BIOGRAPHY - page 13
Returning to his efforts to die (which had been put on hold as if the continuity of multiple spinoff series had to be shoved into his personal history somewhere), Deadpool tried to come up with a way to kill himself that would overcome even his healing factor. His brilliant plan: antagonize the Hulk. He acquired a pair of nuclear bombs from Russian separatists and attacked Bruce Banner out in the American southwest. Deadpool's plan to antagonize Banner into blindly attacking him as the Hulk worked, but he failed to control the battleground. Hulk punches were strong enough to toss Deadpool into a populated area, leading a rampaging Hulk to charge Wade outside a daycare center. Deadpool showed enough heroism to get the children to safety until the Hulk calmed down. Banner recognized how insane and suicidal Wilson was and beat him into submission. Deadpool was in the hospital for weeks while recovering, and was tried in absentia for various crimes including terrorism and mayhem. [Deadpool (3rd series) #37-39]
Partly through the influence of Captain America, Hulk and Deadpool's attorney She-Hulk, he was not sentenced to the Raft prison but rather to Crossmore Prison in London for extensive psychiatric treatment under the care of Dr. Ella Whitby. Unfortunately, Dr. Whitby was not well herself. She had cultivated a long-distance and one-sided obsessive relationship with Deadpool over the years. Her psychiatric practice was built on the idea of one day treating Deadpool, and she had even begun killing people in a macabre mimicry of Wade Wilson.
Deadpool escaped Crossmore thanks in part to Whitby, but even he thought she was too crazy for him. This was particularly driven home for him when he visited her apartment and found a collection of body parts in her fridge. HIS body parts, abandoned on various jobs or battlefields when his regenerative powers simply grew new parts for him. Wade was disgusted and tossed the parts in the garbage. He planned to leave England, but reluctantly recognized that, if Ella was killing in his name, she was his responsibility. He stopped her from murdering the warden of Crossmore before he and Whitby were caught in an explosion. Ella was badly burnt and wounded by the event, but she survived long enough to kill herself in front of Wade as a bizarre testament of her devotion. [Deadpool (3rd series) #40-44]
Wade was deeply unsettled by the events, trying to reconcile his disgust at Whitby for glorifying him with murder, along with his jealousy over her ability to kill herself so easily. Unfortunately for Deadpool, his internal conflict was about to become external. The scattered body parts from Whitby's fridge retained their healing qualities, even years after the original dismemberment(s). After Deadpool thawed them out and mixed them together in the garbage, they eventually regenerated into another whole Wade Wilson, completely devoid of conscience. Like Ash's double from the Evil Dead, he became... Evil Deadpool!
Evil Deadpool wanted to challenge Deadpool's vision of himself as a wacky mercenary and hero. According to Evil Deadpool, all anybody saw when they looked at Wade was an insane murderer and terrorist. In order to prove this, Evil Deadpool kidnapped and planned to murder the children of a New York police commissioner. Signs pointed to Deadpool as the culprit, drawing out Captain America and Interpol among other agencies to target him. Deadpool managed to get the children to safety and tricked Evil Deadpool into confessing in front of Cap and the law enforcement agencies. As they were being taken into custody, however, Evil Deadpool was shot by a sniper with a serum dart that seemingly removed his healing factor. The first shot provoked law enforcement into opening fire, and Deadpool watched as Evil Deadpool suffered fatal injuries, dying the very death he had wished for himself. Wade used Evil Deadpool's teleporter to escape capture, but was left wondering who shot at him and how the serum erased his healing factor. [Deadpool (3rd series) #45-49]
Meanwhile, Wade remained a part of Wolverine's X-Force kill squad. Their actions continued to have consequences, leading to threats on a planetary or even omniversal scale. And yet the incredible danger and dire stakes only served as a reminder to Deadpool of how immortal he was. While battling the Sinister Iceman of the Age of Apocalypse, Deadpool was frozen solid and shattered into pieces. He survived like Evil Deadpool by just throwing his meaty bits in a bag and waiting for them to regenerate back together. One positive from his time with X-Force was the guilt over murdering young Apocalypse was mitigated by Fantomex. He had used blood from the boy he killed to clone a new version of Apocalypse, raising him to be an upstanding kid named Genesis thanks to the time-warping technology of the World. [Uncanny X-Force (1st series) #10-18] In conflict with the Captain Britain Corps and the armies of the Goat in siege of Avalon, Wade was decapitated again. It proved to be a minor inconvenience and, this time, didn't even stop Wade from talking. Death seemed further away from him than ever. [Uncanny X-Force (1st series) #19-23]
In order to die, Deadpool needed to track down the serum used on Evil Deadpool. To make that happen, he stirred up a hornet's nest by informing Daken, Kingpin and X-Force of the serum's existence, getting other people to race him to the cure and maybe find it for him in the process. He roped Bob into helping him, but Bob was becoming increasingly irate at having to suffer Deadpool's "friendship." After identifying Tombstone as his attacker who wanted revenge for their previous run-in, Deadpool sent Bob to Tombstone to pretend to betray him in order to draw out the serum. Bob actually DID betray him, though, making a deal with Tombstone to use a syringe of the serum to make Wade vulnerable so Tombstone could kill him.
