While the main Enigma Force remained linked to the Microverse and the Spacewall, the Uni-Power was active in the Macroverse as an energy-based symbiote, which sought out individuals in times of crisis. Random people suddenly transformed into Captain Universe, receiving intuitive knowledge of the Uni-Power and the Enigma Force, their purpose and their abilities. In addition to the traditional cosmic power bestowed by the Uni-Power, any Captain Universe would also have their own natural attributes enhanced. Twins with a unique connection would gain a telepathic bond as Captain Universe, a cat burglar’s agility and acrobatic prowess increased beyond a normal Captain Universe, etc.
When the spawn of Knull known as Mister E intended to blot out the sun with negative energy to create a new Shadowverse, the Uni-Power returned to Cape Canaveral. Ray Coffin suffered a heart attack when the energy of Captain Universe attempted to return to him, and so the Uni-Power instead transferred to the teenaged Steve Coffin. Mister E used symbiotic shadow power to possess people at Cape Canaveral and modify their solar shuttle for his needs. As Captain Universe, Steve brought the light of the Uni-Power to fore against Mister E, dispersing the shadowy villain and foiling his scheme. As a final boon, the Uni-Power healed Ray Coffin from his heart attack before departing from him and Steve entirely. [Marvel Spotlight (2nd series) #9]
The Uni-Power next emerged to empower the twins Clare Dodgson and Ann Dodgson Stanford in Phoenix, Arizona. As a private investigator, Clare worked with her brother-in-law Edward Stanford at the district attorney’s office to tackle organized crime. The crime boss Nemesis captured Ann and her children as collateral against Clare. When Clare spotted the trap and leaped into action to save her sister, both women received the Uni-Power and became Captain Universe in tandem. Together, they saved Ann’s children but were distraught to learn Ed had been Nemesis all along. [Marvel Spotlight (2nd series) #10]
The cat burglar Monty Walsh reached too high when he stole from mob boss Guido Carboni. He was shot in the chest by Carboni’s goons while dangling outside his penthouse. The Uni-Power restored Monty to health as the new Captain Universe, and he carried out a campaign of vengeance against Carboni’s operations. When Monty finished dismantling Carboni’s organization, he prepared to kill the mob boss in his own casino and take over the rackets himself. Instead, the Uni-Power left him at that moment, just as the police arrived to investigate the disturbance. They found Guido Carboni holding a gun over the body of a dead cat burglar, for without the Uni-Power, Monty Walsh could no longer survive the bullets in his chest. In death, Monty Walsh did bring down Carboni, giving the police enough probable cause to search Carboni’s office and uncover significant evidence against him. [Marvel Spotlight (2nd series) #11]
When the Hulk stumbled onto an Air Force base, the military provoked a fight with him that nearly kicked off World War III. A paranoid specialist overseeing the underground nuclear missile silos thought the sounds of combat above were signs of enemy atomic bombs falling. He killed his own commanding officer and stole his launch key to fire America’s nuclear missiles in response, ignoring all calls to stop. The Uni-Power arrived and somehow turned Bruce Banner into Captain Universe while also splitting him off from his gargantuan alter-ego. Banner initially believed he had been given the power to rid the world of the Hulk once and for all, until the silos began opening up beneath their feet. Captain Universe tried to redirect his attention to the missiles, but an angry Hulk wouldn’t give up the opportunity to smash Banner. Bruce and the Hulk both leapt atop the lead missile as it followed its trajectory towards Russia. The two halves of Bruce Banner finally began working together and merged, using the Uni-Power to detonate the missiles and apply molecular transmutation that prevented the radioactive fallout from irradiating Russia. More examples of Captain Universe turned up from time to time. A female Captain appeared among the heroes of Earth when the Grandmaster and Death held their Contest of Champions. She wasn’t chosen for either side’s champions, so it’s unclear if the contest was the Uni-Power’s mission, or if its mission was interrupted for the contest. Delayne Masters had an unusual manifestation of the Uni-Power at W.E.B. Dubois High School in Manhattan. A timid and book smart student, Delayne couldn’t stand up to Willie and his bullies like he wanted. When the unruly students started to threaten Ms. Leslie, Delayne suddenly had the Uni-Power and enjoyed the opportunity to torment his tormentors. Willie was wise enough to see the Uni-Power was temporary and threatened Delayne with reprisal after it left. Instead, Delayne