Death continued to be elusive for the Grandmaster, however. He returned seeking a new game and challenged his brother the Collector to a match. The Grandmaster recruited the Hulk with the promise of restoring his lost love Jarella to life. He urged the Hulk to gather the Defenders to fight as his pawns and made similar promises to Doctor Strange, Namor and the Silver Surfer. The Collector had recruited Banner's current rival the Red Hulk and a team of Offenders with Baron Mordo, Tiger Shark and Terrax. The Red Hulk was an uncontrollable wild card, however. He killed 
the Hulk, then interrupted the other matches and killed all the players in order to prove he could win against any opponent. He even provoked Galactus himself, bringing the game quickly to a close. The Grandmaster chastised Red Hulk for being so reckless and resurrected the Defenders to deal with the unruly pawn. The Red Hulk apparently killed the Grandmaster, although that hardly seems likely under the circumstances. The Collector took up the body of his fallen brother and abandoned the situation, having found the game highly unsatisfying. [Hulk (2nd series) #10-12]
When the Elders of the Universe next appeared, the Contemplator had uncovered a great cosmic threat known as the Awareness. He prognosticated that the mercenary known as Deadpool was uniquely qualified to face this evil and recruited a Deadpool Corps from various timelines. The Grandmaster objected, questioning whether Deadpool was truly the right choice and chiding the Contemplator for making a decision of such magnitude without consulting the other Elders. In truth, the Grandmaster was merely looking for an excuse to indulge his passion. He proposed a challenge between the Deadpool Corps and two other candidates he had in mind: the Mad Folk of the Crab Nebula and the Robot Race of Centauri-9. In the name of expediting the process, the Contemplator agreed and the Deadpool Corps handily won a game of "capture the flag" engineered by the Elders. [Prelude to Deadpool Corps #5]
Proving himself to be a sore loser, the Grandmaster whinged to the Champion about the Contemplator's actions, putting the dim but physically imposing Elder in the Deadpool Corps' path. 
[Deadpool Corps #1] This amounted to nothing and the Deadpool Corps proved triumphant against the Awareness. The Contemplator provided them with special rings to summon the aid of an Elder of the Universe when in dire peril, but the Deadpools abused the power and ultimately Grandmaster and the other Elders retrieved the rings and sent the Deadpool Corps back to their home realities. The time came when reality itself failed and the Incursion crisis brought about the early death of all that is. Thanks to the efforts of the super-beings of Earth, the Seventh Cosmos was reincarnated as the Eighth, a fact that eluded many but caught the attention of the Elders of the Universe. They sought out Battleworld, the lingering remnants of the small, transitional dimension that existed between the ultimate end and the new beginning. The Power Primordial had been revitalized as well, leaving behind a crystal of ultimate power known as the Iso-sphere.
The Grandmaster (naturally, of course) proposed a game. In the wreckage of Battleworld, each of the twelve interested Elders recruited a Champion to fight for their interests. A single elimination progression contest raged, until only the Grandmaster and the Collector's Champions remained and each Elder possessed half the full power of the Iso-Sphere. Grandmaster sponsored Jake 
Gallows, the Punisher of the 2099 timeline, while Collector had chosen the Maestro, the malevolent future Hulk and one of the few immediate survivors of the destruction of Battleworld.
When the time came for the final match, however, the Champions refused to fight. Instead, the Maestro proposed a new game, taking advantage of the Grandmaster and the Collector's compulsions to get them to agree. Maestro and Gallows would take on the role of Summoners, using the power of the Iso-Sphere to recruit new Champions from the multiverse to serve the Elders. Each Elder could field a team of five Champions, as well as select Ringers as the game allowed to act as support and keep the game lively. The complex rules met the Grandmaster's approval, while the opportunity to repeatedly collect combatants enticed the Collector. They agreed to Maestro's proposal and moved on to the next stage of the contest.
However, the Collector chose to remind the Grandmaster of his long-forgotten pledge not to interfere with the heroes of their home reality after his last contest of champions. Working with this handicap, Grandmaster had Gallows act as Summoner to draw upon different futures and 
timelines from his own. Among his Champions were versions of the Sentry, the Joe Fixit incarnation of the Hulk, a Venom who killed Spider-Man and an Elektra Natchios who became Bullseye. Whatever the reason, Grandmaster failed to have much success in the battlefield matches, retaining perhaps a tenth of the Iso-Sphere while the Collector secured the rest with victory after victory.
The endgame began when Grandmaster challenged Collector to wager his entire supply of Iso-8 against him in one final round, putting all the Champions and even the Summoners on the battlefield in play at once. This was exactly what Maestro and Punisher 2099 had planned. The Maestro had prepared a device to copy the residual teleport energy on Gallows and teleport back 
to Grandmaster's base. With the power of a future Hulk and the scavenged armor and weapons of past Champions, Maestro managed to beat the Elder of the Universe and steal his fragment of Iso-8. Through willpower alone, Maestro then pitted his portion of the Isosphere against the Collector and managed to assemble the entire Isosphere in his hands merely by wanting it more. The Maestro exiled both Elders from Battleworld, maintaining all the power of the Power Primordial for himself. [Contest of Champions (2nd series) #1-6]
A defeated Grandmaster returned to his other pursuits. Given the opportunity, however, he directed the Earth-based team known as the Ultimates to Battleworld, hoping they would cause some trouble for Maestro. The Champions eventually rose up against the Maestro and Outlaw wielded the Isosphere to end the Contest. One of the effects he made before giving up the power was casting Maestro into the Collector's menagerie, allowing Grandmaster and his brother to enjoy the future Hulk's comeuppance.
