X-Force business became more unpleasant as Beast started investigating their own people. Reports came in that Mikhail Rasputin was back and leading the mutants of Russia as a counterforce to Krakoa. Beast wanted to interrogate Russian mutants, such as Omega Red and Mikhail’s brother Colossus, for signs of disloyalty but Logan refused to let him run Piotr’s interview. He called in a favor and asked Jean to telepathically probe the subjects instead. Peter was cleared of any knowledge of Mikhail’s plans and freed from Beast’s custody. [X-Force (6th series) #12,15]
Omega Red was more complicated. Arkady was under Dracula’s mesmeric compulsion to aid the Vampire Nation against Krakoa. Furthermore, they finally installed the Carbonadium Synthesizer in Red’s body to control his need for lifeforce, but it also contained a detonator. Beast wanted to turn this sleeper agent into a double agent. He worked with Forge and the Five to craft a new husk for Arkady with a new C-Synth rigged for audio surveillance and a homing beacon. Omega Red would be killed and then brought back with no knowledge of his death, used to spy on Dracula just as Dracula used Omega Red to spy on them. Logan felt he could kill Arkady and sleep soundly that night but manipulating Red’s mind and body against his will rang too close to home. His objections were ignored. [Wolverine (7th series) #4,8, X-Force (6th series) #15]
Wolverine had a blast from the past when he learned the Mercs who recently targeted Krakoa’s drugs were run by David North, Maverick. After a raid on an old Team X storage black site, Mav was captured by his own clients, Legacy House. Using some brainwashing tech from the Team X days, they wiped Maverick’s memories and prepared to sell him on the black market, since mutants and mutant DNA were hot right now thanks to Krakoa. Logan infiltrated Legacy and saw one of his own severed hands up for auction, along with Maverick, missing after a recent resurrection. He used a recitation protocol he and North developed back during Team X to restore Maverick’s memory, and they escaped together. Maverick was grateful for the save but he was committed to the mercenary lifestyle. He couldn’t believe the Wolverine was drinking the Kool-Aid on Krakoa and instead offered to partner up with Logan again as part of the Mercs. Logan refused and they parted on good terms, but it was clear that Logan and North might find themselves on opposite sides of a war very soon. [Wolverine (7th series) #8-10]
The cold war with the Vampire Nation continued as Sage helped Wolverine hunt down vampire dens around the globe and exterminate them. Logan reconnected with Louise, only to find the Nightguard had been compromised and turned by the vampires. Louise was a vampire now, trying to hold on to her humanity through willpower. Wolverine brought her to Krakoa, where Forge outfitted her with bio-tech to help regulate her condition. Surprisingly, Omega Red came forward on his own to seek X-Force’s help against Dracula. Beast and Arkady came up with a plan to poison Dracula’s well. At the Hatchery, the Five produced a genetically-altered husk of Logan with bio-luminescent cells based on plankton enriched in its blood. Omega Red delivered the husk to Dracula for further use in his daywalking formula. Instead, all the vampires who drank from this Logan burned up from within. Again, Hank’s plans did not suit Logan’s moral compass, but he couldn’t deny they got the job done. [Wolverine (7th series) #11-12]
X-Force provided security on the island Mykines for the first Hellfire Gala, which had several hiccups. First, Deadpool tried to crash the formal affair, leading Logan and Domino to forcefully dissuade the murder clown from joining in. Next, Beast had made the nation of Terra Verde into his puppets using their telefluronics, effectively conquering their government and forcing an alliance with Krakoa. His control architecture failed during the gala and nearly caused an international incident with the ambassadors. Emma had to make heavy concessions to Terra Verde after their officials regained their senses in order to avoid a public scandal. Finally, the Marauder and a supply of Shi’ar logic diamonds were abducted from the cove, leading Logan on a search to Madripoor. [Hellfire Gala event]
