BIOGRAPHY
Pearl Gross, professionally known as Pink Pearl, is apparently Canadian-born, and definitely very large. Reportedly human, the details of what led Pearl to become so obese remain a secret. Throughout her life, Pearl developed a keen sense of business and became trusted to carry out acts of terrorism with the ability to leave no trace of her involvement. Pearl also had the strange tendency to refer to herself in the third person.
At some point, Pearl was operating in Europe, where she was hired by Clementine D'Arbanville, a circus owner who was looking for a new attraction. Interestingly, while Pearl came highly recommended by her previous employer, it seemed that the employer was eager to get rid of her. Pearl joined Clementine's circus and, around the same time, Clementine's regular performers all began having “accidents.” Coincidentally, Pearl knew other performers who could conveniently replace them. Eventually, the circus arrived in Quebec, Canada and strange circumstances led to the circus being unable to continue on.
No doubt Pearl had a hand in these circumstances, because she had been secretly contacted by a mysterious benefactor who had a very specific job for her: use a bomb to kill both the Canadian Prime Minister and President of the United States, who were going to be secretly meeting at a farmhouse near the circus. Pearl's plan was proceeding when she was thrown an unexpected problem – Clementine D'Arbanville had finally had enough of her antics, and contacted Jean-Paul Beaubier, known as the Canadian superhero Northstar. The two spent some time in their youth as members of the Sepratiste movement, dedicated to the independence of Quebec. Preferring to confront this sudden problem head on, Pearl interrupted Clementine's meeting with Northstar and his sister, Aurora.
Assisted by her trusted circus performers, Pearl trapped Northstar and Aurora, who was currently in her meek, Jeanne-Marie persona and did not put up much of a fight. Pearl demonstrated her ability to use her immense size to her advantage by smothering Jeanne-Marie within her fat rolls. With only five hours until the Canadian Prime Minister and the President of the United States were scheduled to meet, Pearl saw no reason to hide her plans any longer and showed her prisoners an example of the devastating bomb, which she would use to kill her quarry. Pearl had learned that the Prime Minister and the President were due to finalize an anti-missile laser defense system in the Arctic Circle, rendering North America immune to missile attack – and someone didn't want that to happen. Pearl had also acquired information about Celementine and Northstar, including their connection to Sepratiste and, by that connection, would frame them for the assassination of the two leaders.
By now, Aurora had regained dominance from the Jeanne-Marie persona, and took control of the situation, using her powers of flight and the ability to generate light to distract Pearl. Despite her immense size, Pearl was incredibly flexible and with quick reflexes, as she leapt at Aurora and captured her. Pearl's associate, a circus performer called Bones, was about to hurl a knife at Aurora, when Clementime knocked him off balance. The knife landed in Pearl's ample bosom with, her fat apparently not durable enough to prevent her from being knocked out by the knife. With Pearl defeated, the plot to kill the leaders was foiled and Pearl was taken into custody. [Alpha Flight (1st series) #22]
It's unknown how much time Pearl served in prison but, sometime after her release, she was invited to join the all-women group of villains known as the Femizons. The Femizons were formed by Superia, who had gathered some fifty female villains to help her carry out her goal of creating a world ruled by women. As part of this plan, Superia planned to release a biological weapon called Sterility Seeds, which would render the entire world population of women sterile, save for Superia and her Femizons, who would be safe on Femizonia Island and become highly sought after by the rest of the world. Presumably, Pearl agreed to serve as part of the Femizons, because Superia offered the Femizons significant amounts of money for their service. Pearl journeyed to Femizonia Island aboard Superia's ship, during which she joined the other Femizons in battling Captain America and Paladin, who had stowed away on board. Pearl was even among the group of women who almost tore Paladin limb-from-limb. After arriving on Femizonia, Pink Pearl spent some time shopping, but soon discovered that women of her size were not catered for on the island. Superia's plans were foiled and most of the Femizons, including Pearl, went their separate ways. [Captain America (1st series) #389-391]
Pearl returned to Canada and at some point opened a legitimate business in Toronto – an establishment called, appropriately, Cloisters. This establishment was a nightclub that catered to women, with a bevy of hunky men stripping for the entertainment of the female patrons. Cloisters also happened to be the nightclub, where Aurora had booked for Diamond Lil's bachelorette party, apparently unaware that her one-time foe was the owner. Pearl did not put up with any nonsense in her establishment and, when a flirtatious Aurora jumped on stage to dance with the near-naked men, Pearl grabbed her and showed her the scar that had been left in her chest from their first encounter. After taking out Aurora/Jeanne-Marie, Pearl turned her attention on Guardian and Diamond Lil – but was promptly thrown through the window of Cloisters by the super-strong Lil. Pearl maintained a low profile in the years that followed, apparently keeping herself out of trouble with the authorities. At some point, she was invited to join the Shadow Council's new Master of Evil. This incarnation of the team was based out of the island nation of Bagalia, a sovereign nation ruled by criminals. It was here that Pearl, and the dozens of other criminal members of the Masters of Evil, were used as pawns by the Life Model Decoy called Max Fury, who had acquired the Serpent Crown and sought to use its power to spread the influence of entity known as the Abyss. During this debacle, the Masters of Evil battled a team of Secret Avengers, and Pearl encountered Carrion, who appeared to cause her left hand to decay. [Secret Avengers (1st series) #29-32]
Pearl's hand recovered, and she continued to reside on Bataglia, during which she battled another team of Secret Avengers who attempted to rescue the Taskmaster from the criminal nation. [Secret Avengers (2nd series) #2] Despite her membership with the Masters of Evil and time spent on Bagalia, Pearl continued to maintain other pursuits and at some point took up wrestling, possibly superhuman wrestling. It was during this time that she went up against the X-Men's Beast, who was enjoying a night out with his old pal Wonder Man. Apparently, Pearl beat the Beast and won a cash prize of $1,000 for her efforts. [A+X #12]
Returning to Canada, Pearl expanded her operations, eventually rising to the level of crime lord in Toronto, where she now operated more nightclubs and other establishments, some legal, others not. She also began recruiting displaced and angry young people, arming them with weapons from the United States and sending them to cause chaos in establishments belonging to her competitors. The displaced youth that Pearl gathered were collectively known as the Happy Clams, and Pearl had measures in place to prevent any authorities tracing their operations back to her. However, former Alpha Flight member Windshear, now known as Chinook, had been keeping tabs on Pearl's operations and, with the help of Laura Kinney, apparently shut down Pearl's operation. [Death of Wolverine: The Logan Legacy #2]
Pearl never seems to stay locked up for long, so it will likely be only a matter of time before the pleasantly plump crime lord makes her return.
