #2-3]
Ultimately, in the war between Carol Danvers insistence to use a new Inhuman’s near-perfect prediction powers for future crime and Tony Stark’s opposition against using this predicative justice, Kate sided with Iron Man. She participated in the big superhero showdown that ended in a ceasefire, when the Inhuman predicted the young Miles Morales would kill Steve Rogers. Fortunately, this fate was avoided and the conflict became pointless when the Inhuman ascended to a higher state of being. [Civil War II]
Heading back to Los Angeles, Kate was determined to strike out on her own. Early into her adventures back on the west coast, she was staking out a mansion full of dwarves from Nidavellir, one of the nine realms. Her work was interrupted when Robbie Reyes, the newest Ghost Rider, came crashing in with his flaming hot rod. Unknown to Robbie, his hell car had a portal in the trunk that Gwenpool had accidentally teleported into and thus the three unlikely heroes found themselves in conflict followed by a team-up. They successfully recovered a mystical gemstone and Kate bid farewell to Gwen for now. [Unbelievable Gwenpool #14-15]
On her own in Venice Beach, California and without her father’s money to fall back on, Kate started her private eye business again to address her lack of money. Of course, she did not have the $225 for the actual P.I. license, thus she was technically providing services illegally. However, she did have a hand-drawn sign for her new business, “Hawkeye Investigations,” where the “eye” was a picture of an eye. This led to quite a bit of confusion, as her first half dozen potential customers either thought she was an optometrist or the other Hawkeye. Her first case was tracking down a guy named Brad but she was distracted when she saw some thugs about to rob a bank with President masks, Point Break style. She stopped them and came back to meet her neighbor Ramone, who ran the surf shop downstairs. After making fun of her sign and agreeing to let Kate use her store’s parking space for now, she left in time for Kate’s first real customer to come in. This girl, named Mikka, was Ramone’s ex-girlfriend and was being relentlessly harassed online, but not in a way that the police could get involved. Kate took the case and staked out Mikka’s school, meeting a guy named Quinn, whom she smooth-talked into helping her do some cyber-sleuthing. Her stalking paid off when she noticed a boy named Larry taking pictures of Mikka, so she chased down and captured the creep. However, Mikka was kidnapped by another mysterious figure.
Upon taking Larry to the police, she discovered that the local Detective Rivera was not able to hold Larry on any charges and, in fact, Kate was lucky that Larry did not realize he could probably press charges against her for assault. However, Kate managed to place a tracker on Larry so she could follow him later. On the way back from the police station, she met with Quinn, who tried to ask her out but was interrupted by some frat guys harassing a young woman. Kate promptly kicked their butts and then met an attractive boy named Johnny, who she would later learn was Ramone’s brother. She found Ramone back at her office, worried about not being able to contact her ex-girlfriend Mikka, so Kate tracked down Larry. He had returned to a building housing a cult-like group that he had previously joined and he worried that Mikka was inside. He gave Kate the password and mask that members used but Kate was immediately discovered, given the password was too old. Thus, the entire mob of masked members chased her to a dead-end pier, where she was tackled into the ocean by one of the mob.
Upon resurfacing from the freezing-cold ocean, Kate discovered that the woman who had tackled her was actually undercover Detective Rivera. She warned Kate to stay away from this case, especially the mysterious stickers that seemed to cause the violent behavior in people. Upon returning home, she found Ramone, Johnny and Quinn had all converged and thus she took all three of her new friends to the cult leader’s house. They found a party underway and split up to search for clues. Kate managed to find a secret occult basement where she uncovered a tied-up Mikka but was found by Aggregate, the villain responsible. She was no match for his enhanced strength and, upon escaping upstairs, found the partygoers brainwashed to attack her. Her allies managed to escape, while Kate distracted Aggregate, whose increased muscle mass was fueled by negativity. She lured him to a drive-in movie playing The Sound of Music and subdued the man by letting the positive songs of Julie Andrews deflate his power. Later, while under interrogation at the police station, Aggregate exploded before he could reveal any details of who was behind his powers, but not before he hinted that Kate’s family might be involved. When Kate’s best friend America Chavez was on spring break, she decided to spend it hanging out at Kate’s new office space in L.A. The two of them were catching up when Kate convinced America to respond to a former lover’s message about meeting up. The two went on a road trip to meet up with the former flame, Magdalena, who betrayed America by drugging her for capture. Kate teamed up with America’s grandmother in order to first rescue Magdalena’s hostage father, followed by America and Magdalena, who were being forced to fight each other to the death. The adventure brought Kate and America closer together but Kate was still not willing to voice a romantic interest in her friend. [America #5-6]
