The crisis passed, Quasar returned to his home reality, where he found himself eagerly greeted by friends and colleagues. At last reunited with each other, Wendell and Kayla finally expressed their feelings for each other and made up for lost time in epic fashion, making out in a quantum convertible as it soared through the sky.

Returning to his responsibilities soon after, Wendell and Kayla fetched the injured Kismet’s healing cocoon and delivered it to Project PEGASUS, where Quasar was reunited not only with the Squadron Supreme, who had been taken residence at the think tank, but the Blue Shield, who had taken Quasar’s advice a year before and not quit his position as security chief. Among the subjects of study at the Project was the Angler, the trans-dimensional entity that had clashed with Quasar and Kayla several times before. Without warning, the Angler freed itself and attacked, quickly proving itself a match for not only Quasar but the entire Squadron Supreme. Using the only weapon he knew would work, Quasar zapped the Angler with the Nth Projector. Unfortunately, this only made matters worse, as the Angler switched place with the more powerful Geometer, a powerful entity from the reality which had created the Angler and which was looking for ways to reorder reality into a more orderly format. Again using his intelligence and ability to reason, Quasar managed to convince the Geometer that the only way bring order to a chaotic universe was to travel back in time to the start of the universe and attempt to fix it from there. Convinced that it could accomplish more in a moment this way than during its billion-year history, the Geometer agreed and departed to investigate time travel. To his worried colleagues, Quasar advised that, based on advice from the Watcher, there was no danger as he was confident the creature could only create divergent timelines and would be unable to affect their own. [Quasar #51-52]

During the battle with the Angler and Geometer, Kayla had accidentally displayed the Starbrand powers, leading Quasar to surmise that either she had retained a portion of it after its transfer to Eriskigal or the Living Tribunal had returned the weapon to Kayla after Eriskigal’s death. Eager for answers, Kayla submitted to study by the Project PEGASUS scientists but, when her phobias about hospitals surfaced, she refused to go further. It was that very night, however, that another idea of how to rid her of the Starbrand suddenly occurred to her. Without explanation, Kayla flew off, leading Quasar to the Monster Isle, the longtime home of the Mole Man and the recently adopted headquarters of Warlock’s Infinity Watch.

When Moondragon, one of the members of the Watch, met the two on the beach, Quasar quickly realized that it had been she who had planted the idea of the two coming there in Kayla’s head. Moondragon not only admitted it but explained that she had done so to assess the Starband and Kayla’s fitness to use it. Quasar, however, vowed not to allow such an invasion of privacy without a fight. Unfortunately, Moondragon had prepared for this as well, summoning Adam Warlock. The enigmatic man had his own interest in Quasar, wishing to gauge whether Wendell was as worthy as his predecessor, Captain Mar-Vel. With his Soul Gem, Warlock brought Quasar into the psychic plane, where he split both himself and Wendell into “karmic manifestations” of their past selves, all to demonstrate Wendell’s psychic fitness as protector of the universe. Reluctantly, Quasar submitted to the tests and passed to Warlock’s satisfaction. Returned to reality, Quasar found that Kayla too had passed her test with Moondragon and together the two lovers departed Monster Isle, returning home. [Quasar #53]

When a giant thruster of extraterrestrial origin was suddenly installed on the far side of the moon, pushing it out of orbit and towards the Earth, Quasar was one of several heroes that flew to deactivate it. However, Quasar soon learned that this had merely been a distraction, created by a mysterious group of alien pirates known as the Starblasters, so that they could kidnap Kayla and thus acquire the Starbrand. When Quasar learned that they had also kidnapped the powerful Watcher, he realized that he needed help and called for aid from all of the heroes he knew. After bringing those that responded up to speed, Quasar gave chase after the Starblasters. Along the way, they clashed with (and were then joined by) Gladiator and the Shi’ar Imperial Guard. The Starblasters’ trail eventually led to the Labworld of the Stranger, where Quasar came to blows with the leader of the Starblasters, a powerful robotic entity called Skeletron. Kayla and the Starbrand had come to Skeletron’s attention months before during Kayla weeks-long adventure in space. Brought to the planet Scadam, she had used the Starbrand to destroy the attacking fleet, an armada commanded by Skeletron. Now, months later, Skeletron had come searching for the power that had destroyed his fleet. Unfortunately, the explanation did Quasar little good and Skeletron proved too powerful for him to stop.

