In fact, Cable was cast out of the timestream an unknown distance into the future. A NEW future, born out Hope's renewed presence in the timeline. It was not a bright future, however, as Blaquesmith found Nathan and explained that Hope's destiny was impeded by the Avengers, leaving the planet a wasteland. Cable found a number of anti-mutant weapons and technology in the ruins of Avengers Mansion, even Doctor Doom's time machine to return him to the present. He was also on the verge of death, though, with the T-O virus running rampant through his system. Unchecked, the techno-organic virus recreated his lost arm and made him stronger on the outside, but it would consume his internals in less than 24 hours.
Seeing no hope for himself, Cable prepared for a suicide mission into the past to stop the Avengers from stopping Hope. Needing everything at his disposal, Cable restored his telepathy and telekinesis as he turned them away from preventing the spread of the T-O virus. He arrived in the past and engineered the escape of the Lethal Legion, luring out the Avengers so he could disable them one at a time. Nathan defeated Falcon, Captain America, Iron Man and the Red Hulk while searching for answers on why they would oppose Hope. Doing so caused the T-O virus to spread and consume nearly his entire body. He was dead on his feet by the time Wolverine and Spider-Man arrived to protect their teammates, while Cyclops and Hope also appeared to talk him down. In the end, the captive Avengers escaped Cable's traps and Nathan was beaten down by Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Back on Utopia, Cable was comatose and hospitalized as the T-O virus continued eating away at him. At the direction of Blaquesmith, though, Hope was able to save him. Tapping into the hidden depths of her power as the "mutant messiah," Hope revealed a connection to the Phoenix Force itself. She completely eliminated the techno-organic virus, eradicating it from Cable's system and restoring his health. Although he remained unconscious, Nathan was able to telepathically reach out to Cyclops. He warned Scott of what he had seen in the future and made him promise to protect Hope from the Avengers. [Avengers: X-Sanction #1-4]
Sure enough, war came between the Avengers and the X-Men over Hope's fate and the return of the Phoenix Force to Earth. Hope was eventually empowered by the Phoenix, and used her energies to undo the Decimation and restore new mutant births the world over. This came at great cost, however, with the death of Professor Xavier and Cyclops branded a criminal for his actions during the conflict. Cable slipped away from Utopia after awakening from his coma. He contacted Hope once, telling her he would always be watching over her, but now was the time for her to live her own life, a normal life if possible. [AvX: Consequences #1-5]
While Hope was living in peace with a foster family, Cable tried to find a way to disengage the "soldier" part of his brain and join her in a tranquil life. Naturally, Blaquesmith disagreed with Cable's plans. Nathan's devout former mentor believed it was still the Askani'son's duty to fight for the future. They had a harsh exchange of words before Cable and Blaquesmith parted ways again. [Cable and X-Force #10] Although his body was free of the techno-organic virus, Cable's hadn't physically adjusted to its absence. He was now missing an eye and his left arm was atrophied and nearly useless. Needing technical support, Cable sought out the mentally unstable Forge in the wreckage of Wundagore. Using telepathic prompting, Nathan helped Forge see his own mind as a machine, allowing the mutant inventor's power to kick in and guide him in repairing his own sanity. [Marvel NOW! Point One #1] Cable and Forge camped out in an aircraft salvage yard in Nebraska near Hope, so Nathan could keep an eye on his daughter. Forge went to work designing a body harness and exo-arm to restore Cable's mobility. Cable's physical problems were only advancing, however, as Cable began experiencing piercing headaches. He recruited Doctor Nemesis as well to help diagnose his condition. [Cable and X-Force #1]
Hope wasn't willing to wait for Cable to come and get her, however, and she pressured Domino into helping her find her father. As this group began to form out at Cable's X-Bunker in Nebraska, more facts emerged about Cable's headaches. They were being caused by precognitive visions of the future, a new ability alerting Cable to dangerous situations and threats before they happened. However, the visions were also pressing on his brain, causing him to seize and were basically a death sentence if they continued. Doctor Nemesis's surgery helped clear Nate's head, but it couldn't cure him. After stopping one threat, Cable asked his various allies to stay on as a new X-Force and help stop the next crisis. He refused to mess up Hope's normal life, though, and forcibly returned her to her foster family.