marshaled his courage and stood up to Willie without the strength of Captain Universe. His example helped the other students stand up to the bullies’ intimidation, something that would never have happened without the Uni-Power’s initial boost to his confidence. Dr. Evan Swann was a physics professor at Empire State University who sometimes employed graduate student Peter Parker in his research. The aging professor was fascinated when he transformed into Captain Universe to deal with a space-time Quantum Mechanic who manifested at ESU. Apparently, the Mechanic saw the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics in this continuum as an inherent flaw in the make-up of the universe. He intended to destroy the universe and rebuild it with more certain laws of physics to guide interactions at the subatomic level. Dr. Swann’s knowledge of quantum physics allowed him to create a full probability implosion with the powers of Captain Universe, annihilating the Quantum Mechanic and fully restoring ESU’s damaged quad in the aftermath. During the Acts of Vengeance campaign, the Uni-Power experienced a non-typical manifestation. Having foreseen Loki’s creation of the Tri-Sentinel at the conclusion of the Acts, the Uni-Power wanted to create a uniquely powerful hero to oppose it, and chose the amazing Spider-Man. However, at that moment Peter Parker was acting as a graduate assistant working with Dr. Max Lubisch on a previously unclassified form of energy. The “Lubisch energy field” was a promising discovery, but the professor’s arrogance in his own engineering work provoked an overload of the college’s power grid. Peter sensed the danger and thrust Professor Lubisch away from the feedback of his own energy field at the same instant the Uni-Power attempted to bond with him.
The Lubisch energy field interfered with the Uni-Power so that Peter Parker only received the power of Captain Universe, without the costume or inherent knowledge of his purpose. As Spider-Man, Peter quickly realized he had amazing new powers, and incorrectly assumed the Lubisch energy field was the reason. In addition to new powers, such as flight, energy casting and molecular transmutation, Spider-Man’s own powers were enhanced. The average host’s strength was augmented 100x, but Spider-Man was already about 100x stronger than a normal man, making him now able to lift over 1,000 tons, the Strongest Hero in the Marvel Universe. He was virtually invulnerable, could mentally guide and transmute his webbing into different forms, and “Uni-Vision” actually increased all his senses: vision, hearing and “spider-sense.” Peter now had an agonizing hyper-sensitivity to virtually any form of activity in his environment.
Spider-Man’s ability to study and understand his new powers was severely hampered by the Acts of Vengeance campaign itself. The prime movers Kingpin, Wizard, Magneto, Doctor Doom, Red Skull and the Mandarin were brought together by Loki under a simple plot. Villains would agree to swap opponents with each other, ensuring heroes would face unexpected foes with whom they were unfamiliar, increasing their chance of success. Spider-Man’s new powers made him a major target of the cabal, as wave after wave of super-villains attacked him, including Graviton, Trapster, the Brothers Grimm, Titania, Goliath, Dragon Man, T.E.S.S.-One, Terminus, even the incredible Hulk and a direct attack by Magneto.
Far from thrilled with his new circumstances, the self-conscious web-slinger began to fear that too much power was too much responsibility. Peter Parker spent years learning how to restrain his spider-strength to walk among normal people and beat up crooks without serious hurting them. Now, he sported energy blasts and unlimited strength which could be unleashed by a stray thought. The fights instigated against him damaged the Daily Bugle, Madison Square Garden, the Triboro Bridge and other landmarks, as Spidey’s raw power could not be contained while fighting these various foes. He nearly killed Goliath and actually launched the Hulk into orbit with a single punch.
As part of the Acts, Sebastian Shaw did his homework and discovered the connection between Dr. Lubisch’s energy fields and Spider-Man’s power. He blackmailed Lubisch into constructing a mechanism which would dampen his energy field’s effect on Spider-Man. The moment came when the spiteful Loki lost to the Avengers and merged the Tri-Sentinel, sending it to destroy a nuclear power plant. Shaw and Lubisch located Spider-Man wracked with pain from a spider-sense pulse and zapped him, which finally allowed the Uni-Power to manifest completely in the wall-crawler. Peter Parker fully realized his role as Captain Universe and the threat of the Tri-Sentinel. Unleashing the ultimate strength of the Enigma Force, Cap’n Spidey disintegrated the Tri-Sentinel and gave up the excess power he never wanted. [Acts of Vengeance crossover]