Meanwhile, the Stranger, who had entered an alliance with Skeletron in order to obtain the Starbrand for study, had managed to trick Kayla into transferring it to him. However, the uniqueness of the Starbrand energy surprised the Stranger, resulting in an energy release which opened a rift to the universe of the Starbrand’s origin. Taking advantage of the chaos that followed, Quasar went searching for Kayla and, when he managed to find her, apologized for everything he had put her through. Unfortunately, their reunion proved brief, as Quasar departed to face Skeletron, who was intending to absorb all of the Starbrand energy that saturated the Earth of this New Universe. In the end, it was the Stranger who defeated Skeletron, using his vast powers to capture this strange Earth and bring it into his own universe, cutting Skeletron off from his source of power and separating the two universes once more.

Though the universes were now separated, the Earth of the New Universe remained in this one, with it orbiting the Stranger’s Labworld as one of its moons. More disconcerting was that the Starbrand remained in the Stranger’s hands. Like with Eriskigal, however, the Living Tribunal intervened, declaring the presence of the new Earth and its Starbrand upset the universal balance. To solve the issue, the Living Tribunal declared the world be sealed, allowing none of its anomalous power to leak out into the greater universe. Unfortunately for Quasar, the decree was carried out while Kayla remained on this alternate Earth, quarantining her and all of the Starbrand energy she might still possess. [Starblast crossover]

Desperate to get to Kayla, Quasar tried first to break through the barrier, then to seek out the Living Tribunal. While the Living Tribunal refused to release Kayla, he did offer to let Quasar inside the barrier, though he would never be able to leave again. Unable to shirk his responsibilities as Protector of the Universe, or leave his friends and family behind, Wendell painfully declined the offer. As a final gesture, he left a giant message in the sky saying goodbye to Kayla, saying that he was sorry. [Quasar #58]

Deciding that he had become too preoccupied with the events of Earth, Wendell returned home to say goodbye to all his friends and family. After doing so and tying up loose ends, he did one last painful task; telling Kayla’s father about her. Her father was naturally angry, but it was nothing compared to the anger of the Presence. Unknown to Quasar, the Presence’s son, Vanguard, had died aiding Quasar in his battle against the Starblasters. The Presence attacked Wendell, alongside his daughter Darkstar, seeking retribution for his son’s death. When the Presence threatened to find his family, Wendell realized that this was a no win situation and used the villain’s energy blast to teleport away, faking his death. With the heroes of Earth believing him dead, Wendell set out into space on the next stage of his life. [Quasar #60]

Wendell’s first stop was Saturn’s moon Titan, where he responded to an invitation from Starfox. The Avenger invited Quasar to join him in a special annual tradition, which he was shocked to learn was a yearly truce and exchange of gifts with Starfox’s brother, Thanos. Unfortunately, Thanos’ gift was a stolen heirloom from a space empire’s royal family, leading to a battle with its heavily armed royal guard. As was his way, Thanos was prepared to kill the captain of the guard, until Quasar moved to intervene, refusing to let the guardsman die. So resolute was he that Quasar stood his ground when the Mad Titan threatened to kill him. Fortunately, Starfox diffused the whole situation by returning the stolen heirloom and smoothing things over with his powers of empathic projection. With the royal guard gone, the trio parted ways, but not before Thanos told his brother to come alone next year. [Quasar #59]

Trying to get his protection of the universe organized, Quasar constructed a series of tracking stations to monitor cosmic transmissions, which he called his “big ears.” [Silver Surfer (3rd series) #111]

Wendell wasn’t in space for long before he received a call for aid from his mother. A mysterious alien race named the Charter had arrived at Earth and beamed a message of peace into the sky. Investigating the aliens, Quasar learned the Charter were not one race but a collection of species who wished to recruit Earth into their alliance. Soon after, however, Quasar found every member on the Charter ship dead and was then tricked by the killer into making a recording of himself that would be later doctored into a false confession.