Recruiting Colossus for more muscle, Cable's X-Force intended to stop the spread of tainted meat from the Eat-More fast food chain. "The Girth" seen in Cable's vision were horribly mutated people infected by an unknown pathogen that affected humans and not mutants. X-Force's working theory was that Eat-More's rabid anti-mutant billionaire owner started the infection in order to cast blame on mutants. X-Force intended to destroy the tainted meat before it ever reached the restaurants. Their mission went sideways, however, as the infection broke out early in Eat-More's factory and a Deathlok from the future was spotted on the scene. The changing scenario forced X-Force to make hard choices. Doctor Nemesis concocted a weaponized transmode virus that killed the factory workers already infected by the Girth in order to neutralize the infection and prevent wider spread of the contagion. Unfortunately, the Girth reverted the infected back to normal forms upon their deaths. The Avengers Unity Division, local authorities and media arrived at the factory to find Cable and X-Force surrounded by dead humans. The team were labeled terrorists and forced to go on the run. [Cable and X-Force #1-4]
Cable and the group were unable to concentrate on clearing their names, for dire visions of the future continued pressing on Cable's mind. [Cable and X-Force #5-8] The visions began coming faster and faster, making it difficult for him to even focus on planning one mission before another warning pierced his consciousness. Domino helped pick up the slack, but Nate's condition was getting worse with each seizure. X-Force was eventually located by the Avengers and Cable was captured while helping the others escape to carry out their latest missions. [Cable and X-Force #10]
Meanwhile, Hope had made contact with Blaquesmith while looking for Cable. She learned Blaquesmith and a future incarnation of herself were responsible for Cable's condition. Operating from an apocalyptic future where one crisis had accumulated on top of another, adult-Hope and Blaquesmith decided to change the past instead of trying to save the future directly. Using a Deathlok's timeline probability sequencer and Blaquesmith's knowledge of Cable's mutation, they projected the Deathlok's knowledge base backwards through time and into Cable's brain. Their efforts permanently changed Cable, awakening latent precognitive abilities in him. Using paradox compensators, future-Hope and Blaquesmith monitored the changes caused to the future by Cable and X-Force, as they retroactively made that timeline progressively better. [Cable and X-Force #10-13]
Unfortunately, they had miscalculated. The older Hope and Blaqeusmith were unaware Cable was suffering consequences from their interference. Once the present-day Hope clued them in, Blaquesmith provided her with one of Cable's psimitar lances that could be used to release the psychic pressure on his mind. Nathan was hospitalized under house arrest at Avengers Mansion, where his latest seizure threatened to destroy the mansion with TK backwash.
On the other hand, the expansion of his power also caused Havok (his uncle and Avengers team leader) to experience the precognitive visions as well. Once Hope arrived and stabbed her dad in the head with the psimitar, his body and powers stabilized, and Havok gave Cable unofficial approval to continue with his quest to improve the future, without the Avengers hunting them. [Cable and X-Force #13-14]
In the aftermath, Cable and X-Force found new mission parameters. Doctor Nemesis and Forge created a neuro-sync that diverted pressure from Cable's brain by uploading his visions directly to the X-Bunker's computers. This allowed the entire team to peruse the visions through a recorded feed (Boom Boom called it “Basic Cable”) while leaving Nate unaffected by seizures. However, the rewiring of his brain also meant that Cable's telepathy and telekinesis were gone again. The traumatic experience of engineering his precognitive powers meant that his more active psychic abilities were lost in the shuffle. [Cable and X-Force #15-17]
Meanwhile, Storm and Psylocke had unexpectedly created a separate X-Force faction out in Los Angeles. Perhaps most shocking of all, they had included Bishop as a member. Back from the far future, Bishop had found peace and a new mission in life from a monastic order, and no longer sought to end Hope's life. That naturally wasn't good enough for Hope, who immediately went after Bishop once she learned he was alive. Cable pursued his daughter, intent on killing Bishop himself to prevent her from staining her soul with his death.
The situation became even more dire when Stryfe intervened. Having escaped Apocalypse's tortures in the future, Stryfe wanted revenge on Cable and kidnapped the three of them. He locked Hope and Bishop in a room together, hoping to goad Hope into killing Bishop while Cable watched silently and helplessly from the next room. Miraculously, it was Bishop who helped talk Hope out of it. Although he was willing to die for what he had done, Bishop also didn't want Hope to bear the weight of his death. He explained that he and Cable had given her two role models growing up: the zealot and the soldier. It was up to her to decide whose example to follow.
When Stryfe's plan failed, he decided just to kill both X-Force teams and be done with it. Stryfe forced Hope to mimic his Omega-class telepathy and telekinesis, then fled while leaving her with more power than she could handle. Again, it was Bishop who saved Hope, using his knowledge of energy rechanneling to coax her into releasing the power straight up instead of hurting her friends. Bishop's actions that day earned him a reprieve from both Cable and Hope. With their vendetta in the past, Cable decided to look towards the future. He got together with Psylocke and began planning a new and more proactive approach to X-Force, instead of merely reacting to his future visions as they came. [Vendetta crossover]
