FIRESTAR: Page 2 of 6

Afterwards, Angelica returned to West Morris, New Jersey and made amends with her father, returning to a normal high school life. The White Queen was not done with her forever, though. When the opportunity came, Frost alerted Freedom Force to Firestar's existence during the time of the Mutant Registration Act, prompting Mystique to take measures to recruit the young girl. The situation quickly degenerated, however, in part due to Spiral's lunacy. Freedom Force's resident sorceress stabbed Bart Jones through the chest when he tried to protect his daughter, and an enraged Firestar fled to the nearest hospital with her injured father. While there, an agent of the mercenary organ thieves known as the Arms of Salvation overheard the doctor tell Angelica that her father would need a kidney transplant. The Arms used this information to bribe Firestar into capturing Mystique for them, as they wanted to dissect her shape-changing physiology for their own purposes. Firestar agreed in order to save her father, because she blamed Mystique for his injuries, and because the Arms lied and said they only wanted to cull a tissue sample from Mystique.

After battling Freedom Force, Angel defeated Mystique and brought her back to the Arms of Salvation headquarters. While waiting for news on her father's transplants, the Arms' leader offered Firestar a permanent position with their organization. When she declined, Cross and Fitch attempted to kill her instead. Freedom Force created a distraction that saved Angelica's life, as they had tracked Mystique to that location, and Angel snuck away long enough to find out what the Arms of Salvation really did with their patients. She freed Mystique, and the two of them confronted Cross in the exo-armor he had designed to defeat Firestar. After Firestar stopped Cross with a blast of freon gas, she and Mystique came to terms with one another. Mystique allowed Angelica to return to her normal life, and mis-filed her as "Killed in Action" in the government records so that no one else would come after her either. Angelica went back to West Morris to help her father with his recuperation, but it wasn't long before someone else interrupted her privacy. This time it was Dwayne Taylor, alias Night Thrasher, who had hacked Emma Frost's computer systems to gain information on Angelica in order to recruit her for his new team of superhuman teenagers. Hardly a people person, Night Thrasher's brusque "invitation" came across more as a threat, and Firestar arrived at the Ambrose Building in Manhattan ready to defend herself and her family's anonymity. Angel was forced to put aside her animosity, though, when she and Thrasher's other recruits (Marvel Boy and Nova) were drawn into battle with Terrax, the former Herald of Galactus. Despite her irritation at Night Thrasher, and general reluctance to act as a "super-hero," Firestar agreed to join this new team, dubbed "the New Warriors" by the media. The New Warriors had a rocky start, but remained together battling a number of impressive foes including Juggernaut, Proteus and the Mad Thinker. With a number of egos and loudmouths on the team, the soft-spoken Angelica found herself most comfortable with the well-mannered and seemingly self-assured Marvel Boy. When they were trapped on a rocket heading into space and believed they were going to die, Marvel Boy revealed his face and real name to Firestar in order to help console her. [New Warriors (1st series) #6] Angelica and Vance grew closer because of this shared moment, and it was Angel who eventually convinced Vance to reveal his identity to the rest of the team as well. After a mission in Brazil, the New Warriors were returning to the Ambrose Building when an intruder alert signaled them about unwanted guests in their home. Storming the penthouse, they found the White Queen and her Hellions occupying the building. It seemed Frost had traced Night Thrasher's hacking efforts, and was looking to settle accounts. The New Warriors engaged the Hellions in battle and Firestar ended up fighting a new recruit named Bevatron. While trading bio-blasts, Bevatron accidentally backed up over the edge of the building, and was badly wounded in the fall. Emma Frost and the Warriors' housekeeper Tai had wagered on the outcome of the individual conflicts and so, when the Warriors won 3-2, Frost officially renounced any claim she had on Firestar. Angelica countered that statement by telling Frost that she never HAD any claim on Firestar, and that she was free to make her own choices, as she always had been. [New Warriors (1st series) #9-10]

After this, Angelica and Vance went on their first date, and their relationship continued to grow stronger. [New Warriors (1st series) #14] Vance even confided in Angel his worst secret, about how his father used to abuse him when he was younger. As the New Warriors continued their adventures, they were given the chance to truly prove their mettle in a reunion battle with Terrax, who was no longer in the weakened state he was in when the group first formed. Their battle waged all the way across Long Island, to the East River between Manhattan and Queens, with many of the Warriors and their allies falling in Terrax's path. Despite being dead on her feet, Firestar kept on opposing Terrax until Nova arrived with the Fantastic Four as reinforcements. Tapping into more and more microwave energy, Angelica even managed to harm Terrax all by herself before the Silver Surfer came to Earth and carted off his fellow former Herald. Despite this impressive win, events began to go badly for the Warriors soon afterwards. Night Thrasher discovered that his guardians, Chord and Tai, had been manipulated his Taylor Foundation for illegal purposes, and uncovered a web of lies and deceit shadowing his entire life. He dismissed the Warriors and ran off on his own when the team refused to go to extreme measures to help him find out the truth. [New Warriors (1st series) #18-19] Even worse, Marvel Boy's father finally took his abuse a step too far, and Vance unthinkingly lashed out with his telekinetic powers with enough force to accidentally kill his father in the act. As the other Warriors got involved in the mystery and intrigue surrounding Night Thrasher and his origins in Kampuchea, Firestar remained behind in America to support Vance during his trial for first degree murder and negligent homicide.

The trial was difficult for all involved, especially Angelica when she was called to testify by the prosecution against Vance. Through legal maneuvering, D.A. Rachel Dreyfuss was able to manipulate Firestar into admitting that Vance had demonstrated considerable control over his powers in the past, and probably could have stopped his father that day without killing him. Even the heart-wrenching testimony of Vance's mother about Arnold Astrovik's years of abuse towards both her and Vance was not enough to swing favor back to the defense. Marvel Boy was convicted of negligent homicide by a jury of his peers and sentenced to not less than fourteen months prison time inside the Vault. During the trial, Angel's father came to the courthouse, and the two talked about her becoming Firestar again for the first time since she joined the New Warriors. Angel confessed to her father how much she truly loved Vance, and she didn't know if she could continue without him. [New Warriors (1st series) #22-25]