Deadpool was initially thrilled with this, since he had expected Bob to betray him all along. According to Deadpool's twisted mind, trying to kill him made Bob a good friend, since Wade actually wanted to die anyway. Bob was caught in the middle, though, since he didn't actually want to KILL Deadpool, despite how awful he was to him -- he only thought being mortal would shock Wade back to his senses and help him realize he didn't want to die. Worse, Bob's deal with Tombstone meant Tombstone would get to kill Deadpool, but Wade didn't plan on letting him, which meant Bob would be in debt to Tombstone. Bob ended up screaming at Deadpool about how he had never considered his death would have consequences for people other than him. Wade finally came to realize he hadn't thought his plan through to the end. He couldn't die without making sure Bob was safe first, and got him out of New York. Deadpool also had the realization that Mistress Death (whom he had been seeing again recently) only came to him because his healing factor made him "hard to get"... a mortal death wouldn't actually draw her attention. Uncertain what to do next, Deadpool decided to stay alive for the time being. [Deadpool (3rd series) #50-54]
Although he lacked his healing factor, Deadpool's cancer and scarring were gone too. This allowed him to infiltrate the White Sky facility for X-Force using his own unmasked face. His mission was compromised by the new Brotherhood of Evil Mutants who unleashed a trio of mentally programmed assassins called the Omega Clan, wrongly believing Wade and X-Force had killed their parents. The conflict with the Brotherhood led X-Force to teleport into the future as an escape, finding a world run by their older selves 30 years from now. A brutal totalitarian regime that punished people in advance by predicting and preventing crimes, these X-Force members insisted their younger selves stay the course and not abandon their murderous ways. [Uncanny X-Force (1st series) #25-29]
Evan Sabahnur, the young Apocalypse clone named Genesis, had been kidnapped by the Brotherhood in the present in order to force him to unleash his inner demagogue. As X-Force returned to the present and began to debate whether they'd have to kill the boy again to prevent the Apocalypse, Deadpool split off from his teammates. Wade was unwilling to stand by while another kid was killed, and took it upon himself to rescue Evan from the Brotherhood. He was captured but, despite intense torture and mistreatment, he insisted Evan not give in to murder or revenge, but remain a good kid. X-Force defeated the Brotherhood and saved Evan, but at great personal cost. [Uncanny X-Force (1st series) #30-34]
Afterwards, Deadpool maintained his relationship with Evan. Genesis was very thankful for Wade coming after him and keeping him from falling into evil. He declared Deadpool his personal hero, something Wade had been wanting to hear from someone for so long. Wade gave Evan the means to contact him, and promised to stay in touch from then on. However, X-Force could no longer remain together. The team's personal losses and the moral stain of managing a kill squad, even for "noble reasons," became too much to maintain. Wolverine disbanded X-Force and Deadpool parted with his former teammates on good terms. [Uncanny X-Force (1st series) #35]
In spite of the band breaking up, Wade was in high spirits. His restored face and health put him on top of the world, and he decided to make a big splash in the mercenary world to declare himself back in business. When he attempted a hit on the Intelligencia, though, Wade found himself getting schooled by the Trapster. He was beaten by Paste. Pot. Pete. Deadpool realized his merc skills had atrophied since he relied upon his healing factor for so long to carry him through without any lasting injury. He turned to Taskmaster for support, but his good buddy took him out on a mission where he was likely to die without a healing factor, then sold the secret that Wade lost his powers to the Black Box. [Deadpool (3rd series) #55-57]
The information got loose after that, with Deadpool being forced to fight against a slew of former foes like Black Box, Black Swan, Black Tom Cassidy, Hit-Monkey, T-Ray and Slayback. Wade miraculously survived these various encounters, but it was the last opponent that really brought him down. Evil Deadpool had returned. It appeared the serum that cancelled his healing factor was only temporary. Once the effects wore off, it didn't matter that Evil Deadpool had suffered mortal wounds and died... his dead body regenerated and brought him back to life. Deadpool realized he had lost his chance at death again and, sure enough, soon his scars and healing factor had returned. [Deadpool (3rd series) #58-63]