The next case for Hawkeye Investigations involved Kate teaming up with Jessica Jones to find a missing sister named Rebecca. The only lead the two of them had involved the surfer Brad, whom Kate had originally tailed and who, upon questioning, denied any knowledge. Jessica used this opportunity to teach Kate many of the basics of being a private investigator, such as suspects always lie, stakeouts are usually boring, and you can get into all sorts of places you do not belong with enough confidence. After following Brad to a fancy party, they found Rebecca but with a much more beautiful body than her past photos suggested. They quickly discovered that this body came with the downside of her turning into a dangerous dragon at night or in times of stress, which led to a couple fights where they ended up bruised and beaten. However, Kate’s tactic of talking and compassion succeeded and got through to Rebecca. This led to Jessica splitting her commission with a very broke Kate. [Hawkeye (5th series) #5-6]
Upon completing a successful case and finally buying groceries, Kate returned home to be jumped by a group of thugs, courtesy of Madame Masque. She even left a gift containing a bloody necklace that once belonged to Kate’s dead mother and an invitation to chat at a particular address. In a terrible mood, she refused to open up to her friends and went to ask Detective Rivera to analyze the blood on the necklace. As suspected, the address was an office tower full of thugs whom Kate summarily dispatched. However, upon busting into the main office, she found her father looking much younger than his age implied. He admitted to gaining a new body from Masque, complete with a superpower to influence people with his voice. With the conversation not leading to any sort of reconciliation, he attempted to use this power to make Kate forget their exchange, but Kate successfully instituted her escape plan before he could finish.
Back at her office, she found a teenage girl begging for her help to rescue her missing father from some people that had lured him into some less than legal activities. This situation hit close to home for Kate, so she promised to take the case. She next ran into Ramone and Mikka at a diner, questioning her former stalker Larry about the cult that had kidnapped her. Kate did not approve of them getting more involved but could not stop them either. However, she did manage to ditch all of her friends to enter the last known location of the missing father, an underground fight club. Forced into an unarmed cage match with a large man, she did surprisingly well until three more men came into the ring to subdue her. When she woke up in a cage, she found the missing father trapped in another nearby cage, who admitted that he had started fighting due to falling on hard financial times.
Detective Rivera entered Kate’s office to find her friends, who quickly explained where Kate was located. The detective rushed off to get back-up in order to save her. For Kate’s next bout, a superhuman with the ability to light himself on fire was her opponent. She managed to reach through the bars of the cage to her quiver and retrieve a safety foam arrow to douse his flame, but she nearly lost it all, just before the police arrived to break up the fight club. The daughter and father were happily reunited at the police station, but Kate was still not ready to open up to her friends about her guilt over her father's involvement in all of the troubles they had been put through. [Hawkeye (5th series) #7-9]
Not willing to give up on Kate, her friends showed up the next day but were surprised to find the formally sullen Kate glamoured up and ready to hit the town to party. The five young adults went clubbing but were troubled by the drastic change in Kate’s behavior. After making out with Johnny, she went to the bathroom and tried to leave when classic Hawkeye villain Oddball attacked the club. Quinn found Kate and was surprised that she wanted to leave rather than fight. She even kissed him to convince him to come with her, which as much as he had wanted this to happen, he knew stopping the villain came first. Quinn had faith she would help in the end, and she reluctantly took out Oddball using throwing daggers rather than her standard bow and arrows. This all became clear with the reveal that the real Kate was trapped in a prison with Madame Masque’s goons, watching their leader parade around in a clone body of Kate Bishop, ruining her life.
