ALTERNATE VERSIONS
In Earth X, the Enigma Force was given a different origin as a loop onto itself. Reed Richards finally stopped Galactus by turning the entity into a star (though his son Franklin had to become the new Galactus to retain balance in the cosmos). Thousands of years later, Prince Wayfinder discovered a Sword in the Star, and so the evolved power of Galactus became the Enigma Force. As before, it traveled back in time to become tied to Wayfinder’s descendant Arcturus Rann, until the day Subatomica fell to the psychic assault of the Psycho-Man. When Rann died in possession of the Enigma Force, it “died” with him, traveling into the Realm of the Dead. A portion of the Enigma Force bonded with Mar-Vell of the Kree, joining with his collection of forces such as the Power Cosmic and cosmic awareness until he created a Paradise to replace the Realm of the Dead out of his own body, a Mar-Vell Universe. However, the other portion of the Enigma Force traveled further back in time to empower Galan of Taa, thus creating Galactus in the first place.
In What If…? (2nd series) #31, the Uni-Power stayed with Peter Parker after the Acts of Vengeance. His sense of responsibility was so great that he appeared to be the perfect host for its mission. However, the combination of the Uni-Power’s pull and his cosmically-enhanced spider-sense kept Spider-Man responding to dangers around the globe, from natural disasters to environmental hazards to ending a war in the Persian Gulf. “Absolute responsibility” drove him away from Mary Jane and nearly killed Aunt May when he instinctively transformed into Captain Universe in front of her to respond to a threat.
While trying to force Thor into improving the weather in the Sudan, Spider-Man was confronted by Doctor Doom. The Latverian had kidnapped Captain Ray Coffin as a hostage to force Captain Universe to submit to his absorbascann and give up his powers. Instead, Captain Universe struck out at Doom without concern for Coffin’s death which followed. This led to a psychic break between Spider-Man and the Uni-Power, for Peter Parker would never accept the sacrifice of individual lives to protect a “greater good.” He used the absorbascann to expunge the Uni-Power from his body and share a fraction of its power and wisdom with every human on the planet.
On Earth-13, Peter Parker retained the power of Captain Universe and became a major player during Spider-Verse, when the Inheritors hunted spider-totems throughout the multiverse. The Uni-Power could not function on other Earths, but Captain Universe’s Earth became a safe haven and staging ground for the Spider-Men to congregate and plan against Morlun and his lecherous family. However, he eventually fell before the power of Morlun’s father, Solus.
In What If..? (2nd series) #25, the initial plans to stop Set the Elder God during Atlantis Attacks failed, and his Serpent Men spread throughout the globe as Set entered the Earthly plane once more. Quasar, the Protector of the Universe, was lost in Set’s own dimension at the start of the war, but he somehow merged his Quantum Bands with the Uni-Power to become an incredibly powerful version of Captain Universe.