The voice of Madcap in Deadpool's head became stronger over time. Sometimes, it seemed Madcap actually took over Wade's body entirely, engaging in adventures and mischief in his personal costume without Deadpool even knowing about it. Madcap joined the Masters of Evil in Bagalia at the invitation of Max Fury [Secret Avengers (1st series) #29-32] and also became part of the Unkillables who tormented Wolverine for a man named Windsor. [Wolverine: The Best There Is #1-12, Wolverine (2nd series) #304] He was also recruited by followers of the Archangel Zadkiel to attack the Ghost Riders, Hellstorm and Jaine Cutter. [Ghost Riders: Heaven's on Fire #1-6]
This finally culminated in Deadpool, ironically, being back on the same rooftop preparing to assassinate Matt Murdock again. He was interrupted this time by Luke Cage, who struck him in the head hard enough to dislodge Madcap's personality. Deadpool was aware Madcap was a separate entity this time, as Madcap took control of Deadpool's body and infected Cage and the passing Thor with his madness power. Deciding he had had enough of sharing, Deadpool and Madcap manipulated the disoriented Cage and Thor into playing tug-of-war with his body. Deadpool was ripped in two, allowing both sides of his body to regenerate into separate bodies for Deadpool and Madcap. After spending so much time in each others' heads, Wade and Madcap said some awkward good-byes. When Daredevil finally noticed his would-be assassin and came out to beat him up, however, Deadpool noticed something was off. Without Madcap, he wasn't feeling nearly as jokey and wisecracky as he had recently. Something was missing inside him now. [Deadpool (4th series) Annual #1]
Deadpool's deathwish was finally resolved when Blackheart, son of Mephisto, manipulated Eternity into removing the physical aspect of Death from within himself, banishing death from the universe. Deadpool, who cherished his "near-death" experiences in the literal sense, was surprised to find Mistress Death was not waiting for him the next time he was severely beaten. Seeing she was somehow trapped, Deadpool believed Thanos was responsible and decided to confront him. It went horribly. Thanos removed the "spell of darkest necromancy" he once cast on Wade that gave him immortality, just so he could beat Deadpool to death himself. Death was still gone from the universe, but Thanos was shocked to discover she was willing to reach out to Wade Wilson in his moments of near-death to pass messages or warnings about her fate.
Reluctantly, Thanos recognized Deadpool would be useful in freeing Mistress Death from her prison. Also, after learning of Deadpool's origins in Department K, Thanos reflected on how far he'd come despite being rejected at birth, and respected Wade for the parallels in their stories. The unlikely duo fought their way through the Guardians of the Galaxy, a death cult and Ajax, resurrected from Hell as the Abyss Man by their hidden foe. Taking that last opponent as a cue, Deadpool and Thanos infiltrated the afterlife thanks to the houngan Black Talon to find Mephisto dealing with a War in Hell. Blackheart revealed his part in the scheme and struck against his father, but Deadpool received a flash of insight from Mistress Death and traced her outside of Eternity to her prison.
With the aid of Mephisto and Black Talon, Deadpool and Thanos reached Mistress Death and freed her from her cage. She empowered the two of them as avatars to mete out vengeance against Eternity. Deadpool had fun with his cosmic power at first but, after Eternity got a stern whuppin', Wade was ready to call it a day. Thanos would not be denied, however, and continued to fight so that he might kill the embodiment of everything that is. When his own cosmic power vanished, Deadpool reluctantly recognized that this was what Mistress Death wanted. Deadpool refused to let the universe be destroyed, but was helplessly cast into Eternity's folds by Thanos. Inside the universe once more, he was empowered by the Uni-Power to defend creation and returned to the fight as Captain Universe (or "Pool Captain," as he preferred). Wade won both a physical and philosophical victory against Thanos, as he pointed out Thanos respected perseverance and survival in the face of adversity, in many ways a defiance of death in itself. Death withdrew her support from Thanos, causing him to lose the battle, and the struggle was over. No longer cursed with immortality or in love with Death, Deadpool returned to his life as an assassin and mercenary, the most unlikely champion of life of all. [Deadpool vs. Thanos #1-4]