Wolverine discovered Solem was active on Earth these days and had deliberately manipulated several parties against each other for his advantage. His old pirate captain and abuser, Sevyr Blackmore, and agents of Russia’s mutantdom both tried to seize the Marauder at the same time, letting Solem make off with his prize. He also stole Wolverine’s Muramasa blade from the Summer House to ensure Logan was in the mix as well. Logan did get involved in the double crossing between Solem and Sevyr before discovering Solem had made his own nook on Krakoa. The silver-tongued Solem had arranged for his own Cerebro crèche and back-ups to have resurrection on his own terms. Wolverine managed to retake both the Muramasa blades from Solem and left him to negotiate with Emma Frost over Krakoa’s other losses. [Wolverine (7th series) #14-16]
Even outside of X-Force, Wolverine remained Krakoa’s best tracker and troubleshooter. When A.I.M. kidnapped Nightcrawler, Chamber and Husk from S.W.O.R.D.’s station, the Peak, Logan was rapidly deployed through the gates on a mission to retrieve them. [X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #1-4] He eventually succeeded but he discovered A.I.M. had kidnapped many mutants who had not yet made it to Krakoa, with the help of a teleporter named Maddie. [X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #22-25] He was also called upon when his former student Nature Girl went wild and killed a man in response to the ecological travesties of humankind. Her growing aggression and eco-terrorism forced Wolverine to bring her before the Quiet Council for punishment, and she was condemned to the Pit for violating the Three Laws. [X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #5-12]
X-Force’s missions against Xeno continued when the tattooed man found an ally in Dr. Bloodroot of the Weapon Plus Program. Weapon IV had been a derivation of the Man-Thing, leading to an escaped weapon called Man-Slaughter and “green” gene-tech similar to Krakoa and the telefluronics. Wolverine and X-Force arranged a fluronic conversation between Man-Slaughter and Krakoa to hunt down Bloodroot. They stopped him from infecting more people with fungal control organisms to use as weapons against the mutants. [X-Force (6th series) #21-22] Xeno also sent bio-shop enhanced agents into Krakoa through Dead Mutant’s Cove. A woman named Pike and her team infiltrated Krakoa by posing as surfers, and Logan was misled by the beautiful woman. Her team extracted several mutant babies from the Bower to be used as test subjects by the Man With the Peacock Tattoo. Logan and X-Force recovered all but one of the babies, and Pike died before Wolverine could get more information from her on her creator and employer. [X-Force (6th series) #25-26]
Logan tried to get North on board with Krakoa by recruiting him for an X-Force sabotage and scuttling mission. Maverick proved to be an annoyance for Krakoa, however, when he used his access to the island to steal Krakoan spy-tech. He was selling secrets to both the CIA’s X-Desk and his former captors in Legacy House when Jeff Barrister happened to intercept the bio-tech drive. Barrister’s CIA office was shot up by the Mercs trying to recover the drive, and he reached out to Logan for help. Wolverine learned the extent of Maverick’s involvement in the operation, and he protected Krakoa and Barrister over his old friend. Logan swapped out the biotech drive for a karaoke recording before giving it back to North, leaving him in hot water with his buyers. [Wolverine (7th series) #17-18]
Krakoa was threatened when Mikhail Rasputin revealed to Omega Red that X-Force altered him against his will during resurrection. Mikhail then harnessed Arkady’s rage and transmitted his consciousness throughout time, using the Cerebro Sword. Omega Red’s mind and power emerged from hosts in the past in an attempt to assassinate Charles Xavier or his ancestors to prevent the rise of Krakoa. Sage detected the temporal intrusion, so Xavier and Jean asked Logan for aid. Wolverine’s mind would also connect to the Cerebro network, sending him back in time to inhabit his younger self (or selves) to serve as a trans-temporal bodyguard for the Xavier line.
