Dead as he now was, Martin Preston's torment was nowhere near ending. Mephisto maintained his former pawn in Hell, subject to incredible torture at the Devil's hands and those of his demon minions. The brutality he suffered warped his body, causing it take on an appearance like those of the demon who once inhabited him. Through unknown circumstances, however, Master Pandemonium was released from Hell by the power of Lore. A rival nexus being from another reality, Lore intended to kill and replace Wanda Maximoff in this reality. Her traditional Modus Operandi was to first render her victims mad, making it easier to overcome them.

Master Pandemonium had become fixated on merging his powers with Wanda as he had with her twins, twisting this into an obsession he saw as love. Lore convinced him Wanda would return his love if only she was broken spiritually first. At Lore's urging, he had his demonic apparitions attack Avengers Compound, then lure Wanda to the New England village of Unity, where she would be isolated. Lore and Pandemonium corrupted several of Wanda's fellow Avengers with demon forms as well. However, they were unable to break her and, when Master Pandemonium tried to hold Wanda for Lore, she showed utter contempt for her pawn and blasted them both. Lore banished the surprised Pandemonium with a wave of her hand, removing him from the playing field. [Scarlet Witch (1st series) #1-4]

Realizing he had been played, Master Pandemonium sought sanctuary to lay low and ruminate on his lost soul. He found himself squatting in the Scarlet Witch's old abode in New Jersey, watching his own old movies and reflecting on what it once felt like to have a soul. His reverie was interrupted by Wiccan and Speed of the Young Avengers, who were looking for Wanda. Pandemonium fought with them at first, until he recognized Wiccan's magic as the same as Wanda's. Preston learned the boys believed themselves to be the reincarnations of Thomas and William. Feeling something akin to regret, Master Pandemonium ended the fighting and told the boys what he could about their mother and their past. Afterwards, Wiccan and Speed left Pandemonium in peace to continue his reflection. [Young Avengers Presents #3]

Master Pandemonium's hard times fell even harder. His body seemed to "remember" the grotesque positioning of Thomas and William in place of his hands, and two Raksha demons manifested themselves from his hands in the same way. Like rebellious hand puppets, the demons admonished and ridiculed Preston, depriving him even of the ability to feed himself without their allowance. Master Pandemonium was found and bullied by the former Ghost Rider named Dan Ketch, who used the gateway in Pandemonium's chest to transport to Mephisto's Hell dimension. [Ghost Riders: Heaven's on Fire #2]

This encounter seemingly provoked Pandemonium to clean himself up and get back on his feet. He was soon seen in the employ of Anton Satan, Kid Blackheart. With the archangel Zadkiel leading an uprising in Heaven, the holy realm appeared vulnerable. Kid Blackheart kidnapped Caretaker, a woman who contained her own living gateway to Heaven, and used Pandemonium to funnel demons out of Hell and through Caretaker to invade Heaven. The horde of demons was cut off when Daimon Hellstorm and Jaine Cutter defeated Master Pandemonium and the Raksha. [Ghost Riders: Heaven's on Fire #4-6] Pandemonium's renewed alliance with Hell left him vulnerable to the destruction of the afterlife realms during the Chaos War by Amatsu Mikaboshi. Like many demons and Hellbound, Master Pandemonium was unmade for a time until the Chaos King was defeated by a company of heroes. [Chaos War: Chaos King #1]

In his next outing, Master Pandemonium became one of many new recruits for the Department of Occult Armaments, the former supernatural exploitation arm of Hydra mixed with the Nazi's Thule Society. They came together under the command of Sin, daughter of the Red Skull and former host of Skadi, goddess daughter of the Asgardian Fear God, the Serpent. Sin intended to gather the hammers of the Worthy to create the Final Sleeper robot. Pandemonium and the D.O.A. battled the Avengers while Sin prepared her destroyer. They were beaten, but most slunk away and regrouped to continue serving Sin's ideals. [Fear Itself: The Fearless #8-12] Master Pandemonum took on an apprentice, dubbed Master Mayhem, who served the D.O.A. in his stead sometime afterwards. [Venom (2nd series) #40-42]

Master Pandemonium was next seen working for the Hellfire Club, becoming an instructor for the Hellfire Academy, their rival institution to the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #20] Under the belief that he was serving the greater glory of Hell and Mephisto, Pandemonium instructed the Hellions of the academy in Hell literature, demonic pacts and other acts of supernatural evil. He wasn't above participating in the ritual torture of students in detention hall, either. The X-Men eventually located the Hellfire Academy and brought the fight to them. Master Pandemonium faced off against Wolverine, only to have his demonic hands severed by Logan's claws. While Preston seemed stunned, the demon puppet hands were undeterred, shouting taunts and obscenities at Wolverine as they tried to drag themselves towards him. [Wolverine and the X-Men (1st series) #31-35]

Master Pandemonum had some rather bizarre schemes after that. He was found in the Lazy River Retirement Home outside Pittsburgh, inducing homicidal rage in the residents while using human sacrifice to open a gateway back into Hell. Pandemonium was stopped by the wandering team of Spider-Woman, Porcupine and Ben Urich. [Spider-Woman (5th series) #9] Later on, he became subservient to Satana Hellstrom in the corner of Hell she had carved out for herself. She made him and his demon hands serve as a chef in a metaphorical restaurant in her Hell, where she tried to lay claim to the soul of Doctor Strange. He served Strange demonically possessed bacon, but was defeated when Strange's tiny astral form magically induced vomiting inside his own body, and the bacon covered Pandemonium. It was... strange. [Doctor Strange (4th series) #14]

Pandemonium still had dreams of power for himself, however, and managed to cultivate a Cult of Pandemonium in San Francisco, using worshippers to build his power base. [Superior Spider-Man (2nd series) #1] Through blood sacrifices at the properly prepared altar, Master Pandemonium returned to Earth from Hell with newfound abilities. His demons could now serve as homunculi and possess the bodies of humans they made contact with, turning them into demonic hosts. In turn, the Raksha-possessed humans became demonic enough to make them extensions of Master Pandemonium's mind and power. Through these acts, Pandemonium hoped to build his own Hell on Earth.

The Superior Spider-Man took note of Pandemonium's infection in the Bay area and called in Doctor Strange for assistance. The two heroes confronted Pandemonium at the Palace of Fine Arts, but he continued to draw strength from the demonically infected civilians. The demons were a part of him, and so too were the humans now. Master Pandemonium was able to grow to giant size by assimilating the demonic mass of his victims into his own body. Faced with this larger problem, Doctor Strange borrowed the mechanical arms of Spider-Man to cut into Pandemonium's borrowed shell to reach the true body of Martin Preston at its core. Strange made a combination surgical and mystical strike to sever Master Pandemonium from his assimilated victims. At the Superior Spider-Man's suggestion, Doctor Strange then altered the exit point of Pandemonium's "Hell" dimensional portal. Now, instead of linking to the pocket Hell dimension of the Raksha, it opened directly into Mephisto's personal domain. The Lord of Lies took the opportunity to reclaim his former plaything, turning Martin Preston's body inside out to drag him to Hell through his own portal. Master Pandemonium is now back suffering the eternal torments of Mephisto, but it's only a matter of time before he escapes or Mephisto chooses to use him again. [Superior Spider-Man (2nd series) #4-6]