Using a hairpin, Kate managed to trip the electrical circuits to open her cell and quickly take out all of the guards. She also found her muzzled father in an adjoining cell and demanded that he answer whether he killed her mother. She took his silence to mean that he had and left him tied up. She escaped the compound and tracked down Masque, still with her friends. The two got into a fight that ended with them on the Hollywood sign, where Masque attempted to appeal to Kate with dialogues of them not being so different. She claimed that both of them were daughters of powerful fathers that they were destined to become. Kate rejected this comparison and ultimately proved the better person when she rescued Masque from falling to her death. Masque attempted to stab Kate soon after but was shot by an arriving Detective Rivera. The wounded Masque fell off the sign and somehow escaped. When her friends arrived, she finally confessed that most of the evil deeds in town were connected to her father. They quickly alleviated her guilt by pointing out that she was not her father and had in fact saved them. On the way to get tacos, Kate hung back with Johnny and admitted that Masque had gotten one thing right and kissed him, to which a disappointed Quinn was witness. Two days later, Kate resolved to find her mother if she was still alive. [Hawkeye (5th series) #10-11]
Her first potential lead involved clones and led to a man named Jacob as well as a team-up with new Wolverine Laura Kinney and sister Gabby. These two were themselves clones and they were tracking down the same man. The three of them ended up captured but escaped, thanks to Kate. They then quickly subdued Jacob and his army of clone selves. Afterwards, Kate and Laura gossiped about fellow acquaintance Deadpool and discussed how great it was to have a teammate like Gabby. Kate realized that asking for help sometimes was acceptable and thus she called Clint to help her find her mother. [Hawkeye (5th series) #12]
Through some time-travel shenanigans, Kate was pulled back in time to an earlier part of Clint Barton’s career as Hawkeye. Eden, the villainess responsible, had the ability to pull people through time if she had access to their blood. Under the tutelage of Clint’s old mentor the Swordsman, she had gathered various expert marksmen from throughout the ages, such as Crossfire and Bullseye. Then she pitted all of them, mostly villains, against each other in a contest to see who could take the others out by hitting a target located on the belt buckle, sending them back to their proper time. Kate found Clint and helped dispatch a couple opponents. She tried to be careful about revealing any future information, leading to her introducing herself as Hawkess. The two archers bonded and eventually found the lair of Eden and Swordsman. After taking out the villains, Eve began to restore everyone to their proper time but not before Kate had the chance for a sincere conversation with the young Clint, after he hit on her of course. However, she realized as she began to disappear back to her time, that he had fallen asleep during her confessions. [Generations: Hawkeye & Hawkeye]
When Clint showed up to help Kate on her case of locating her mother, he mentioned that maybe she should help him with his thing first. He failed to mention until they were attacked that said thing was a mysterious woman trying to kill him. Tracking the woman down revealed her to be Eden, the very woman Kate had met on her recent time-travel adventure. She had a vendetta against Clint because she held him responsible for the indirect death of her child. After kidnapping Kate, she offered to bring back Kate’s mother from the past if she would help take out Clint. Eden did manage to bring her mother Eleanor forward in time temporarily and Kate was able to have a tearful reunion, apologizing for her behavior back when she was young. Devastated upon her mother disappearing back to the past, the choice of helping Eden was still a definitive “No” from Kate, as Clint was as much family to her as anyone. At this moment, an explosive arrow knocked Eden out, allowing Kate to escape and witness Clint replacing her with Madame Masque’s cloned Kate body. She told Clint off for this dumb plan and, just as she predicted, the two villains quickly teamed-up upon waking. [Hawkeye (5th series) #13-14]
Masque had a body tracker that her goons had followed and thus the pair soon found themselves surrounded. The Hawkeyes shot their way through a bunch of them before quickly switching clothes with two of them and sneaking their way out of the building. In the meantime, Eden used a suitcase full of blood to summon four supervillains forward in time, including Clint’s old mentor Swordsman. Kate and Clint went back to Madame Masque’s compound and broke out Kate’s still tied-up father. On the drive back to Kate’s place, Clint admitted that the Masque Kate clone had kissed him but he thought it was gross. When Kate protested he should be so lucky to kiss her even if she didn’t want that, Clint realized there was no way he could have broken this news in a good way, especially in front of Kate’s father. Soon after arriving back to Kate’s office, Eden and Masque arrived with an army of goons and the pair found themselves fending them all off with nothing but their skills and the occasional help of Mr. Bishop’s suggestive powers.
During the battle, Kate saved a little girl from a falling piece of building and was herself saved by Johnny with his secret superpowers. Kate used this situation to appeal to Eden. Surely, given her love for her daughter, Eden never meant to cause a situation where another girl could be hurt. Clint distracted Eden and Masque with a heartfelt apology, while Kate entered the opposing building from above and attacked the pair from behind. She grabbed Eden’s suitcase of blood and successfully had her call off her attacks, since the suitcase had the only remaining blood of her daughter. Eden repented and used the last of the blood to summon her daughter a final time, while Masque and Kate’s father managed to escape. At this point, the person behind Masque was revealed as none other than an alive Eleanor Bishop, who insisted Masque remove herself from the cloned body of her daughter. [Hawkeye (5th series) #15-16]