Logan and Arkady fought throughout time for over a century, from the day of Xavier’s birth, to earlier Xaviers during World War I, the Cold War and other days. Mikhail and Arkady began to lead Logan into traps, like making him manifest during the Weapon X process or hours before Itsu’s death at Jasmine Falls. Eventually, Logan grew spiritually tired enough for Omega Red’s spirit to inhabit him, following the connection back to Krakoa in the present day and threaten Jean and Xavier. His friends called Logan back to himself, and he expelled the malevolent spirit. This connection let Logan track the Russian mutants back to Siberia, where he confronted Omega Red in one-on-one combat. Wolverine killed the vicious mutant serial killer and recovered the Cerebro Sword for Sage and X-Force. [X Lives of Wolverine #1-5]
Logan barely had time to process that Arkady was dead and the timeline was saved before returning to find Krakoa under attack. This time, the attacker was the Omega Wolverine, a Phalanx-infected time-traveler returning from centuries ahead to stop the betrayal of Moira X and the fall of Krakoa. Unfortunately, the Phalanx infection overwhelmed this future Logan and made him a threat as well. While Daken, Laura and Scout kept the Omega Wolverine busy, Logan emerged from the Pointe to overcome both his past and his future in one day. Sage reprogrammed the Cerebro Sword with nanotech to neutralize the Phalanx, and Wolverine ended the threat caused by his other self. [X Deaths of Wolverine #5]
Wolverine’s investigation into the severed hand from Legacy House uncovered that the X-Desk was also conspiring against Krakoa. The CIA intelligence office captured an A.I. child of Danger to force the X-Men’s former ally to run tactical scenarios for them, in the event of enemy action by Krakoa against the U.S. Deadpool got involved to prove himself and, together, he and Logan recovered the child and returned it to Danger. Logan was forced to admit Wade was an asset and proposed him for X-Force membership. [Wolverine (7th series) #20-23]
Other membership changes were even less pleasant than Wade. Sage felt guilt over Beast’s exploitation of Omega Red. She convinced the Quiet Council to allow his resurrection and stabilize the C-Synth in his system, so he no longer needed to feed. She recruited Arkady to work with X-Force willingly, something Logan could barely stomach. Next, Cerebro was corrupted after the encounter with Mikhail and Arkady, evolving one cradle into Cerebrax, an AI hungry for mutant minds and powers. Kid Omega died defeating Cerebrax, and he vanished from Krakoa and the Cerebro back-ups, seemingly leaving him dead for good. Wolverine was sick of the changes he saw in X-Force and was on the verge of stepping down. [X-Force (6th series) #27-30]
Wolverine’s discomfort with X-Force was put on hold during the Eternal War and the rise of the Celestial Progenitor judging all of humanity. In a first strike attack, Wolverine prevented the assassin Jack of Knives from murdering Hope and ending resurrection. During the Celestial’s judgment, Wolverine attempted to confront the Progenitor directly but faced the return of Solem. It seemed the Hellbride of the Hand wanted their heads after they stole the Muramasa blades. Wolverine and Solem teamed up to approach the Celestial and defend each other against the Hand’s attacks. When the Hellbride nearly died of exposure chasing them in the Arctic, though, Logan showed her mercy. She returned to the Beast’s Hell with Solem, and the Progenitor declared Logan had passed judgment. Back on Krakoa, Logan faced Kraven the Hunter trying to prove himself against the apex predators of mutantkind. He abducted Beast into the Pointe’s Shadow Room and Logan was forced to rescue X-Force’s director. [A.X.E.: Judgment Day event]
After Laura’s sister Gabby had a near-death experience (or rather, an actual death experience reversed by the Five), she wanted to spend more time with her family. She proposed a road trip to Laura, Akihiro and Logan as a bonding experience, where they could make memories with one another that didn’t involve fighting and violence. Logan was the first to relent to Gabby’s idea and the Snikt Family Vacation plan was a go! Being trapped in an RV with a bunch of rowdy children with claws may not have been Logan’s idea of a good time, but even the most irritating time with family would always be something that he cherished.