Apparently now wanted for murder, Quasar became an intergalactic fugitive and fled pursuit by the Charter’s Cosmic Commandoes, until the Silver Surfer and Beta Rey Bill came to his aid. When the heroes selflessly saved the Earth from a stray asteroid, two of the commandoes, Morfex and Xenith, realized Quasar wasn’t a killer and came to his side. Naming themselves the Star Masters, the group dedicated themselves to clearing Quasar’s name. Upon arriving at the Hub, the group came into conflict with a group of Axi-Tun soldiers, who were the real culprits for the murder. [Star Masters #1-3]

Quasar and the Star Masters were quickly defeated by the Axi-Tun and cast into the Cauldron of Conversion, a device that would break down their forms into to their base components and incorporate their DNA into a deadly super virus. Fortunately, they were saved by Quasar, who created quantum bubble around them and drilled their way out of the Cauldron. The group then freed the captured Rigellian called Tana Nile, who confirmed Quasar’s innocence with her telepathy.

Determining that Lord Voltan, leader of the Axi-Tun, was responsible for the Hub murders, the Star Masters went to arrest him. Voltan, however, used his abilities to drain the group’s will and overwhelmed them with his super-human soldiers. For Quasar in particular, Voltan used his abilities to persuade Wendell into believing that he had in fact murdered the character after all. Through Tana Nile’s psychic calls, she reminded Quasar of how his strong his will actually was, giving the man the inner strength to free himself. In the end, Voltan was defeated by Quasar and the rest of the Starmasters, and punished for his crimes. [Cosmic Powers Unlimited #4-5]

The Star Masters disbanded soon after, though Quasar remained in contact with Silver Surfer and Beta Rey Bill. When one of his transmission stations received a message from Genis-Vell, calling Silver Surfer to Zen-La, he and Beta Ray sought out the Surfer to pass on the message. While both offered to help the Surfer, citing their bond as Star Masters, the Surfer declined. [Silver Surfer (3rd series) #121-122]

When Avengers all around the world came under attack from mysterious mystical forces, Quasar was one of many former Avengers that responded to their call to arms. Along with all the other Avengers, he fell prey to a spell by Morgan Le Fey that transformed everyone into a medieval facsimile of themselves. Wendell was one of the first to regain his memories when Captain America’s pleas broke through the spell. Together with a small group of other Avengers, he fought against his mind controlled friends before turning on and defeating Le Fey. [Avengers (3rd series) #1-3]

Quasar returned to space soon after when one of his listening stations detected the threat of the vastly powerful extra-dimensional Infinites. With the aid of several other Avengers, Wendell battled against the Infinite’s Servitors. However, the sheer scale of the assault proved too much for them. While they managed to rescue Wendell’s friend Jack of Hearts, they were forced to flee and could only watch as the Servitors destroyed an inhabited world, which was then re-shaped by another of the Infinite’s giants into a massive ring. The Infinites then travelled the multiverse, realigning galaxies to improve the flow of the multiverse, and were so vast they failed to fathom they were slaughtering trillions of lives. With Moondragon’s aid, and the linked minds of all the Avengers, Quasar managed not only to summon Eternity, but temporarily merged themselves with the entity. Each Avenger pleaded their case to the Infinites, convincing them to cease their actions and undo what damage they could. [Avengers: Infinity #1-4]

Returning from their space-based mission, Quasar and his comrades discovered that while they were away the Galactic Council had turned Earth into an intergalactic prison. With their fellow Avengers trapped inside, Wendell’s small group sought out Lilandra, the head of the Council, to plead their case. Their plea fell on deaf ears, however, and soon after the group was ambushed and captured by the true orchestrator of these events, the Supreme Intelligence. The Kree’s leader intended to wipe the Avengers’ minds and leave them on a devastated Shi’ar world in a plot to frame the Earth and further tensions. Fortunately for them, the Avengers managed to escape.

In a first for Quasar, he managed a double quantum jump from Hala to Earth, picking up about two dozen heroes on the way. On Earth, the Kree had planted a spore of Ego the Living Planet, who was growing large enough to cover the entire surface of the planet. While the heroes fought Ronan the Accuser, who was drawing energy from Ego, Quasar volunteered to enter a device that would draw Ego’s mass into himself. An unfortunately side effect of the process, though, was that he could not remain on Earth, or any other planets, as Ego would take root inside him. Knowing that Earth risked infection if he did not leave, Wendell left for space, essentially exiled. [Maximum Security crossover]
